Troy, this was always one of my favorite bass lines to play with my old band. Thanks for covering this gem!

My band hired a sound guy. Spooky was in our set, and we took it out after the sound guy explained how other bands played it--in great detail. He knew all the different spins bands put on it and it just kind of ruined the song. But I like hearing Troy play it! (I play keyboard, not bass, btw.)

Good one TJ. This is a track I would not think would be a "showcase" cover. It's been called on pickup gigs and I played it with the attitude of "Okay, E to A...got it). But the little fills and rhythmic variances make it a well constructed track. The little bit of growl you give it is a nice touch as well.

Also my first Spector was a white NS-2A from 87? Bought it in 1995 when I was 23. Wish I still had it. Replaced with a real Woodstocl NS-2. Love the feel and playability.

Very cool! Can I ask you, did you feel that there was a dramatic jump in value (quality, tone, playability…) between the NS2A and the NS2?

What a great song. Great guitar solos. People don't put ARS up on the same high pedestals as they do Allman Brothers and Skynyrd, but they were a stellar band - in the studio and live.
@TJH31136 ай бұрын
It is a pretty cool song, isn't it? To be honest, I'm not really familiar with much of their material aside from this song and their other big hit (I can't think of the name).
@DonnyOsmosis6 ай бұрын
I don’t know how “big” they were in upstate NY, but they were all over Midwest radio in the late 70s, 1980, 81 (when Molly Hatchet and 38 Special took over). I guess their hits fall under the “Yacht Rock” banner now.

Paul Goddard was known for his Ric basses but occasionally used a Peavey T40 in the studio. He was on a Peavey catalog or brochure shown with a T40. Incidentally, there is a great article about Goddard in the August Vintage Guitar magazine. Great cover, Troy. As always I learned to listen to the spaces and not overthink this tune. Thanks.

Love those Spector basses! I still have my USA 88' NS-2O(oil finish). The original import Haz-Lab preamp was okay but I had a current day US pre-amp installed and it sounds just like an NS-2. Great cover as always Troy.
@TJH31136 ай бұрын
Me too. This has the K-HAZ clone which, I think, sounds as good as the US HAZ. I've got a US HAZ in the two p/u MBJ bass. The MightyMite clones also sound really good. As I started climbing the quality/price ladder on these basses I came to believe that these basses are the best value. I really don't think I'd be getting a lot more out of a $5,000+ US model. Thank you very much!

@TJH31136 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it! I was actually surprised to learn that it came out in 1979! I'd have thought it was early-70's. I have seen Ellen, but don't go out of my way to watch her. Of course, she's very good, but she seems to have started off with A LOT of advantages. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm not a hater, but I think she's got enough admirers without me.

What are your thoughts on the playability of the Spector?
@TJH31136 ай бұрын
I think they are very comfortable to play and I've had no issues with any of them... and I'm traditionally not a p/j guy.
@rickrolli70916 ай бұрын
@@TJH3113 that's what I've heard. P/J is a real versatile bass. And it's a reverse P as well. It just depends on what tones you are trying to create. Does the reverse P help even out the tone?
@TJH31136 ай бұрын
@@rickrolli7091 I was talking more about plucking over a P/J configuration. I was more comfortable playing over humbuckers and wider pick ups. I think that the reverse P configuration has a huge impact on the sound. Joe is building me one more bass that will be a single, reverse precision pick-up pushed back a bit towards the bridge.
@rickrolli70916 ай бұрын
@@TJH3113 playing over humbucker are nice because you have more space to pant your thumb for different tones. that's cool on your custom bass. You'll have to do a video of it.
