Where was the iron ore flow serving? BSC Ravenscraig imported its iron ore through Hunterston (famously using triple-headed 37s) which I don't think would have come through Carstairs. Perhaps Hunterston imported iron ore for other BSC blast furnaces as well but doubtful as by 1990 they were all hundreds of miles away and very close to the coast (Redcar, Scunthorpe, Llanwern and Port Talbot were the only ones still open by then). Sadly Ravenscraig closed soon after this in 1992, Llanwern in 2001 and Redcar in 2015, leaving just Scunthorpe and Port Talbot today, both are precarious.

@@kevinfowkes2327 It is quite possibly that the wagons are just being moved to a different part of the country for a different flow or for works attention. No doubt all the info is lost in time.

@@locohauledforum That would definitely make the most sense, perhaps switching over some iron ore wagons from the Yorkshire or South Wales fleets.

Great video brining back so many memories for me, i have stood many times from where you were filming, the old number 2 signal box would have been just to your left, my grandparents lived directly opposite and my other grandparents lived on Park Avenue down the road where i was born many many moons ago now, both were railway families and I was the last having retired last year. Thank you for showing.

Another memory jogging film from what was a favourite haunt of mine, back in the day. I used virtually the same viewpoint, at the side of the road as well as down on the platform. A really good capture of early morning activity and the mist across the line certainly helped the atmosphere. Prior to the electrification of the Midcalder line to Edinburgh, there was much activity here with the diesel hauled Edinburgh portions being attached/uncoupled from the Anglo-Scottish services to/from Birmingham and beyond. Plus all the freight and postal traffic not seen in the urban areas. Many thanks for editing and sharing.

This was the last year of diesel services to Edinburgh...Carstairs-Edinburgh went over to electrics in May 1991 when ECML electrification was completed and through Glasgow Central - Kings Cross expresses started running via Carstairs. From memory I think splitting of most daytime expresses at Carstairs ended in 1989...by 1990 the whole train either ran to Glasgow or Edinburgh...only the Edinburgh trains needed to stop at Carstairs for reversal and loco change to diesel. Hence by the time you filmed this the heyday of lots of diesel portions to Edinburgh was already over and you can kind of tell (also it was early morning of course). There still was some portion working on the overnight services though as others have said.

What would the 86-hauled servive with a couple GUVs, BG, some Mk3s, what looks like 2 Mk2s, then some more Mk3s and a BG be? Possibly the Plymouth - Glasgow sleeper?
@BenDover-ln6ns
@BenDover-ln6ns Жыл бұрын
You’re right it is S19, made up of two portions as can be seen in that formation, with the Poole consist 2 SLP, SR Mk2 and BG which was standard. Good spot I forgot about that train. Which suggests the train with 90040 was possibly the Stranraer/ GLC. As S77 ran separately to EDW, the other portion with 90030 still not sure. No motorails on that though just pure sleepers, sure the GLC would have had motorails.

@@BenDover-ln6ns Didn't the Stranraer sleeper go via Dumfries and Kilmarnock? Pretty sure it did for most of its existence though 1990 was close to the end so perhaps its final year or so was different. It must have been a seriously late arrival in Stranraer though if it was passing Carstairs at 0600/0700. With reverse and engine change at Glasgow and the slow route via Ayr it would have arrived maybe 1000?

@@kevinfowkes2327 Hi Kevin, thanks for joining in the thread, i Think it stopped in May 90, the month this was filmed. I’m sure i’ve seen it somewhere before where it went via GLC and load 4 funnily enough. I might be wrong buy my money is that the portion goes to Stranraer, as it was probably too long to go in one train, and 90030 can drop in to the western platforms for a duff to take forward. I remember on certain sleepers in 1990 i did, they went all peculiar routes. I remember being on 1S07 once which was then 21:05 EUS-FTW only in 1990, and i woke up and the train was in Shields road depot.
@kevinfowkes2327
@kevinfowkes2327 Жыл бұрын
@@BenDover-ln6ns And I guess the peculiar routes could sometimes vary from day to day. This was filmed during the few years after the ECML sleepers were diverted to the WCML but before they seriously started to get rationalised and amalgamated in the run up to privatisation...for a short couple of years that led to a load of sleepers heading up the WCML.

I thought that would have been an Edinburgh portion that was detached from the northbound sleeper, but 90030 backed on an took it off to the north. So was that a Glasgow portion dropped off the Inverness/Fort William train?

I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 67 Octagon and Every 37 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 18 Tonnes for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!! And Please do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Australia, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

A much changed location! The tanker train, double headed by 37708 and 37188, the latter locomotive was a regular performer on the West Highland Line until the late 1980s. It also carried a name, "Jimmy Shand", after the famous Fife accordionist. The name must've been removed when it was repainted from large logo to petroleum.
