I never expected outer wilds to scare me. In the base game i definitely hada couple obscure moments where my heart sunk. But goddamn, even immediately into the DLC, when the stranger first appeared i almost fucking died.

Base game is far scarier. There wasn't a single moment in DLC that scared me, apart from entering the Stranger the first time with that immense scary music. That was awesome and quite terrifying. But from the inside, the Stranger is a lovely area with beautiful villages and from the very first reels you find, there's nothing to suggest the beings of this place are bad. They also look kinda cute. And even when they catch you, they just snuff your flame out (well not always true but still). I think people are just generally scared of dark areas. Because Dark Bramble and Giant's Deep are what really scared me.

This area is made by sadists, after you realize how the upstairs owlks work it's not that hard to get downstairs, but after the tense segment that was getting downstairs, I thought I was in the clear, I was walking with little regard of where I was shining my light until the distortion in the music starts to play and I see an owlk shinning its light directly at me while I was in a corner next to some stairs, I was inches away from the light's radius so I didn't get caught, but my God I was just waiting for the owlk to scream

That garbled noise sting that repeatedly played throughout the clip is a sound cue that plays anytime one of the strangers is JUST about close enough to charge you. That’s how I knew that the first guy was right behind you the entire time even though you never fully looked.

@@almogz9486 Technically the solution is to get down the spiral stairs right as the tower tips over. It is stressful to panic-grab all the slides before the ATP sucks you in, but it feels less stressful than brute forcing through the Owlks, lol!

In this area, I never went down the stair, I jumped on one of the underground elevators as it was going back up and then rode it down, from there I accidentally made the owlks go under the bridges and got trough

I completely forgot that I could get away from the lanterns to get the bug, I just lured them in and walked around. For anyone who happens to be playing, if you've blown out the whole house and failed to come back, you can just turn left to get to the elevator.

I got spooked pretty bad in this section, too. I played the dlc with my brother on the multiplayer mod, and during this section, he left me in this room after screaming, "THERES TWO OF THEM?" As he ran down the stairs to the elvator. I never saw two follow him, so after waiting about 2 minutes and only one came out of the elevator room, I called him crazy and went down, turning my light out just in case. When I got down, I could see nothing as I called the elevator and waited, then as it reached the top, that dim light the elevators have barely illuminated one of the owls silently staring straight at me from the corner of that tiny frickin room like 2 feet away from me. Then I ran screaming into the elevator and listened to my brother laughing histarically at me as I recounted the situation he put me in.

I believe the guards only descend from their towers when you turn the lights off. If you got past the alarms by being dead, and so never needed to turn the lights off, then the guards won't be down there.

Spoiler Alert: If you kill yourself at the fire in the real world while holding a lantern, you will still end up in the virtual world. However, since you’re dead, the alarms can’t wake you up. The game kind of already tells you this if you realize that’s why the aliens aren’t awoken by it.

You would only know this by trial and error UNLESS you look it up OR already complete this area as intended, with guards. The reel "reward" for this area contains the knowledge of the death simulation.

@@Cookiekopter You can only access one location with the raft. The forbidden archives all have a trick for bypassing them than you learn once you get in. So the archive that tells you about the raft skip can be accessed with the raft skip, the archive that tells you about the bells is defended by a series of bells, and the archive that tells you about simulation mode can be accessed with a secret bridge you can only see in simulation mode.
