I have been SSL since season 3 and been coaching for 3 years. I come to different YT coaches to see different coaching perspectives. One thing I see alot is that sometimes especially at lower ranks you will have to sit still and be patient when defending. When you are doing this make sure you backpost rotate first and then rotate inside the goal to put you at a better angle to challenge the ball or to block a shot coming at goal.

Agreed. Low level players may not have the necessary game sense to know exactly how to time their looping so that they wind up back post when the action happens. If you can't make it to the back post when u loop around u either need to focus on learning that timing(which comes naturally over time) or just be patient and don't inch up past the back post.

Yupp, my bulb broke when he said that about the diamond player. Sometimes its better to wait far post especially considering most low ranked players dont place their shots with power behind it, so you have more time to react, even when standing still... You dont wanne make low players overcommit when they cant get bakc in time or cover the area they are leaving

I personally think you glossed over the lower ranks and didn't give any real effective tips to change those habbits. You kinda got triggered and didn't explain much. Might as well have left everything up to champ out of the vid, because you didn't give any worthwhile tips for those lower ranks.

The best tip for lower ranks is to play 1s to gain more experience shooting and controlling the ball. Learn how to rotate back post instead of rotating with the ball and screwing your teammate. Doing those will boost you to diamond/c1 in 2s quickly if you stick at it for a bit.

Especially that the mistakes shown in the clips of my own rank were pretty accurate and the advice was helpful, so I can only imagine how frustrated someone in a lower rank would feel after seeing his mistakes not getting discussed and only serving as an intro to the actual content.

Its hard to coach bad play, thats why people get frustrated with this game. Practice patience focus on rotations and worth while challenges, capitalizing on turnovers is an easy way for your opponents to give up.

But i can recommend other tips for you such as: knowing when to challange and when to fake challange, keeping possession (dribbiling the ball) instead of booming the ball everytime, DO NOT commit as last man just keep fake challanging, leave the ball for your teammate when he has a better angle on the ball.

I'm not the greatest RL player, but the sitting still at net thing isn't a death sentence, unless you're not back post. Keeps you from cutting your teammate, and if you stay back post you're in good defensive position against any shot on net. Once the ball gets cleared or you see the play break down (in other words, your teammate and the opponent leave the ball open, usually by whiffing), you push the other side of the field. Goal camping in a bad position is bad. But especially when solo queueing and having no idea if your teammate is a ball chaser or not, making sure there's some sort of goal defense when the other team is threatening... again, as long as you're not in bad position, what's the harm in being at goal, waiting for an opponent's shot or mistake? It works out for me more often than not. But again, I'm not a great RL player, so I'm probably wrong lol

3:44 in plat it is common for people to completely miss the kickoff, so the opponent gets a free shot at the goal. Backing up just ensures you don't get scored on immediatelly. In higher ranks it's a mistake, but in low ranks, I'd say it's not.

I'd say there's probably about 0.5 goals per game scored directly off kickoff at that rank while the last man slowly drives to get boost in the corner. Applying GC/SSL rules to plat is what really messes up a lot of these "coaches."

I agree that he shouldn't have vacated his defensive position like Luke was suggesting because there's an active threat, the only thing I would do different is actually be IN the goal facing the play so I could drive forward to a shot on target. Him being out of the goal makes for a much more difficult save

I will say that the mechanics at diamond 2 and champ 1 were lower than what I usually see. Not calling them bad or not deserving of there rank but Ive peaked c1 and Ive seen a lot more games I play now (currently d3 div3) at around c2 level. Not necessarily mechanically although Sometimes yes but game pace definitely. Idk what others see but thats how my game usually goes 🤷🏾‍♂️

i’m a silver (ik im trash at the game) but because of my low rank my teammates dont know how to rotate so i feel the need to be a designated goalie or else it will be an open net and i’m having trouble ranking up i look at gameplay from higher ranks like gold or plat and i think i play like that but i just find myself making consistently mistakes. idk where i’m going with this paragraph but ig i’m just being inpatient because i’ve only been trying to improve intocket league for a few weeks so it will probably just come naturally with more time in the game.

I agree, as soon as he said about not having dedicated goalies I immediately knew he'd have no recent experience in low ranked games. I'm also silver, and this is my daily experience. Finding someone who actually knows about rotation is amazing, and makes for a really good game. However in most games, if I don't play the back player (not a goalie, but just the back player) we will almost certainly let in a shed load of goals.

Great content as always luke, but just some constructive criticism, Iv noticed you sort of have a tendency to talk down on lower ranks such as plat or lower and I’m not saying you’re doing it on purpose just saying that the way you speak towards higher ranks is a bit more motivating and positive compared to the way you speak to plats or lower. Tone is a big thing when trying to coach and I just feel like some lower rank players might perceive your tone as off putting. I’m personally C3 and your advice for champs was great. Just try to be a bit more positive/motivating towards the lower ranks in these types of videos.

When you are in Gold/Plat, from my experience, leaving on Kickoff to boost up Is the perfect time for your teammate to attempt a speed flip. If im solo queuing, I'm sitting in the net on Kickoff until I see what they do on Kickoff

I don't go for boost either. The number of goals I see off kickoff are absurd because the last man back lollygags his way to boost, drives on the wall for some reason, and/or turns upfield while the world's easiest stop rolls into the net. Or the teammate who should be going for kickoff is completely napping and either doesn't go at all or doesn't move for a full second and then never makes it to the ball. AirChargedRL's 2v2 series he rails against going for boost too, and I wouldn't unless you are able to get to boost fast enough to get back to cover up a messed up kickoff, and I can say for sure that most people are not fast enough.

I was kind of surprised tbh. Luke is generally very humble in the videos I've seen, but here he is asking for 2v2 replays of every rank in his discord to use for his videos, and as a gold player you send him some hoping to get a few tips and tricks, but all you got was pushed down and embarrassed for being a gold. No one sending in replays to a coach should feel like they have to apologize for how they played in them, the only one who should apologize here is Luke.

Wish more people cared to work on improving. And I mean outside of “special” mechanics. Too many players are only working on flip resets and air dribbles. Clearly beneficial mechanics to have in the tool bag, but useless for 98% of players on this game. This explains why all my 2s teammates just chase and solo play. No one seems to care about the most important aspect of rocket league: game sense. Anticipation. Common sense. Etc etc. Wish I hadn’t seen this video for one reason: it just reaffirmed my strong suspicion of how CRIMINALLY under-ranked I am (Champ 1 in 2s). I often make fun of a lot of people for how bad they are, and not deserving of the rank they have. Usually these are bought accounts or they were carried there (by super good players or they got some lucky teammates like me). And it’s been an epidemic for years. This all explains why as a diamond 1 I was easily scoring, passing, defending, leading lobbies in private matches with Champ 2s and 3s. Yes, nerd who read this and thinks you can’t blame teammates for one’s low rank….you can 100% blame teammates. It also explains why the game has been dying. 😄

I’m diamond 1-2 and I often find myself sitting still in the net waiting on my teammates who want to cut rotation. How bad is it in these situations to sit backpost? I never sit middle of jet but when I do find myself awkwardly stopped I make sure to be backpost

sitting still in net is one of the worst thing you can do in rocket league, its okay to wait for teammates, but make sure you still have momentum, just do what luke said, rotate with a wider radius, or better yet, shadow defense

Sitting in net is fine, the problem is not giving yourself the room to get momentum and general misspositioning, plus there are a ton of situations that will leave you having to sit in net, no boost, teammates double commit/completely throw themselves out of the play, dodging bumps, etc. As long as you arent trying to be a perma goalie in the matches you should be fine, because one of the things he got right in this video is that there are no roles in RL. Everyone does everything.

So I've been playing rl since August of this year, so at about 3 months, I'm in Plat and trying to break thr threshold into diamond. I've been diamond one time with season 5 but fell out pretty quick, for someone who's pretty Nad mechanically but has a good sense of rotation and positioning, how would you suggest I go about improving to break that threshold? I agree that he didn’t exactly coach. But he did really point out his mistakes well, though. You can really see that the diamond one’s main problem was momentum and rotation. Shadow defence is also underrated in the entirety of lower ranks
