Spoken vs. written Finnish | Learn Finnish by listening!

Terve, Lotta. First, I just want to take minute to thank you for the remarkable public service you do here on KZbin and in your blog! Despite the tons of content about Finnish here on KZbin, your approach and true desire for people to learn real Finnish is unique and valuable. Kiitosia paljon sulle! Regarding the video's issue, and I can only speak from my individual experience of someone that has never been to Finland and has been learning Finnish outside of Finland (in 2 different countries, and had 4 different native Finnish teachers), the written form is still very much prioritized over the spoken language. I can share 2 situations about the use and (not) learning of puhekieli in my Finnish class this last week. The teacher asks what to say if you accidentally drop a glass of water at someone's house, I promptly said "Anteeks" and the teacher was "Correct, but the more polite way is "Anteeksi". We will for now learn only standard Finnish". A bit later on the same class we were reviewing numbers and I just recalled I saw this "secret puhekieli" (as I call it, lol) were puhekieli becomes even more puhekieli, i.e., yks -> yy, kaks -> kaa, and so on. I asked the teacher about it, how and when to use this very short forms and she only replied, "for now we are going to use yksi, kaksi, kolme...", and I could only think "voi ei, shame" cause people were looking weirdly at me. Reminder the teacher is native Finn. Don't get wrong, I still think Finnish teachers are the best teachers I've ever had, but why are they so persistent with written language if they know that will not help us in day-to-day situations, making friends and even finding jobs in Finland? Is like they are setting us up for failure, or maybe they "just" want us to know how to read and have knowledge on academic Finnish and politics. I want to master that stuff too, but if that doesn't help me at first to find a job, to provide for myself in Finland, to have Finnish friends and to speak to them in Finnish, maybe I’ve been learning backwards then. I have watched this video like 3 times, and I'm still in shock. Thank you for opening my mind on this! Finally, as you are a highly educated person Lotta, I would like to ask if puhekieli is used in the following situations. In high school and university, at classes teachers and students speak puhekieli? University Professors/ researchers speak puhekieli in their job (since is a more scientific job compered to work in a company)? When you speak to elders (grandparents, but not only) do you speak puhekieli to them? And to your Boss? Do use puhekieli when you go to the bank? Anteeks for such a long comment, but this is all very intriguing to me. I noticed you have a course to learn spoken Finnish, unfortunately as of now, for financial reasons I can’t enrol, but I hope soon I might! Moi! Thank you so much for sharing, it's very interesting to read. I honestly cannot understand why Finnish teachers would insist on kirjakieli, unless perhaps if it's mandatory in the curriculum and they have to do that. In ALL the example situations you mention we use puhekieli. Of course the tone of the language changes a bit when you speak to different people, but that's the case in every language. Funnily enough, I was one the phone with the tax authority yesterday and I found myself speaking half puhe- and half kirjakieli :'D But that's completely unnecessary, I guess I just wanted to sound like I knew what I was talking about (probably didn't succeed though haha). Here in America they speak finnglish, its a finn that came in over a hundred years ago and has really never been updated to modern finnish. But it is spoken finn.

I think it is better to learn the written form first and then the spoken version. If you talk to somebody and can't understand the spoken Finnish they use then you can ask them to speak in English instead, but if you can't understand written text like signs, advertisements, instructions or product packaging then you do not have to option of switching to English and you must either understand written Finnish or not be able to understand the text.

That's an interesting point, but I would argue that short signs and instructions are easy enough to understand even if you "only" know puhekieli. I think it would be more difficult the other way around. But that's just my opinion ☺🤷‍♀

Näyttää siltä että JY:n kielikeskus teki virheen kun syksyllä 1990 se opittoi vain Suomen kirjakieli. Tuo oli kieltä, että mä opin ensimmäistä ja se teki asioita melko vaikea kun olin kaupungissa tai muun muualla Suomessa ja tarvitsin puhua jokulle jota en tuntenut hyvin. Toivottavasti asioita on nyt paremmin. Paljon kiitoksia.

So I were to learn the spoken form by watching TV for example, is the spoken form used in movies, shows, etc? What about the radio, I assume it's only the news that is in written form?

Moi, in a video you made a couple of years ago you said that it was good to learn some common finish verbs, do you know where I can find the spoken verison of common verbs with their conjugations?

After a quick google search I couldn't find a good list of these in several tenses. You might have to look for them on a case-by-case basis :/ I think I will have to make a comprehensive list myself!

"Kakikissa kielissä on eroja virallisessa ja arkipäivän muodossa."-Se ei oo täysin totta. Esimerkiks, venäjässä (ja luultavasti muissa slaavilaisessa kiellessa niinku ukraina, valkovenäjä jne) ei oo puhe- ja kirjakieltä. On tottakai olemassa kaikenlaisia slangii, mut se ei oo samaa juttuu. Sä voit käyttää samaa kielta kirjallisessa ja puhuessa ihan normaalisesti.

Mielenkiintosta! Tosiaan tarkotin nimenomaan että muissa kielissä on on pieniä eroja, esim. englannin I am vs. I'm. going to vs. gonna, mutta suomessa on tosi erilaiset kirja- ja puhekieli.

Vielä 40 vuotta sitten puhekieltä ei tunnustettu. Se oli vain väärää kieltä. Koulussa sanallakaan ei mainittu puhekieltä.

Olen opiskellut molempia puhekieltä ja kirjakieltä samaan aikaan ja ainankin musta tuntuu, että se on ollut parhain opiskellutapa itselleni. Puhuessani käytän niinku "mikstuuraa" puhe- ja kirjakieltä.

Maybe the later Suomen Mestari classes are now in puhekieli but was taught in kirjakieli for many years, worth a look after finnished-me.

@@tyylinaina Hmm. As a Finn I feel like it's still very important to learn kirjakieli, perhaps even before you start to learn puhekieli. And don't worry, speaking in kirjakieli is not a crime and people will still understand you perfectly, which is the most important thing! You can then learn puhekieli after.

@@Sc0pee Thanks for this, it's just more motivation for the dream. I only recently learned about savonian dialect after ~5000 known words of mixed written/spoken and realized that I'm still at very early stages of mastery. Understanding firstly is the main goal and then to be understood. Kiitos tästä, se on enemään motivaation unellmaalla. äsken oppinut Savonianasta aidinkieli, muistoon noin viidentuhatta sanaat jälkeen ja mä tajannui olen viel alkuvaiheissa mestariassa. Ymmärtääkses on perustavoitte sen jälkeen ole ymmärttämään.

I'm not roasting anything here :D As I said, the Suomen Mestari teaches puhekieli nowadays. I strongly recommend learning puhekieli first, because even if people understand you in kirjakieli, you won't understand them ;)
