Þ (Thorn) looks like Y in Old English/Gothic/Old Norse alphabets, when printing was invented it didin't have the letter because it was from mainland Europe so the English use Y instead of Þ to represent Th, but Y is already pronounced as Y so most words were pronounced incorrectly i.e Ye as Yi instead of The.

Spelling was phonetic for the beginning of the Middle Ages. By the time of the Renaissance, the English language kept the Late Middle Age orthography (which was phonetic at the time), making the pronunciation inconsistent with the spelling as it is nowadays. Therefore he is right. Also, Ye, in Middle English is equivalent to our "you all".
