Spooky's House Of Jump Scares Is Really Cool

Five Nights At Freddy’s, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Hello Neighbor, Poppy Playtime, and Garten of BanBan. Now it feels like almost every other popular indie horror game is just another clone from that sub genre, starting from the one that made it explode in popularity in the earlier years being Five Nights At Freddy's. Though it wouldn't be the last since others like Bendy and the Ink Machine and Hello Neighbor would try to ride this wave as well. This created a downward spiral of games that just wanted to copy the same formula in order to make a basic horror game to scare people with some cheap jump scares such as the infamous Poppy Playtime series and most notably, Garten of BanBan. With an oversaturation of these types of games, how does one indie horror game created all the way back in 2014 somehow hold up to today's standards? Basically this is the whole playthrough of Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion and why it's so scary. Grab a snack, relax, and munch on some food while watching this short review of a horror game that creates real fear.

Fun fact about specimen 9: In most rooms, if you stand around doing nothing for too long he'll come out and turn u into past tense (unless u have the game paused, then he won't appear). Also there's a room with an infinite hallway that he'll appear in if u walk down that hallway for too long

On the outside of his room right before the battle you can see the number 731 next to his room. This combined with a bunch of lore in the game indicates that Specimen 9 was a victim of unit 731 during world war 2.

@@insomniacloserxo I haven't actually played the game myself but apparently according to the wiki some monsters from the Karamari Hospital DLC also appear in Endless Mode with different behaviour so I recommend checking out Karamari Hospital before Endless Mode

Another note about the little cat talking about therapy and such, it can also be seen as a reference to Madoka Magica, a magical girl anime that is deceptively cute and goes into horrific depictions of the mind, puberty, trauma, ect. A tiny cute thing forcing you to confront yourself has many parallels to Madoka Magicas Kyubey, especially with the jump from cute to terrifying demon of an entity. That's just my personal viewpoint on the entity tho!

By the way Spooky did give unlimited stamina as you could swing the axe around without stamina draining. It's just that Spooky took away your capacity to use stamina to sprint. So Spooky did not lie unlimited stamina also notice how she phrased her words when she said she'd give you unlimited stamina. Also by taking your ability to sprint which uses stamina she gives you ""unlimited stamina that will never run out" just as she said she would gift you because the stamina bar doesn't deplete.

actually, I used Cheat Engine once and messed with the stamina meter in such a way that it didn't change colour when she did that, and it did still drain using the axe. I think it just overlays the entire thing purple and disables your sprint

Alot of people compare Specimen 8's death scene being way better than 11's, which is true, but give McDemon a break. After all, McDemon's death maze did pave the way for 8 getting his amazing forest in the HD renovation.

Deer Lord is such a common pick for a favorite specimen, but how can i not when it is such an omminous presence? It feels so perfect, design wise, mechanic wise and the fact that it introduces you to what will set between you being good or evil. Side notes: Subject 5's death screen really works for me, because it feels like a death screen, rather than just a jumpscare, and the text doesn't overstate it's welcome and it adds a lot to the death screen. The way Ben is the first specimen that changes the way to deal with the enemy is sure able to catch people off guard, and when the jumpscare is THAT GOOD you really set up a lot of good expectations for the rest of the death screens. Also i completely agree with your points for Ringu, she had such an amazing presentation but the death screen is very mediocre, the first half of Ringu suddenly jumping at the screen is very eerie, but the text is just... weird, i'm sure there are more people who jacked off to it rather than being scared.

This is one of the only horror games where the whole time i am absolutely terrified. The creepiness and chance of encountering a specimen go really well. Not only that, this game is hard. Well, it’s hard but fair. You will 99% of the time die if you stop running but as long as you keep moving and know where you’re going, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The monster designs are creepy and disturbing. Especially in the endless mode. This game is absolutely horrifying and i loved every second of it. 10/10 would get scared again

Hi, local Specimen 3 lover here. I’m gonna explain why I personally like the big ol’ centipede boy. Not only is Specimen 3 pretty damn adorable, but in the HD Remake it being faster than your walking speed actually makes it quite threatening in some scenarios (especially in Endless Mode). Not to mention the disturbing garbled noises and the clicking of its claws as it runs after you. Speaking of running- it charging through doors or hitting walls while trying to round a corner is very funny to me. And it hitting you and dashing away is pretty cute ngl. So yeah- this guys pretty goofy and I love him to death. Wouldn’t call him my favorite specimen (specimen 8 has that title), but I love him nonetheless.

Specimen 8 is my favorite, both for the reasons in the video, but for a few of my own. 1. Its area is an interesting one. It takes place outside. A player might think they’ve escaped and maybe ask if it was really so easy, only to realize that they can’t see the sky. 2. The fact that a deer was chosen as opposed to, say, a wolf intrigues me. Deer are usually seen as docile creatures, often fleeing when humans approach. Bambi might come to mind. They’re usually towards the bottom of the food chain, only feeding on grass and fleeing from hungry predators. But not here. In this place, the deer are the predators. The laws of the wild have no place here. Much like Specimen 8 itself, the way the deer behave isn’t natural. Humans often thinks highly of themselves, that we are at the top of the food chain because of technological advancements and whatnot. Specimen 8 and its cervid servants illustrate just how soft we are when we don’t have our guns to hide behind. After all, if a deer doesn’t run away from you, how threatening can you be? 3. I also like the deer puns you can make.

46:42 Giygas was actually more complicated than just "evil alien". A forewarning: this is gonna be long af and spoilery for Mother 1 and 2 (aka Earthbound). He was raised by two (abducted) humans George and Maria, who treated him like their own son. Maria genuinely loved him and he loved her back. Then his adoptive father escaped to Earth after learning PSI, the alien's power. That triggered the invasion of Earth to try to get it back once Giygas was mature. Giygas didn't want to do it, but his people demanded it so he distanced himself from his beloved mother. Later he even offers to save Ninten (the protag of Mother 1), the great grandson of Maria and George, showing on some level he still cares. You know the song we learn in Earthbound? It was the lullaby Maria sang to him when he was a child, which is used in the fight against Giygas in Mother 1. It makes him vulnerable because he's overwhelmed by his emotions. His form in Earthbound is a result of that, he was broken by his grief over the death of Maria, exerted himself too much and kinda self destructed. He is reduced to, as that little bastard Pokey put it "an almighty idiot". It's the outpouring of emotion from Paula's Pray that again overwhelms him and helps us defeat him. His weakness was love and the pain that resulted from his rejection of it. He was definitely evil, I just wanted to say he was not a simple evil. Sorry if someone else said this (likely more succinctly than I did), I looked a bit but didn't see anything.

25:09 Yeah, the Specimen 3 death screen was made years down the line, and you can really tell. The hellgate death screen for Specimen 4 is phenomenal though, I love it. 30:11 Most of the song titles in this game are something ominous and something innocent combined. Strawberry probably has nothing to do with anything, much like "sin" in the first note. The first part is likely a reference to the unpure sacrifice, as well as the themes of Silent Hill 2. The sounds are also a reference to that, and I love how they create this dissonance. 31:46 Surprising considering your mention of tropophobia earlier. Honestly, this death screen may not be creepy, but it certainly has the best writing of the early specimens. "Cold swarming death" has to be one of my favorite lines. 1:03:28 Yeah this one's weird. It's mostly inspired by Little Big Planet horror, coming from a custom level that the creator made in that game. Not very creepy, but I still really like food demon. They have more connection with Christianity than fast food, oddly enough. I think the concept of disorienting the player is really cool, because it instills panic. It also makes you really learn the room layouts. 1:07:40 ... really? You complain about the disorienting specimens, as well as most of the death scenes, but you sing the praises of the most boring mechanic in the game? This is my least favorite room because literally all you do here is wait for ages. You completely lost me here. 1:09:44 This is literally the most boring and easy to deal with specimens of the original lineup, what the hell are you talking about?

Really good video. I haven’t seen a lot of content on Spooky’s talking about the specimens since SuperHorrorBro covered the game and I’m impressed. I think someone has pointed it out but Specimen 9 also has a chance to appear outside of the boss arena in it’s usual form rather that be from idling in a room for too long or if you are unlucky enough to get the infinite hallway room (which is a guaranteed game over) I’m not sure if you’re gonna do a follow-up video on the DLCs and Endless Mode specimens (The latter even has a shout-out to Fnaf) but I would highly recommend checking those out as well

idk if this is intentional to the theme of the fast food area but the yellow fog along with the red along some walls in the play tunnels- or really just the whole fast food area in general- makes me think about how i heard red and yellow are colors that were used by mcdonalds cause i think they symbolized some things like making people feel hungrier or impulsive

I love this game so much, it's the only game that has ever given me a panic attack, which may seem bad, but that goes to show how the specimens can be amazing if they line up with a fear you have, and also the environment they are in, for me, the parasite is the scariest, you can't run away from it and that's my main way of getting out of danger. Specimen 3's death screen was added to the game significantly later compared to the rest and it outright didn't have one for the longest time, which is why it looks so much better compared to some of the others (Specimen 4's death screen for example still uses its 2D iteration since it was one of the earliest death screens)

i think the fear you were talking about during the specimens 3 death scene was trypophobia, also during the specimen 4 section you say none of the creatures before ringu flew over holes but Goop does, you can see it in your footage dont blame ya though goop is forgettable, also with the old man its based off some old game that i cant remember the name of i think it was called “the lighthouse”, final note is that you dont really talk about the taker very much, despite having one of the most insane backstories out of any specimen, being a man who suffered through the imperial japanese unit 731, a thing from WW2 which was…… fricked up to say the least it was really really bad

The centipede aroused a terrible and visceral fear in me. There have been nights when mice kept me up into the wee hours of the morning by scurrying around my room, making a skittering sound. I suppose I came to associate that sort of noise with sleeplessness and dread. The best specimen is specimen nine, the Deer Lord. He evokes a flavorful, powerful, and cerebral fear. The centipede gives me visceral chills like the others don't.

Hey, don't wanna be a nerd or anything but specimen 10's death screen has a hidden meaning, where the text wants you to become monki (give up your humanity), while the binary that flashes for small moments say you are more than just an animal, use the soul you have been given and be responsible for your actions. It is in binary because you don't understand that language now because of the infection. On the final note, my source was Pakpak's video about Spooky's
