The scene where nyatto (little brother) fully revives his sister with the flower made me cry a bit since it has more weight to it when you know the creator’s backstory and death. Nekojiru was a very troubled person who felt that there was more evil than good in the world, which I kinda agree on tbh. Nyako (the sister) was very clearly a stand-in character for her as she would draw herself as her in her diary mangas and (probably) based her personality after her own too. Which is why this scene has such an emotional weight to it considering the film was a tribute to her and her passing. Nyakko being brought back by the flower can be seen as what it could have been like to save nekojiru. Except, as much as we wish that could happen, we know it never will. Nekojiru, along with all others who passed, are gone forever and there nothing we can do about it. No adventures, no magic flowers, no happy endings, which is captured by the ending as everyone and everything disappears. If you have loved ones who seem like their going through dark things and are in need of company, please reach out to them and let them know that their loved. As dark and dangerous life can get, it’s still an important gift that should be treasured and spent to its fullest. Rest in peace Chiyomi ♥️
@ravnn_3 жыл бұрын
I think the thought of life being able to disappear so easily like the way the family zapped out at the end does make life feel scary and futile, but for me personally, despite all of that, I think its not completely all bad. I think even if the brother's efforts could have been for nothing (because they disappeared so easily despite all they went through), the fact that his love for his sister was so strong that he went through all of that to help her is really touching. It reminds me that people can be so close and care about each other so much that they'd go through difficult things to just help them. We all eventually die, and we can die ultimately at any time, but I think the bonds people make and the sincere love and care people feel makes the temporary time of our lives worth it. Our lives don't last forever (whether we live a long life or zap away unexpectedly), and that's inevitable, so we might as well make the most of our time/try our best/appreciate the good things life has to offer while we are here.
@snapesnappedsaidsiriusseriousl3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the meaning of the movie is when you die either you believe in an afterlife and have adventures, which is what the little brother experienced with his sister, or you just cease to exist, like just zipping up into nothingness at the end. If the creator felt like her reality wasn't real, the maybe this is her way of showing both an optimistic and pessimistic view of death, which, as someone who lived with suicidal ideation for over a decade, I thought about both these variations a lot. Would I see my loved ones or would I just cease to have any more thoughts. This often kept me from attempting suicide again because I was scared I'd still have thoughts, or "exist", but I'd be like reincarnated and have to suffer life all over again. Does that make sense?

As someone who suffers from suicidal ideations daily, I have these thoughts a lot. There's endless possibilities as to what will happen to our soul/consciousness after we die and yet no one to this day knows, still. This makes me fear death mainly cuz of fear of the unknown, but I'd also be curious of what will happen in the afterlife. Perhaps it'll be better than this current life, or it will not, we never know.

I was thinking, it doesn't seem like a sad/messed up ending, maybe I'm not a pessimistic person but here's my theory on the movie(I haven't seen the movie myself but just off this review this is what I think) Long theory ahead The brother cat died and this effects the sister cat as people from the area chat about it (this explains the women cats talking when he was chasing his sister from the monster thing and which one of them unzips and is just full of hot air), the sister cat then thinks about taking her own life (which may explain the monster dragging the sister cat away from her home) and her brother doesn't want her to die yet and chases after her. There the monster and her brother start fighting over the sister (maybe symbolizing her almost dying from the s word and her brother from the other side is trying to stop her)this pulls her soul apart and the only way to get her the way she was isn't to convince her to see the beauty is life again (symbolism to the flower). Then after brother returns half her soul to her body she's left alive but half of what she used to be (after her brothers death and her failed suicide attempt) the movie from there is just the sister cat going to the store (brother cat I feel like is just a ghost watching her from the after life) and trying to convince her of all the beauty in the world (the carnival,the ocean, the dessert) but sisters pessimistic or stone cold attitude makes all these things scary or dangerous (this explains the things that keep trying to kill them. Carnival=death or evil creationists, Ocean=starvation, dessert= being eaten alive and etc) towards the end the brother manages to change her mind with a flower 🌸 (this is could mean even though she went through all these terrible things, she didn't die and that she's still going even though she wanted to die and that her brother protected her despite being dead) she starts to see the beauty is the world again and is now whole:) now with the comfort that her brother is still with her and her family and she can finally move on and enjoy the food with her family. For the ending I think that it could mean that instead of mourning the brothers death they've( the family) finally learned to move on and that he's still with them even if he died. And the turning off the TV could be the little brother watching them from the afterlife idk

Well, at the end of the day I think the meaning is that at the end of everything, you won’t forget the time spent with your family, friends and the people around you. Sure everything will come to an end but the way the cats lived looked like they lived it up to the fullest until whatever happened in the end. Maybe the ending symbolizes death or it’s the process of death, but they were deleted with normalcy around them

this is one of my faves - so happy u covered it! it stuck with me since i felt the ending was very melancholy, but i like to think of an alternate ending, which is that the brother halfway died which led him to help bring his sister back from the brink of death. the family disappears at the end, since people eventually all die and that final death, after living out a regular life, is why the boy ends up alone in the end. alternately, yeah, it could be that he died and imagined helping his sister as his final moments and even tho he went on a journey, it was just a final fantasy of his before he completely died. and since his sister also disappeared maybe she ended up living and he was actually the child that died. the ending credits always get to me, too, how the frame repeats. i wonder if it means that we try to hold onto the good memories until they’re worn out like old tapes. 🤔

Alot can be said about the movie, as well of how many references you can find of the author’s manga, especially her diary manga and Nekogami-san(the two cats with wings at the circus) You can find a documentary about her life and her spouse on youtube, as well as the Nekojiru mini-series which are more of a malice tune just like Nekojiru Udon, the manga were the siblings come from. The spouse is still active and goes by the name Nekojiru-y For me, I feel like the movie is portraying nostalgia and loss, of something that was there and now is gone. In the credits scene, its a shutter of photos of the family trying to take a photo at the beach, while on the beat of a musical box, restarting each time. A time when the family was together, a memory now of times long gone. There is a silence during certain scenes were the siblings are hanging out, they play as happy moments in the past. I think the last moment were they disappeared, its those moments that were so common when one is young and are no longer there.

Seeing the thumb nail brings up some memories little me buried away in my brain. Hell, talking about this fills me with dread 2-ish decades later (give or take). I remember getting this movie as a birthday gift when I was turning somewhere between 5-9 (I'm 25 now). My cousin knew I loved Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and other anime as a child and bought Cat Soup as a birthday present, most likely because of the cover (And more than likely didn't read the back and only went by the cover, at least that is my assumption after reflecting back on this event). I don't really remember the circus part among the other surreal stuff but one thing that makes my skin crawl is the part where the dude tries to cut up the cats only to get cut up himself. For some reason THAT was the part that made little me scream for my mother though either I didn't understand what was happening or maybe I didn't want to admit I was scared. It was my birthday and I was probably trying to be a "big kid because I just got older so big kids can't be scared!" but couldn't take it anymore. At least that is the explanation that makes sense to me. Never got to see the ending until now. Even now I feel some primal sense of dread when I watch this. Amazing video and thank you for drudging up old memories in the best way possible! Definitely a blast from the past.
