All the tips and tricks I've worked out over the years of prototyping, messing around and making machinima in creative mode in Space Engineers. From the basic building tools, to symmetry mode to voxel hands, hopefully this tutorial has you covered.
A big thank you to my patrons who error checked the video and gave me some great suggestions on how to improve it before publishing the video. If you want to help out with making these tutorials better: / splitsie
New tutorials will be posted as soon as I feel they are complete but hopefully will be able to get them out about once per week.
If you have any tutorial topics you'd like me to cover in the coming videos please let me know in the comments. If you've got burning questions about how to do something, ask here and I'll do my best to answer.

Oh, wow, I didn't know Ctrl+Delete was a thing, nor did I know about being able to pick where the copy point would be! This is why I watch these tutorials despite being a 5-6 year veteran (don't remember exactly, but I started long before planets were added) of Space Engineers; there's usually something useful to learn that I previously missed!

You know what would be really nice? A spreadsheet or PDF with all those "obscure" key-bindings, so you can look it up while playing, and you would not need to remember all of them, or spend 30 minutes watching a video to find the right one. I searched for that but could not find any such "compilation". I've used that for other games; it works great for me.

Thank you for another great round! So far, I hadn´t yet realized what did that second mirror option mean (the edge of the block). The same goes for the "pick point" for a blueprint - I didn´t know there was such a choice. It´s GREAT, because now I will be able to use it as a root part (just like this same option in Kerbal). By the way, the players might be aware that, while mirror is activated, it will remove the other blocks even if they are not the same on the other side - meaning, if you manually place a different block on each side, with mirror disable, and then click to remove it with the mirror enable. Cheers!

Spectator cam building. You can place blocks while in spectator mode (unless this changed, I haven't done it in a long time. Maybe someone can confirm). This is really useful for building underground, since you can place down your base and then dig it out with the voxel hands. If I recall, it doesn't like to let you place entire lines or planes of blocks along the edge of the voxels, however.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
Spectator cam building still works, though not as simply as it once did, I'm planning on doing a separate 'spectator cam' tutorial because there's so much I could talk about with its use that it'd fill a full 30 minutes on its own (because I spent so much time with spectator cam while making machinima videos before I ever started this channel) :P

Maybe it's just me, but I've started to look at other people's builds in Creative, and can spawn them, np, vivisect them to understand why people put what where and how, then I try to use the projector in Survival, and there are multiple grids, so the workshop builds are at best "unfinished," because unless I just use my awesome Server Master commands and just spawn it in, I would have to, 1) Go to Space (where no one can hear you scream); 2) Take apart each subgrid; 3) Resave as a Blueprint subordinate to the original build, creating a whole new annotation system that works for me so I don't forget the order; 4) Build a ship that can lift any subgrids to a main grid; 5) Learn how to use the mod that does the once used snapping thing or the vanilla block that does that (idr the name of the block); 6) Manually build the subgrids, lift the subgrids, add the snappy blocks, snap them together, and hope I did it in the right order...the SE soundtrack isn't good enough for me to invest that amount of time, atm, but I'm greener to SE than a recruit still with all his hair at a Marine Bootcamp...so I could be missing something. I went to discord SE and they said, pistons, rotors and wheels are subgrids, is that "all?" Then again, Idk how to build a welder wall, or a nanobot building thingie yet, (the nanobot repair/build mod I can't get to work without a critical error, I haven't tried only the nanobot block itself...) that can build blocks 5 blocks deep into a build... How would you overcome this subgrid issue, other than what you said, if I remember correctly, by somehow lining up the subgrid perfectly and weld like you said in your projector tutorial. It IS possible I didn't understand the whole thing... Only other thing with building in creative is I watch other people build arms with metal frames to lengths I'd think are way too long for them to be able to hold the weight on the end, or I see a drill head or two on the end of small grid tubes and I think the torque would just easily rip them off, but they don't. How can I in Creative/Survival mode and ensure I don't figure out what too much is too much, before an explosion and loss of my build/parts?
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 жыл бұрын
I'll start with the easy question, there's no structural integrity in space engineers so you can have any weight suspended on any block and it won't break unless something collides with it. Projectors cannot project sub grids, ever. To get around this you can make blue prints of each part, connect the parts together into one grid in creative mode by sticking the sub grid straight on the main one (direct block connection, not via connectors or pistons or rotors) or just paste the whole thing in while in creative mode. The method of welding the projection has no effect on what you can weld, this limitation is in the projector block itself.
@jeffreyspinner9213
@jeffreyspinner9213 5 жыл бұрын
@@Splitsie, I think I saw in your projector video a ship that had multiple projectors one for each subgrid. It showed when you opened the control menu and I saw multiple projectors listed/icons in a row. I saw it for a second, but you didn't really talk about it...it was more about the pivot of the projector you were talking about at that time. Is that the way around the issue, ONCE in the game to get it to be able to repair either manually or automatically, and if so, isn't all builds on the workshop without projectors per subgrid failing to serve their public and subscribers (!)? With regards to structural integrity, given your episode 23 video, and your small grid utility rover being able to pick up and move that huge hydrogen engine (and Capac's attached rover he was using to line up the failed attempt with merge blocks by himself), the only physics we have to deal with is such like linear and rotation force vectors (rovers flipping) and some magic that determines after a great leap, how much is too much force on a grid or block in that grid to damage it? Lastly, your Build Vision looks different than my Build Vision. I'm using the 2.3.1 version...which I think sometimes fights with the vanilla version of the Easy Inventory implemented in the game. I sometimes do ctrl+ MMB and I start something building...no bueno...still learning though, maybe I'm wrong. [solved, yup different one...downloading now...will test] I'm trying to use a 3 to 6 degree of freedom piston/rotor arm, and I'd like to make it into something I can only have to manipulate the connector to make everything move (think of the youtubers with mics, and they all have that black arm that moves as they move just the mic back to their mouths, or how a dentist, before she starts to torture you moves her overhead light into the right position)...like what happens in IK (inverse kinematics for animations in CGI) but Idk even how to start to try to do that, or how to search/implement scripts in my game...I'm uncertain I'm downloading working scripts or I'm the non-working script failed link in the chain...so this could be a useful tutorial in the future, or I'll review all your tutorials just in case, I missed something...[update: I think someone may have suggested a working script!]

Say you have a corridor running underground that has some space around it. If you were to use voxel hands to fill that outside gap - would it fill the inside as well? On the same note, if one was to paste the underground installation, will it be full of dirt?
@Jfk2Mr
@Jfk2Mr 5 жыл бұрын
Depends if you use voxel hands with engineer or spectator cam - spectator can go through anything, so it can fill that space without protrusions into the tunnel, although this is question more about precision than method. As for pasting underground stuff - yes, if you paste it underground it will be full of whatever voxel is out there
@Splitsie

If you're careful about how you place the dirt you could leave the corridor clear (since you can control the size of the volume of voxel you place. In the case of pasting an underground installation, yes it will be full of voxel material that you'll have to remove through voxel hands or drilling

@Splitsie

It's possible but not recommended. The distance from the earth-like to space means you have to use various workarounds to try to not have the physics system go crazy when you build a grid or collection of grids to span the 40+km you need to in order to exit the gravitational influence of the planet. When I built the ladder from Earth to the moon the central portion had no physics interactions at all and that was one of the less strange issues I ran into :/

There's usually a bit of tutorial in a lot of what I do - just because I like teaching, but I've got 2 solo series, one that was minimally modded Survival, Maybe and one that's modded to make things difficult but most of the builds so far have still been vanilla which is Survival, Impossible :) Or you've got my Co Op stuff with a friend of mine, just have a look at the playlists tab on my channel page and you'll find all the playlists there

@@Splitsie Wouldn't it fun to build some vid/stream-series about traveling from one ond of the smiley to the other (on rover for the most part) then switch to space and build a "nose"-spacestation that's big enough to be seen from that distance? (well atleat if the distance for grids won't be so limited by the game) It would be so much fun to travel all those moons and planets, bein hunted by evil drones and ships all the way and then build that station all under constant attack by several evil factions :D

There's a mod to help with Red/Green colourblindness with relation to the emissive lights on the conveyors but I haven't seen one for the symmetry planes. Fortunately for those the actual colour is largely irrelevant as the orientation can be clearly seen regardless of the colour :)

Ooh neat, I didn't know there's so many tricks you can use in creative :D I usually like to design and test my ships or buildings in creative before I use them in survival, and I've had the problems of not knowing how much power or hydrogen tanks I need. I never thought of using a survival world with creative tools to test that :D
