Like a 3D puzzle. I've changed pistons, cylinders and heads on a VW engine but never tried a gearbox. Well done! 🤘

There is a big VW car show this weekend in Sacramento Ca. I will see if I can find. I was told it might take a few transmissions to build one. Thank you! Plus I heard the tools to work on split cases are hard to find.

try using yamabond or honda bond on the cases. it lasts longer. the aviation eventually seems to leak. That is why we switched many years ago. It wont for a little while but after a few years. It is for motorcycle case halves. hondas and Yamahas dont leak unlike harleys.
@wickedwerks
@wickedwerks 5 ай бұрын
Very familiar with Honda-bond; I was a Honda tech for a few years. Do you Honda-bond on the engines as well? For case halves and cylinders?
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 5 ай бұрын
@@wickedwerks case halves yes cylinders no but it would probably work. There is a a permatex product we used to use on cylinders. or just use mega black silicone. gaska cinch on like oil pump gaskets. Basically a contact cement. Or you can use on oil pump spray a gasket. really thin and just holds the gasket in place.

Yamambond is my go to, works every time.

I did exactly what you mentioned about putting the diff in upside down. It was awful 😂. 1 foreward gear and 4 reverse gears. That was alot of work to pull it back out and tear it apart to flip that back over. Ill never make that mistake again

Dude, kinda fun to watch, I have never taken apart a gear box before, (was never that brave). After watching you, I think that maybe I could handle it. I have 2 vintage bugs and both transmissions are good. but nice to see how they work if I ever have a problem. Thanks

Thanks for watching! Keep in mind, these splitcase trans are very different from the later swingaxle transmissions. I haven’t taken one of those apart yet but Rach and I plan to pull hers apart for her car at some point.

Thanks for putting this video together. Besides the Samba article you reference, there is very little else documenting how to rebuild/refurbish these type of transaxles. Mind you most people replace them with a more "modern" swing axle. Other than Mike's observation of missing first gear syncro ring, I'd say it's a success. Thanks for a great video!!
@wickedwerks

Thanks for the reminder! I meant to put a link to that samba thread in the description. I think Mike was joking, the splitcase trans is a non-syncro first gear.

This is called the ring gear. If you can find a replacement, you can replace it. Though I am unsure of the procedure to do so.

Nice work, hopefully you have no leaks, I used that curlt stuff and it didn't seal :( I changed over to permatex.
@wickedwerks

All a process of trying different stuff. I don’t mind pulling it all apart and trying to a different seal, or building another one with a different sealer. Thanks for watching!

Did you find out where that ring goes ? Also didn't see you tighten that first nut up
@wickedwerks
@wickedwerks 5 ай бұрын
Not yet. I’m sure it will reveal itself in the first test drive, assuming it even belongs to the gearbox. What first nut?
@kaptainkirk719
@kaptainkirk719 5 ай бұрын
read the first comment Mike said where it goes as far as the nut it was the first rod you put in that had that adjustment ? not sure whats it called
@wickedwerks
@wickedwerks 5 ай бұрын
@@kaptainkirk719 Mike was making a joke because these early splitcase transmissions do not have a synchro for first gear. The bolt on the reverse gear selector was torqued down; I just didn’t film it.

I have a 58 split case I need to rebuild. I know parts are hard to come by, how do I tell if gears are still good or toast? Thank you!
@wickedwerks
@wickedwerks 3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I don’t know either. I would imagine if the edges of the teeth on the gear; where it meshes with the slider are all chewed up or worn down; it’s probably toast.

I am not sure what gear it is, but the biggest one in the whole case is the one with the gears broken off. Can I just replace that one?
