Splitting 3 Different Trees for BOW MAKING!

How to split trees to dry faster and easier to handle for bow making, constantly cutting and drying bow staves is an important step as wood needs to season for months or up to a couple years in this state to get the moisture content down and dried out. Making a green wood bow is not effective in bow making or survival, force drying wood is another skill coming in a future video!

You grind the edges of a wedge and bevel it inward. Keeps from mushrooming. Only a desperate soul would use black locust for a bow. LOL All wood will split down the pith, you need to remove the very center to avoid this,.

Old Clunker! Thank you for the tip on beveling edges and just makes sense, that piece shot like a bullet into my leg and I pulled it with pliers. A couple of wedges that were given must have 40 years of on/off beating (non professional use). Black locust is a tough wood due to the irregularities but my students did great and made it happen in 2 1/2 - 3, 8 hour days. Hopefully Elm will be the next one on the class docket, seems more forgiving.
