I`m 2 months shy 75 years old and this is how we did this when I was a kid. We`d always be reminding our mothers not to throw away their empty thread spools. Sadly, it`s difficult to get those spools nowadays, since they`re usually made of plastic. However, I`ll keep searching. Thanks for the great tutorial. It really brought back a lot of memories of sitting and `corking`on the front porch on rainy days. lol

Wooden spools are the best, but you're right, they're really hard to find. I have about a half dozen that were in a vintage sewing kit tin I bought on Etsy a few years ago. Cheers to happy memories!

Now they sell the equivalent in craft stores, so you don't need to find wooden spools, although that is how I learned too. If you go in to Jo Ann's or Michael's, they should have them.

Thanks for this like your other poster did these as a kid, I'm 73. Wanted a refresher and you have supplied it. Going to show my 8 year old granddaughter how to do it, she'll like it. Just recently showed her how to do Cats Cradle.

I made these cords as a child. But I find a small crochet hook much easier. I already had them cuz I'd already learned to crochet by 8 yrs old. Think I'd like to start doing this again. For fun. It's great for grandkids. Thanks for reminder!!! TFS Austin TX USA

Never have I ever seen the spools. I remember those plastic looms from the 70s. I suspect this is the dame technique. Loved this video. I'm off to rig a version plastic candy jar!😃🙏

Thank you so much for the video. Easy to follow 👌 now to find my wooden spools so that i can make smaller icords. I have found that the distance between the pegs effects how loose/tight the knits are in the i-cord. I have a knitting knooby and an i-cord with crochet thread makes a thin n small cord, but it is very airy and doesnt have the icord look.

Such clear instructions, without the added wraps! I love it! Would you mind if I included a link to your video with my written instructions in some kits my guild is making?

If you make enough of it/make super long cords & don't mind spending the time, can you use the wider version of this type of cord(s),(like when u use a t.p.roll size circle to make the cord,I assume it'd be a thicker cord oitcome & closer to bulky 5/6 or jumbo 7 yarn)to hand/finger crochet a chunky blanket? I know it sounds weird & may be more work than some people think is worth doing this for, lol!!

What happens when you make a mistake? Is there any coming back from it, or do you have to start over?

Could you add more stiches than 4? Does it have to be an even number of stiches?

Hmm... I have never seen a spool knitter with more (or less) than 4 pegs, but that certainly doesn't mean it can't be done. When knit (on needles) I-cords are generally between 3-5 sts and I don't see any reason why a spool knitter couldn't be made with 3, 4 or 5 pegs.

You absolutely can. I have seen spool knitters with six or more pegs. Any more than that and you are approaching a knitting loom which uses the exact same method for knitting, but you are creating much larger pieces of fabric (both tubes like the spool knitter) and flat (like back and forth knitting.

No, it doesn't have to be 4 pegs or an even number. I have 2 plastic spool knitters that I purchased at either Joanne's or Michael's (in addition to several of these diy 4-peg wooden spools), both have 2 different peg knitter tops (one is double sided and the other has interchangeable discs, each with different numbers of pegs). All in all I have 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 peg knitters and each produces a slightly different looking cord.
