Spooling a Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight 8000H with 51kg WFT Line

How much 51kg WFT KG Strong Line fits on a Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight 8000H? The key points we try to hit when spooling is have the line as tight as possible (so later a tight drag doesn't cut into the line that's sitting on the spool), and now a bit of electrical tape under the braid to stop slipping.

MorningTide Fishing what kind of knot do you use on your reel
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Hi mate we just use a uni knot with a couple wraps so it's small, not expecting it to hold if got down to that point (would tighten up/grab the spool to try and pop the leader knot if getting so low).

I trained pretty hardcore for about a year and a half, got my blue and then fizzled out (still Psyched on it just need more time!). Cavy's won double gold at a couple comps and should really be close to purple by now but is still white because his attendance! If he did three months solid I think he'd get his blue but he's just got just gota lock into doing it.

Been a fan from the first video. Never commented before. I live in NSW, new to fishing compared to most people...spent 21 hours a week for months fishing after work for my first two jewfish...man id love to just watch how you guys work lures in the water. So much to learn. Learning can never stop, you guys should do a new meet up, definitely would come for tips (and no, not asking the locations you fish) but how to work lures is something id love to learn. :)
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
Man I remember the years I spent cracking the Jewfish code, so many late night fishing and just freezing on the rocks haha. With meet ups and stuff like that we're prolly a ways off getting into that kinda thing, I think we might appear bigger than we actually are at the moment. Like we still all have to work our normal jobs and have sunk in a lot of $ into Morningtide trying to get it off the ground, time is not something we have a lot of juggling work/home/Morningtide. So we're still a couple years away from doing meet ups or taking fans on trips (this is something I want to do once we're big enough, I'm keen on making a series of YT film based around fans along with us). But basically once Morningtide is putting food on the table and we quit our day jobs then you'll start to see us doing cool fan events like meet ups etc. With working lures it matters but it's not everything, like the amount of times I've cast out and a Tuna's just exploded on my lure before I could even flip the bail arm! Or when there's bust ups you just flat out wind straight in and even if the lure's doing cartwheels you'll still hook up haha. I think how you work the lure and it's action plays a major role at times though (like if the fish are super shut down) and with certain lures that are tricky to work, but you can get away with a lot just by throwing a diver haha!

you guys are living the dream. i have never done the kind of fishing yinz get to do and i wish i had the time and money to get into it. i do a lot of bass fishing in the states. i have to ask why you don’t back your braid with a bit of monofilament to keep the braid from slipping? around here, every spool i see that isn’t backed will slip. 100 percent. the tape seems like a good substitute.

@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
I just had the 39kg on there and it was a good balance between good casting and still being able to lock drag if needed. I think the 51kg is more of a psychological step up for the GT because I couldn't snap the 39kg by locking up, 51kg's a fair bit thicker though and maybe if the fish goes into some rock there's a better chance of landing him... But yeah prolly more for my confidence than anything!

Hey boys you know it’s impossible to keep line in a spin reel without twist even if you have the twist free line installation tool or bench and install line side by side with a drill I just put the whole new line spool into a bucket of water get tension on line as I runs through guides and on to reel works pretty good but after a few fish there will be twists it the nature of a spinner so after each trip if you run the bare line out the back of the boat to clear the twist the tension should remove most twist okay bro’s hope this virus hasn’t got y’all down say hi to cav love the content of your vids I should have started a channel twenty years ago and thank you guys for showing me a few tricks we use dogfights here in Martha’s Vineyard and off Provincetown Mass. Briggsy - I'm thinking of spooling my Dogfight with either 51kg WFT, 80 or 100lbs Tasline and Varivas PE10 SMP. How do you compare each line for casting and abrasion resistance? I'm curious how much line you got on the Dogfight with Tasline. Busted Fishing site states that I can get 400m with their PE10 line and 505m with their PE8. These figures contradict what their diameter states,, seeing that the Daiwa JBraid Grand is actually thinner but Daiwa states it fits less line than what Tasline states. I'm ordering by the metre so I need to work out how much line to order to fit 2 spools. Thanks for your help.

Go with your mates so your not alone and only go in tiny conditions. It's pretty dangerous off the rocks so look up and learn all the safety aspects before going, if you can't swim, wear a life jacket. Other than that, much of the same principles apply and if you know how to catch fish out of a boat you'll prolly do well off the rocks! Watch our youtube films on what lure to start out with, look at our "what setup" and "what's in the box" films, and if you dead set want a complete guide to it watch this - www.morningtidefishing.com/collections/apparel/products/pelagic-off-the-rocks-dvd

Yeah i've had it for about a year and a half, Jonny used it on a GT trip out of the boat once and it came back not working at all (something fully snapped), after service (was done free on warranty) it felt nice again but it's been on a few more trips since that and also spun our local zone a fair bit where there's more swell so it gets splashed a lot. Nothing majorly wrong I don't think, just not perfectly smooth like how you'd want it to feel haha.

@tucker_4629

You must be talking about marlin when your talking about the billfish. bc a sailfish is also in the billfish family and no sailfish is gonna strip 500 yards of anything unless its like 10 pound mono. which in kilos that'd be like 5kg line. even a small marlin wouldn't strip out 500 yards of line if they have anything about 50 pound test (above 25ish kg)@@austinprosser4179

Don't mind me asking. Saw a previous video where the expedition 5500H too spooled 500 meters and this reel sized 8000H is roughly within the range too. And if not mistaken its around 50lbs too am i right? There's quite a gap in the model size but they have same line capacity?
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, the PE and lb rating of a line is super confusing because a line can PE5 and break at 50lb or it could break at 30lb or even 80lb+ so it's safer to just look at the PE (thickness) of the line instead of going off the lbs... (the line in this film is 112lb and around PE7-PE8, line in that other film is 50lb-70lb (they call it 50lb but claim it breaks at 70lb+) and about PE3.5)

can you guys explain the logic to put 112lb line on a reel that can only do 66lb drag? woudnt putting 70lb line be more than enough (even still being able to lock the drag) without any worries. great vids btw
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
So there is a few reasons. First is I don't feel as confident with the thinner line, even just in terms of knot strength. Next reason is if you grab the spool (on top of the 66lb drag) that can put a lot more pressure on everything and lastly if I can't control him and the GT goes into the reef/rocks the 51kg is a bit thicker and that added abrasion resistance might save me! But all that said i've locked up on the 39kg WFT and couldn't snap it... So the Psychological aspect is prolly the main thing haha!

MorningTide Fishing how are you guys casting the rapalas so far :(?
@pichum4st3r
@pichum4st3r 6 жыл бұрын
SN1PER It is typically recommended that drag is set at 20-40% of the line strength. It puts less shock on the line and gentler on fish. If your drag is set too close to the line strength then your chances of line breaking and fish spitting out the hook is higher.

When using braid would you use the strongest braid and put less line or use less of a strength braid to add more line on the spool?
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on target fish. If you're going for GT you want at least 100lb line. If you're going for Tuna/Mackerel you want at least 300m of line preferably 500m (could be as light as 10lb I guess but we never fish so light, 30lb is the min we fish for Tuna/Mackerel).

Hi Mate you should contact Dennis Verreet on his facebook fishing page (not only is he German as well haha but he might know the exact amount). If i was to guess it would be about 600m - 700m? WFT in 39kg and 51kg is nice and smooth, i think it's 8 strand but the 32kg and 22kg are 4 strand and pretty rough on your finger, so personally, I way prefer the 39kg and 51kg in WFT.

You can switch it over on most reels but in Australia, we are taught to wind right handed when we're kids, no idea why. Compared to the US we drive on the opposite side of the road over here as well. Maybe it's just if ur in the southern hemisphere everything gets flipped haha.

You guys should give left hand wind a proper try if you're right handed. It will feel weird at first if you've always done it the other way but being able to wind straight out of the cast without swapping the rod to your left hand as well as being able to work lures and pump/ direct fish with your dominant arm is going to make it easier to make the rod and extension of your body rather than a tool. I fucking love this channel btw, just working my way through all your material because it's all amazing. Makes me want to abandon my life in the UK, move to Australia and spin for pelagics off the rocks. Great work guys.

I always switch the handle to the right side on my reels. I'm right-handed and it feels more natural.

I fish spinning reels on the left and baitcasters and spincast reels on the right, me and my friends charted a boat for lake trout and the charter had baitcasters with handles on the left couldn't stand it , it ruined the whole trip for everyone, he said he ordered them on the right side but they sent him on the left, I think he just got a good deal on them, but he should still have some reels on the right especially on baitcasters on spinning reels you can just move the handle from either side can't do that with baitcasters

Try marlin fishing from the rock see if you can catch a 400lb marlin. You definitely have the gear to do it.

no one is catchinh a 400lb marlin from the rocks I doubt you could even do that standing up with a reel it would have to be in a reel holder

People do it with conventional reels from the rocks with nothing more than a fighting belt.

Nice video guys! What do you guys reckon on my next reel; Penn Clash CLA8000 or Shimano Saragosa 10000SW?

If I had to choose right this second I'd go the Saragosa, but I'm not familiar with the Clash so would want to feel both of them first before deciding.

Thanks for the advice. I will get a feel on both reels and then decide I guess.

I get the point why spooling the line tight..but this tight surprised me. maybe this is a stupid question, but if you get no bite and reel in with almost no resistance or drag, the line should require a notably larger volume on the reel as when spooled tight - does it still completely fit on, no problem? Or even when you fight a fish, you reel when pumping down with less resistance..really never spooled one so tight and I don't catch fish the size of yours on spinning tackle. cheers for sharing your experience with this!

You hook a GT with 20kg+ drag and the line's going to cut into itself regardless but the tighter you have it the less it will bite in. It does get laid a bit looser after you cast but it's only that top 60m-80m, the line under is still packed real tight. Whenever I tie a new leader I cut off about 2-3m of braid (down past where your finger touches the line when casting) to get rid of any damaged line and after a few new leaders the looser top section of line from casting compared to spooling fills it up pretty much perfect, before that it may be a bit over full...
