Thank you. I have purchased 4 containers this year with a calibrachoa and wasn’t sure re watering/fertilizer needs. This was very helpful as I have not had this plant before and think they are beautiful! I particularly like the fact deadheading is not necessary to keep it blooming. For the record I am in zone 3.

Love these! Discovered them first last spring. Bought 3 for a planter and when we moved to zone 8b in SC last July, I decided to plant them into our part shade garden in the fall- just to extend the life. The green leaves lasted all winter and bloomed this past April and have been doing great since. I didn’t know you could do cuttings so I’m going to try it! Thanks. I picked up three of the orange ones about 4 weeks ago - two in a planter and one in the ground. They are thriving!! 🧡💖 have a great week and thanks for the tips.

I love that blue container. Great topic. These plants caught my eye and I purchased 3. One is struggling. I will back off watering. Another concise and to the point topic. Appreciate you guys

Thanks for pronouncing it right! I had an absolutely ridiculous dispute with my garden center co worker, about how to pronounce “CALIBROCHOA”, she insisted it was “CALABROCHA”, but I’m the one with the Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture Science and I know my plants botanical names and the common names. Your video here on KZbin helped settle it, lol. She finally conceded and calls it using it’s correct pronunciation. Speaking of Proven Winners; imo, they are the champs of this plant, in particular. Oh, and I have a lot of success with cutting them back three times during the growing season, here in hot and humid northern NJ. Otherwise they get leggy and sparse! One thing to be mindful of is that they tend to get corroded beneath rotting and ultimately, dried out on their undersides. I feel they require more attention than some others, I really also like the more succulent types like purslane and portulaca in containers as they truly last the whole season no maintenance other than sun, good draining soil and water.

I’ve been planting calibrochoa (guilty of pronouncing it wrong) for over a decade now. Our back deck is up high, over a basement patio. We call it our “rooftop garden”. I have the railings lined with those 36” long metal hanging baskets which are lined with coco mats. First year I had to water 2x/day in the high heat (I live near Raleigh, zone 7), so every year since, I use diapers to line the bottoms (peeling back the layer that protects baby from the wetness). This keeps me from having to water again in the evenings. I use mostly calibrochoas because we love them so much. I leave the baskets hanging all winter, and without any winter-time care or attention, about 60% of my plants will come back (I’d have better success, I’m sure, if I tried harder). I’ve learned to do a light trim before fall and then again once I see new growth in early spring. They are amazing in all categories! I’ve been looking around KZbin for info about propagating them as I have a favorite (on its 2nd yr) and didn’t see it at the nursery this year.

My Calibrachoas have splotchy leaves. I water the pot whenever the soil is dry and they are still flowering, but not thriving. Any ideas what may be wrong with my plants?

What type of fertilizer numbers on these - it is July in NY and no flowers on two baskets

Hi there! Great question and sorry to hear you don't have flowers yet, but there is hope. In general, you can use a triple numbered liquid fertilizer to get your plants the nutrients they need to flower and grow healthily fast, applying it according to the label. The Espoma "Grow" is a great organic fertilizer to use with a 2-2-2 and they also have a "Bloom" formulation with 1-3-1 that really encourages your plants to flower. Here is an Amazon link: amzn.to/3SodiYn There are other synthetic liquid fertilizers out there with 5-5-5 or 10-10-10, but we have been having great success with the Espoma fertilizers the last 3 years. Oh, and on another note, the lack of flowering could be also from a combo of or just one of these; not enough full sun (6+ hours, minimum) and/or too much water. For the water, Cali's like to kept a little more on the drier side of things, so it's ok to let the first 1-2 inches of the top soil layers in your containers between waterings. Just FYI's. Hope that helps and thank you for watching!

@@SpokenGardenthanks so much for your very helpful response 💗 I purchased the beautiful flowers at a garden center in May and two months later the plants have two flowers only …. They get the sun but then dry out at center turning brown so now limiting to morning sun only. I do water enough very slowly as water runs through onto ground if I don’t and will apply that fertilizer you recommend ! Thank you much, and have a wonderful day !

We live in SC and our containers with calibrachoa start to die in August, what are we doing wrong? We water everyday because it is so hot.Watering too much? Can they come back? My husband says they get too much sun.

Hi Joan! 👋 Thank you for watching and great question. Calibrachoa can be watered too much and succumb to stem rot. If you have it planted with other plants in your containers that need lots of water and can't have some soil dryness between waterings, then you might consider moving your calibrachoa to different containers with similar watering needs. There could also be a soil pH issue with it being too high or low. Try to keep it neutral or around 7 so nutrients like Iron can be readily taken up (especially if your calibrachoa leaves are turning yellow). Hope all this helps! 👍😉
