I've never read a horror book before, so I wouldn't know where to start! In terms of movies though, I have a few go-tos for spooky season but Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" is my absolute favorite.
@NerdyKathi3 ай бұрын
It's not for everyone but if you are interested you could start with Stephen King.

Dan Simmons is such a great horror writer! The Terror and Drood are some of my all-time favorites, but I haven't read Song of Kali. Hope you have a great spooky reading month!

Great video. Your reading group sounds fun. I plan to read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, A Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie and as many mysteries and ghost stories, haunted houses and witch books I can get from the library for the rest of the season.

Thank you Joyce. Oh wonderful, glad to see others getting into the spirit of spooky season.

Hi Kathi, thank you so much for making this video. I will definitely read horror in October, but I don’t have a TBR since I am also a mood reader. I hope you have lots of fun reading spooky books in October 💀👻🎃

Since 2021 I have been reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula with Dracula Daily. We follow the story chronologically from May to November via the diary entries. I also reread Slewfoot by Brom every October. It’s one of my all time favorites and the paintings in the book are beautiful.

Stoker's Dracula is well worth reading again. I've been meaning to try Brom.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I hope you enjoy Black Mouth. It’s very dark and a bit of an ode to Stephen King’s IT.

You've welcome. Ohhh that makes Black Mouth sound even more interesting.

It's a fun video. My birthday month is oct so i have always felt unfair that it was considered as a horror month. I see it as a peaceful month because we can look forward to a cool and beautiful season.

I decided a couple of weeks ago to only read horror books in October too! And Tender Is The Flesh is on my list! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about what you read as I'm always looking for new horror book recommendations! (I'm currently warming myself up with pet Sematary 🐈⬛)

Clive Barkers Book of Blood is a classic of the genre. Midnight Meat Train is one of my favorite Stories from that book and they made a movie too, i still search for the uncut version. As for Ghost Stories Shirley Jackson is a recommendation, very dark stories. I like Horror Movies but with a grain of salt like the Final Fantasy movies. The Omen gave me Nightmare as a kid, I saw the devil everywhere in the dark:-) Interesting that Halloween season in Australia is in the spring completely different atmosphere. The hat looks great Kathi with cloak and wand you can act as Professor Macgonogall:-)

I have to try Book of Blood soon. I really liked Haunting of Hill House so will check out Jackson’s short stories. Thank you Michael! 😂 I actually got offered a cloak but turned it down. Great compliment though.

I love your hat! I’m not as much into horror, but I may try Never Whistle at Night (Indigenous horror collection) and Out There Screaming (Black horror anthology). Maybe I’ll do better with short stories! Enjoy your reads!

I'm looking forward to watching the new Salems lot film. I love Ira Levin, Stepford Wives, A kiss before dying etc. Graham Masterton for me is on a par with james Herbert. I've read many of your selections so I'm looking forward to your opinion on them when you pick some to read. I'm going into town tomorrow to choose some horror books.

I won't torture myself with horrors. I tried it, I really did. Three times in my life. With Rosemary's Baby, then The Exorcist and then with The Blair Witch Project. While I recognized their qualities from the craft point of view, I had enough. I'm scared to be scared 😅and that's including books, films, zombies, ghouls... I decided to put aside the whole genre (yes Stephen King too - the only book I read from him was On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft)... even the Tim Burton rubs me in wrong way, can't help it 🤷♀
@NerdyKathi2 ай бұрын
I understand completely. Some genres are simply not for us. Thankfully there are many others to choose from.

I'm reading Robert McCammon's Swan Song. It's excellent. I actually like him better than King. They write the same type of Horror only McCammon's writing is tighter.
@NerdyKathi3 ай бұрын
I haven't read McCammon yet but I'm interested to find out how he holds up next to King for me.
@cmsand3 ай бұрын
I can second that! Ive read King my whole life, but as an adult Ive had more issues about how he writes his female characters. I found McCammon through associations in King’s reviews, and picked up his historical fiction Speaks the Nightbird. It’s excellent! I find his plot follow through and endings much more satisfying to King’s. I’ve been saving his horror for October, and can’t wait to dig in.
@NerdyKathi3 ай бұрын
I'm surprised you have issues with King's females. Obviously I'll have to wait to read McCammon before I can speak on how I find him.
