D3/C1 duo here: The hardest thing for me in 2s is doing what you're talking about. I spread out with my Duo partner, but we can never get good passing plays because our brains are hardwired for 3s (even though we play 2s a ton), and we go for pressure every time. This frequently causes confusion and double commits, which in 2s is a surefire way to get scored on. On top of this, I can out mechanic BOTH enemy players at times, get a sick pass, but my partner won't be ready for it because he's spread out and assuming at least one of the other players is going to 50 me and he'll have to recover it, which ultimately makes my efforts pointless (I'm not good enough to full on finish every opportunity yet, and I'm terrible at calling out what part of the field I'm going to pass to). If I were to just return to the basics and do smart positional moves to keep possession, I'd probably be climbing much faster

Hey, good video! C3 here in 2s. I'm surprised you didn't mention power slide cuts, as I have been watching Flakes and that's literally all he does. But refreshing to see your take on it. Also, trusting teammates is important, but I think it's even more important to not expect your teammate to do what you think they're doing. Position yourself so you can cover if they miss or just do something else. One typical situation in solo queue is when teammates expect a pass and start pushing up next to you leaving your net completely open. I think passes can be good, but not looking for them constantly. You know this, but maybe someone misunderstands when you say "trust teammates".
@lukebrown76512 жыл бұрын
And then they tell you to go play 1s cuz you don't pass
@moose68692 жыл бұрын
@@lukebrown7651 and if you are never passing, then you are falling right into the same "do not expect your teammate to do what you think they're doing." The point is you do what the situation calls for. This requires paying attention to the whole game as well as possible, so you can recognize what is or is not the optimal option given that. Where is the defense, where is your teammate, is there even a realistic shot opportunity, these things and more need to be decided upon in a split second, and to accurately make these assessments you must be aware of the variables at play in answering these. Too many people assume, though, imho, passes are something that are smartest done to score goals. When actually passes are best done when trying to get the ball out of your own side of the field. Defensive outlet plays in 2's are super effective. Besides the opposing team backing off themselves, or screwing up in meta, or screwing up mechanically; they are how you as a team will get the ball out from your side of the field while also *maintaining possession* most often. Booming the ball gets it out of your side of the field, what it doesn't do is maintain possess most of the time. And that's the key to 2's, maintaining possess. Going for shots when the shots are low percentage are an easy way to give up possession for free, while also leaving your tm8 facing a 2 v 1.
@lukebrown76512 жыл бұрын
@@moose6869 the shots aren’t low percentage lol. Do you think I just go for flip resets all day? There are smart 1 person plays in twos, a lot of the time passing can get you scored on, they require both members to commit. If you don’t score it can a lot of the times lead to goals. I get what ur saying, yes passing is important but it is not always the best option.
@moose68692 жыл бұрын
@@lukebrown7651 me: "too many people assume though, imho, passes are something that are smartest done to score goals. Passes are best done when trying to get the ball out of your own side of field." "The point is that you base what ought be done based off of what the situation calls for. To make this decision accurately, you must remain aware of the surrounding game; ex: where the opposing team is and where your tm8 is." "Going for shots when the shots are low percentage; is a quick way to give up possession and leave your tm8 with a 2v1." You: Proceeds to talk about passing in an attempt to score and the drawbacks of that, and talk about times where the shot is the highest percentage chance of a good result. It appears my points flew right over your head, hoss. As for the "the shots aren't low percentage." This would be in your opinion. How many shots do you take when one or both defenders are in position to feasibly defend the shot? I would hold these are low percentage shots. You are better off bailing on the shot and playing instead to maintain possession overall. Contested shots are automatically low percentage; defense past diamond gets stingy AF. People are not just capable of saving higher level mechanical solo-plays, they do so consistently. I boil this down to the three P's, in terms of a priority list: - Positioning(How do I position so as to not give up a goal?) - Pressure(how do I make the opposing teams possession awkward for them? The answer most often is to apply pressure and make them do something they otherwise would not want to do.) - Possession(how do I get 2-3 more touches on the ball I just took possession of. Furthermore, how do I ensure my team maintains possession of I should lose it?) The prioritization is in that order; and whatever your tm8 is not doing is what you should be doing. Defense comes first; then pressure. If your tm8 is already pressuring, default to priority 1. If your tm8 is possessing the ball; default to priority 1. Playing patient defense and not stepping on your tm8's toes; basically, is the best thing to default back to. Note how scoring oneself isn't included in that? That comes as a natural result of following the 3 P's. Follow them well enough and you will be not only hard to score on, but you will inevitably secure open and unconstested shots for your team(whether that be you or others). On the note of: being aware of the wider game at hand: Let's draw a comparative to actual competitive team based sports that have a ball involved. If you pass the ball or do something *assuming* a tm8 or tm8's will be doing a particular thing and they aren't so the play goes to ish... Who gets chewed out overwhelmingly, You or the tm8? Answer: YOU DO; because why are you assuming any such thing instead of *looking* to make sure that's what's actually going on? And this is what I find so baffling about strat in rocket league. Passes are being labeled as passes when these passes do not involve looking at or even passing it towards, a tm8. If you "pass" the ball to nobody and rather throw it up hoping for the best; this isn't a pass. You have to factor in when you see professionals or people with great amounts of practice and expertise doing No-look passes and alley-oops; these people practice with the tm8's they're doing this with extensively. There is very little assumption going on because they already know beforehand what their tm8 will do. In rocket league, unless you are playing with such a tm8; this is pretty much never the case. Yet no-look passes are the standard, and we act shocked that pass plays don't work out too often. Gee; I wonder why? 😅

This strategy works for GC because instead of going for complex plays, it's about securing possession with soft touches and simple mechanics. But for a diamond for example this wouldn't work, as they don't have such solid mechanics, which I think are essential for this to work.
