Also something to note there's a slit along the tailboom that allows high volume low pressure air to escape, turning the tailboom into a wing using the Coanda effect. That is what creates the antitorque, not the directional thruster. The vertical stabilizers take over as speed increase reduces the coanda effect.

For those of you who love physics, The NOTAR system is more than just a fan blowing out air. It uses something called the Coanda effect as well as direct thrust. These are cool effects to look up such as the Coanda effect and Magnus effect that make a spinning ball curve or air flowing over a curved surface. NOT Bernoulis BTW. Cool stuff. Side question: I suppose the NOTAR system does not have the same zones of LTE (loss of tail rotor effectiveness) due to lack of vortices etc.

to simplify it uses fancy tricks to make the boom act like a wing that counters the toque. the nozzle at the end is mostly for left and right the boom its self handles most of the counter toque and the verticals handle it at higher speeds.

Hi Cleetus, thanks for the terrific video!! Looks like a total blast!! I remember watching Magnum PI as a kid. Magnums pilot buddy TC flew an MD5xx. I've loved it ever since. Kinda ironic, but, my first real job was building visual DBs for simulators. The company mainly built computer visual systems (a bit before GPU graphics 😂). On my first day I was introduced to my "review station" which was a 3 x 3 array of monitors with an office chair bolted to the floor in front. There was a real cyclic, collective, and footpedals arranged around the chair. I basically had to learn to fly rotary wing to review my work. I crashed allot but after a few days of persistence I finally figured it out. Like riding a bike... you never forget. The main flight SW I used was for the MH6 Littlebird. So incredibly gratifying and fun! I'm eventually gonna learn how to really fly. As soon as I'm able to afford my own, the MD530F (or similar) will be my first choice.

I love this type of content, but that’s coming from someone with a passion for aviation. So cool learning and even seeing you guys learn , explore and experiment with aviation!

520n is a very unique machine. I grew up close to the factory watched them get developed. The first seven were delivered to phoenix police. I rode in one for a night shift in the air unit.

Paul is awesome! That helicopter with the side seats and fast-rope rig is basically the civilian, pointed-nose version of an MH-6 (the troop transport version) Little Bird. So awesome!

That was fun! I only got near a helicopter about 20 years ago when I worked at the children's ICU and we flew out to get sick newborns in the smaller hospitals in the area. But I still found it very interesting, because the video was put together in an interesting way 👍!

I know nothing about planes or copters but I really like these aviation videos. Very interesting stuff and a great add to the channel.

They’re great little choppers, my family runs a fleet of about 115 Hughes 500’s with a mixture of civilian and military versions all operating off tuna boats in the western Pacific area. They work hard in incredibly hostile conditions.

The tail boom also has slots along its length that aids in the Coanda effect known as Coanda slots. These helis have a very distinct sound with the whine from the fan and the sound of the air being blown through the boom.

This video is sweet! I just finished watching (again) the video of when you first announced buying the freedom factory. It’d be cool to see a cinematic video of your progress and accomplishments and best moments from then to now.

It's kinda crazy, I grew up obsessed with helicopters, became a combat photographer in the marine corps and was in a helicopter incident that left me disabled, was also a huge Kobe Bryant fan, so had definitely developed an aversion and hatred for them, and watching these Cleetus videos has renewed my love for them

When I worked with an exploration company in Southeast Alaska we had Hughes 500C & D models flying us around. They're like the sports cars of the skies, just freakin' loved thise birds.

The air coming out the port at the end of the boom is only part of the NOTAR story. Air from the fan also comes out along the boom, which generates a horizontal force on the boom via the Coanda effect on the air from the main rotor as it washes down over the boom.

The NOTAR is my favorite helicopter and I watched a guy that owns one and he showed that the NOTAR would do anything that any other helicopter will do but smoother and much quieter. Plus it just sound so much cooler.

Paul appears as though he'd be the coolest granddad/father of all time. Responded to all inquiries George posed pleasantly. Appears to be an amazing person to be aware. Cleet generally tracks down the great ones

This is just more proof that being positive in life leads you directly to other people living a positive life. It's a law of the universe but is so overlooked in our world. Things like this don't just happen guys it cokes from treating people well and living right. Awesome to see and a great example for people to aspire to.
