Just got my first cord of Madrone wood can’t wait to do some s’mores. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it 😊

Thanks jorge, madrone is a great cooking wood. I hope you enjoy that too.

We have a heck of a lot of them on our property. The sound of the bark peeling or splitting during the summer is pretty cool. Leaves are slippery as heck though! Watch your step! Thanks for the video. There's a hotel in Washington made of madrone! You gotta ask, what on earth made someone use a spiraling inconsistent squirrely hardwood to build a hotel?

I sure like madrone. I don't have much in my neighborhood. I made a bar top out of madrone once, when it finally dried out, it got pretty crooked.

Now the naked looking trees make sense...Thanks!

It was about time for some ‘splaining on the naked trees.

Looks like a cross from Mesquite from the Sonoran Desert and a eucaliptos tree.
@WilsonForestLands2 жыл бұрын
I know a little of eucalyptus, not so much that kind of Mesquite. I did read somewhere where someone said the smoke flavor from Madrone is comparable to Mesquite.

Best firewood to be had in the north west

Great video. Madrone is wonderful for woodturning but it must be soaked and then boiled for about an hour per inch, otherwise it will immediately crack and twist.
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
Thanks Charlie. Yep that’s why I have avoided getting into milling madrone. I may cut up a log or two soon. I know a guy who wants to use it for small pieces. Just cut them big so he can plane them down and cut around the cracks.

Northwest native and in my entire, nearly 50 years of life, I have NEVER heard anyone pronounce Madrona without the ah sound at the end, nore spell it with an E instead of an a at the end LOL. It might just be a Puget Sound thing though. It makes great firewood that burns forever but if you cook over it it will make your burgers taste like raw dandelion stems lol.

Very interesting I've never seen it before looks like great stuff

It’s only in some areas of the west coast. out here it’s the gold standard for firewood.

I love my madrone firewood mixed in with the Doug-fir or the piss fir. Unfortunately, the white/piss fir have been suffering from the drought and then the beetles get them, so I have had to take quite a few down the past two years or so. I have a very long stick approximately 8 feet by 2ft of madrone that I have been waffling about. It is rare to find it that long and straight, and it seems a shame not to try to chain saw mill it into boards. I look forward to learning from you when you mill some.

Thanks Edwin. I haven’t been burning much Madrone myself because I have such an abundance of dead and dying fir.

Madrone burning in the stove now, best firewood I’ve burned yet.

It doesn’t get any better than madrone that I know of. I have Douglas fir in mine right now but when the weather gets colder I’ll be burning more madrone.

“Ar byu tus” is the correct pronunciation; the genus of the tree is arbutus, its full scientific name is arbutus Menzesii. It is locally called madrone in CA and OR, madrona in WA, arbutus in Canada. Interestingly, both Canada and California use “madrona” as a place name, not madrone. It does indeed make excellent firewood as well as turned products which is my area of expertise. Lumber, as was said, is difficult to dry and keep from cracking and warping. Good video except for the pronunciation and including the other common name, madrona.

Always curious if the Madrone made good lumber. For such a beautiful tree it sure seems looked at almost like a weed, it's sad.
@WilsonForestLands2 жыл бұрын
It makes beautiful lumber. It is a process to get it to dry straight, most people just don’t want to mess with it. You are right about it being looked at like a weed. It is unfortunate.

How is the aroma of that species ??
@WilsonForestLands2 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have much of an aroma. When it is green I think it smells a little bit like carrots. When dry it doesn’t have much of an aroma. If you put your nose on a fresh piece and sniff there’s a little light aroma. Just a very mild aroma that doesn’t really remind remind me of anything.

Very interesting , not long ago I was going to ask you about that tree , and yes I seen it in one of your videos , I would be interested in seeing what kind of slab turn out. If it’s that tough can’t you turn it into boards ? Might be as tough as white oak. Thanks for sharing and the education on the tree. Take care
@WilsonForestLands2 жыл бұрын
When it’s green it cuts very easy. When it dries it gets very hard. It would be easy to cut into boards. Keeping the boards straight as they dry is the problem. I will try some out on the mill one of these days.

Madrone wood is highly sought after by wood workers it's so beautiful and the colors are so vivid it's such a shame to see it thrown to the fire smh I can't even find any of it but it is hard to cure for woodworking I hear like years to dry correctly doit doesn't split
@WilsonForestLands11 ай бұрын
Not only is it hard to cure, in a lot of its range it can be hard to find madrone trees large and straight enough to efficiently make lumber out of. Those type are around, but around here we have a lot of small twisted crooked Madrone trees. Not the kind of thing most sawmills want to deal with. But you are right it makes beautiful lumber.
