The genius of the early seasons is that the humour is aimed at everyone which is really hard to pull off. You watch some of the later episodes and it's clear that some jokes are aimed at the young people and other jokes are clearly aimed at older audiences. Old spongebob had jokes that both the young and older people could laugh at. My dad always joined us to watch spongebob back in the day because the show was just as funny to him as it was for us.

Dude, the entire town is just a complete nightmare to live in. The police force is so incompetent, yet so harsh on small crime, that it's almost borderline corrupt at times. The residence aren't just ruthless, they're bloodthirsty. There have been many occasions where a riot occurs because of something small. There have also been times where literal mobs with pitchforks and torches (don't ask) show up. Plankton has almost successfully taken over the town once (and I think more, depending on the episode you look at). In the end, everyone in Bikini Bottom (including it's own police force) is a bunch of bullies, and maniacs. This is something I always saw ever since I watched the show in the first place too, this is nothing new. It's both funny, and pretty sad in a way.

Also you can’t forget the awful dialogue, exaggerated facial expressions every 5 seconds and how they relentlessly torture Squidward and set up episodes where good things happen then he just loses everything in the end. Patrick is a real asshole in the newer seasons who has selfish intentions and only thinks about himself-Ik he’s a dumbass but in seasons 1-3 he had compassion and actually cared about Spongebob, even defending him but now he just steals and complains about everything like a bitch. Show really went downhill. Mr Krabs is even more greedy and money hungry it’s not even funny-the original cast and writers really are the best they could fit multiple jokes into a few minute scene without the need to exaggerate and overplay everything. It’s so dramatic. 💀
