We've recently talked about the Medium Caliber Anti-Armor Automatic Cannon program (MCAAC) and the impressive 75mm XM274 Ares cannon that spawned from it. I've also talked about the High Survivability Test Vehicle Lightweight (HSTV-L), a concept vehicle that used said gun. However, we haven't really touched on the tank that was actually supposed to go into service with such a potent weapons system. After the success of the HSTV-L, AAI Corporation set about improving it and preparing it for combat. This led to the RDF/LT, the Rapid Deployment Force Light Tank. The RDF/LT has quickly become my all-time favorite tank, with its high performance and practicality. I hope Gaijin adds it someday.

The US Army AND Marines both asked AAI for the light tank of the future, and the company happily provided. And then both branches said "lol nevermind, we didn't actually think you'd be able to pull it off. Maybe don't do so well next time, eggheads." and continued banging rocks together. "Speed could substitute armor." Until modern gun control systems came to be. Speed is still useful, but not as a way to "dodge tank". Same as how widespread thermals ended soviet low profile tank design philosophy. Back during Desert Storm. It took this long for russians to get the memo... Hearing about the production vehicle development and how they used M113 and Sheridan components, makes one wonder if it would have worked better then irl if it could "cooperate" with Bradley instead.

Low profile soviet tanks is more about reduced weight than reduced target profile. Something Ukraine has proven to be of vital importance. It's always strange to me just how close all of these concepts came to matching every one of their goals... yet still failed. I wonder if you'd do a video kind of talking about what US Army doctrine, force structure, and combat strategies and deployments would look like if vehicles like this WERE actually adopted and became the norm. My personal opinion is that these types of vehicles were just so radically different from what everyone thinks of when they think "tank", especially in a world where the Abrams, Leopard 2 and T-72 spring to mind immediately, that they were always going to be viewed as a bit weird and wacky to be taken seriously in the way that a traditional MBT is. Their design must have thrown a lot of people off, but when you think about it, the heavy/super heavy tank gave way to the MBT in much the same way - smaller gun, less focus on armor, and a light, faster and more versatile vehicle for it. Saying "hey this lil' 75mm gun can punch through as much armor as an M1 can, but do it once every second at the same range while weighing little enough to be air droppable and heli transportable AND having better anti-air capability"... must have made the Abrams look a little superfluous. I bet GD loved that

I remember hearing about a weapon system of a large caliber meant to act as an AA and AT gun. I think it was around the 150mm range. Though this makes me wonder, how effective would an all purpose gun be? Able to lock and fire onto aircraft, target modern day MBT's, and provide artillery support from far ranges? Sounds like one of those things you'd hear of the US trying to produce a Jack of All Trades tank but fails at everything.

You forget to note the full quote. “A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Given you could design and use canister shells to fit the gun of the vehicle, it be fairly superb at being an anti-infantry vehicle, while being moderate at tackling other challenges such as other armored vehicles, fortifications, and aircrafts at a fair speed for its fire rate. Depending on the environment, have a set loadout of ammunition, in an urban environment, most of the shells being canister shells while the rest is normal AP shells or APCR or something. In an open field against opposing armor, it could be equipped with mainly AP or APCR shells with some HE and canister shells for infantry and small fortifications such as small rapidly built bunkers. This tank is something I kind of wished had happened so we could have better seen how it performed in combat… the same for IS-7 to me, it’s pike nose armor, combined with modern day reactive armor as well, I would have liked to see Howe that would have turned out. Even more so, our modern day engines and motors could better improve its ability to perform potentially given some of tanks used 1500hp engines while quite some tanks of the past used 500hp engines.

@lector-dogmatixsicarii1537

@@matthiuskoenig3378 Full caliber shot has more to it. APFSDS is a subcaliber piercing round. You sacrifice force and mass for putting energy on a fine point at speed. Shooting light armor with AP shot and SAP is going to be more devastating. Repeated 25lb mass strikes on a wider area vs 5lbs imparting less distress. It will take less ammo to shred something like a BMD, PT, BTR, or 2S3. The argument of HEAT comes up, but that relies on a lot of ideal factors to match and of course your fuse needs to work. The BTR ambush incident involving HEAT-FS rockets shows that people overestimate it. I am going to bring up my version of HSTVL autism in the 120mm M58, because there was the US version shooting 120mm full caliber shot, wearing much more on the barrel, and the British variant with APDS. The full caliber shot was particularly nasty on a strike by strike basis which had the Soviets changing up the T-10 from 1957 to 1967 in panic and making tanks like the T-64. It's not just the penetration, but also the mass effect.

Give it the ability to take and swap out mission packages like capacity for dismounts, a command vehicle for wingman UCGVs or UCAVs, a SPAAG for dealing with the increasingly likely reality of having to operate without friendly air dominance in some theatres or a light artillery piece that could put 10 rounds into the air in as many seconds while having the ability to have them hit simultaneously _and_ redeploy as soon as it's done firing etc. like an updated M113 but truly modular.

Closest thing USSR had at the time was ZSU-57. Later modifications, with right ammunition, could effectively engage helicopters, planes, infantry and even some tanks. Full-auto double barrel 57mm gun is not a joke.

Ooh ooh! Do CTA International's CTAS40 40mm cased telescopes fully automatic autocannon for the Warrior and Ajax IFVs. It's got an Automatic ammunition Handling System (AHS) allowing it to fire: APFSDS-T GPR-T (General Purpose, smart point or air burst detonation) A3B-T (anti air prox)

This concept is very important for light reaction forces , the gun is ideal for urbane tactical . Just look how successful the Toyota pick up has been in the roll of urban fire suppression and tactical support.

a modern 30 ton compact tank seems to be a good idea to fill a gap. a C17 has an 85 ton capacity. being able to quickly deliver a dozen heavily armored compact tanks anywhere in the world is a powerful tool. I wonder if you could create a compact tank with armor comparable to the Abrams and keep it around 30 tons?

Would love to see a video on Challenger 1. I know it's not that good of a tank, but I have a love/hate relationship with it. Plus it still has the record for longest tank to tank kill 😁

So to put it short, a few people at the top quite literally just got upset that they didn't get their way and dropped a fairly good vehicle concept, not even concept, it has shown to be useful. I feel like they just complained about its "issues" just to have something to complain about, because it met all requirements, and it could take care of all threats listed pretty well. maybe not great, but like you said its a jack of all trades. good at many, but not great in any single category. Real shame because that tank honestly, especially now with the current warfare climate, can be very useful. Its small, packs a punch and can deal it out fairly rapidly. It being able to be deployed quickly is also a very nice thing to add and makes logistics easy if anything. We could have spent time perfecting this then coughing up more random designs like we are in 2022-2024. Especially with the advent of drones, an airburst round for the 75 would of been perfect for this role, swat out drones like a mini flak gun.

Otomatic was too pure for this world. It was recalled to heaven since we were not worthy. Something something recently purchased Geptards and market saturation cock blocking sales like a BT1000 assaulting the manager for looking at a nice piece of Otomagic ass. Imagine being a helicopter formation and suddenly OTOMATIC. Light skin convoy and suddenly OTOMATIC. Imagine being SEAD going after Carl's radar and taco shack and suddenly... **scream of pain and hell** OTOMATIC

Im curious if you could do a how bad/ good is such and such vehicle on the Leclerc and challenger 2 as they seem to be the most looked down upon NATO MBTs, especially the leclerc being considered a bad vehicle or just overlooked/ignored by various people (in all fairness I thought of the thing being a bit "meh" myself and I thought the challenger was just ok) so it'll be interesting to be enlightened on these two from available info and how effective they are in their doctrine.
