Pretty sure they were also using them wrong. Face masks are designed to prevent the outward spread of airborne pathogens, not the intake. That's what ventilators do. Healthy people shouldn't wear surgical masks unless around someone immunocompromised, so that said immunocompromised person doesn't get sick. Or when performing a surgery to minimize the risk of infection.
