@doctorhydro

Cavy, love your videos man. I need some help deciding between the Saltiga Expedition 5500h and the 8000. I'll be using it mostly for casting stickbaits and poppers when I travel and fish (tarpon, cuda, jacks, some bigger stuff...sharks, grouper, tuna and hopefully some GT's). I know there's a big difference in drag: 15 vs 30 kilo and weight. What would you recommend? is the 8000 that much heavier to cast with than the 5500h?

Hello MTF friends, once again greetings from Peru ... After watching your fun and amused video, I have two matters to put on the table for you, and for your help. My first point, I know Daiwa Saltiga is an extraordinary reel, there are no doubts about it. I have tried a 4500H, and it is an incredible reel, very soft, light, and with a strong dragging, but I haven't bought one yet. Mostly, I practice saltwater fishing from the shores in Peru having the waves up to my waist or chest. The water and sand always attacked and destroyed my Penn and Fin-Nor reels. Given this, three or four years ago I decided to use Van Staal. It is a rough reel, completely sealed, simple and strong mechanism, and its maintenance consists just to rinse the reel with freshwater major part of times, and once a year do a real maintenance. My brother in law has a sport fishing business. He only sales top quality products from Japan, Germany and USA, and he is always offering me to buy a Daiwa Saltiga reel, but I am not completely convinced. Given that you have a very good knowledge with these kind of top quality brands, I would like to know what is your experience using a Daiwa Saltiga. What happened with your Saltiga reels after your fishing trips when you have to sink or wet them into saltwater. Does mag-sealed works as good as Van Staal sealed system? I was thinking that I haven’t noticed/watched in your videos that you were fishing under water+sand conditions like I do. I will appreciate your feedback and tips, before to spend more than US$1000 in a reel. My second question, I want to ask you about to spooling a reel. Have you considered to use a backline instead filling the spool with meters and meters of braided line that you may never use in a catch? Instead to load your spool with 501mt of braided, load some meters of mono??... Normally I use YGK or Daiwa braided lines in my reels, and here, I have to pay around US$50-60 for 150m of 30lb line. I load around 300mt in my spools, and it is a little expensive. In case you do, would you please tell me how do you do? What knots do you use to tie both lines, and what kind of backline you use. Well, thank you in advanced, Antonio
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, I think you should stick with your Van Staal! We never dunk our reels anymore and try to keep them out of the water as much as possible. So for your style I think Van Staal is better for sure. With spooling we will sometimes put electrical tape on the spool, but we don't do mono backing, we just want as much line as possible because every once and a while we do hook a fish that nearly spools us, so the more the better in our eyes!
@antonio999us
@antonio999us 7 жыл бұрын
Hello MTF, thanks a lot for your both answers... now I am convinced to continue using VS reels... in addition, I'm agreed with you about spooling the reels as well. It is better to prevent a big catch which could need lots of meters, than regret for not having enough line.... Thanks!!!

No way 50lbs line break at 78lbs(crazy). You should test it yourself. 50lbs line break around 29 to 38lbs. Only line I know 50lbs power pro zero break at 50lbs.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
The results come from this guy www.paulusjustfishing.com/4linetesting.htm I think he's pretty trustworthy and warns of testing line yourself because if you don't have the machine to hold it properly you can snap it at much lower lb then it actually is. There are a few braids that break way above their name, like 14lb fireline breaks at something like 40lb. I don't think the rating the manufacturer puts on the line is every very accurate, can be way lower or higher than they say.

So based on your other videos you recommend the Saltiga above all your other reels. Have you ever used a Vann Stahl? Not recommended? I haven't used them either I'm just curious as they're very popular.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
Hey bro, we should prolly make a new film about what we think of reels because the Stella's are really awesome as well and we were kinda influenced by a few stories and treated our gear soo poorly back then it wasn't really a fair thing to say (that Stellas are crap haha). We've tried Jonny's 14k Stella a bunch of times and it's as good as the Saltigas just a bit more refined less heavy duty. In terms of Vann Staals we felt one years ago and it was super rough, heavy, slow retrieve speed and just didn't feel nice to spin with. We almost never see them over here in Aus so I can't say what their new reels are like (maybe they're amazing). But for us we need to be absolutely in love with the reel we spin with (because we're spinning like 10 hours a day on trips) and if we don't love it we'll sit down and maybe miss the chance of connecting with fish! So I always say "the best reel is the one you want to spin with all day long" haha. That said the Stella and Saltiga are both ridiculously nice to spin with so I'd be stoked with either, but my personal preference is Saltiga.
@stephensteele4586
@stephensteele4586 7 жыл бұрын
MorningTide Fishing I see.. yea idk much about their older ones but I see a lot of guys around here(Florida) with them and they seem to like them. They say they're smooth and light so maybe they've made improvements. Or MAYBE they can't afford Stella's and Saltiga's lol. Are the saltigas pretty much sealed though? Obviously there will be a time when it ends up getting dunked in the water and it'd be nice if that didn't ruin the rest of the trip.
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
They seem fine for splashes and would prolly be ok if you go under for just a second then rinse it out with fresh water ASAP (would be ok for at least for the rest of that trip), but you wouldn't want to wind it under water or keep it under for more than a few seconds. So they're nowhere near as sealed/tough as a VS but if you're careful with them you only need to service it once a year. There have been some reported problems with the "mag seal" in the new Saltigas (where salt is able to penetrate the magnetic seal they have (which i think is a weird oil the floats like a force field because of tiny magnetic particles in the oil) which sounds fancy but funnily enough seems to be the thing that let them down. A lot of people have turned to Stellas recently because of this but personally, I don't notice much difference. We're hard on both brands and they both end up needing a service about once a year (9-12 months anyway).

MorningTide Fishing awesome. Thanks for the reply! I was conversing with my cousin. We are both avid fishermen and we would love to go fish in remote areas like that some time. You guys ever make it over this way? We shark fish a lot land based and I think itd be a good addition to your channel to try it out!
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
Never fished in the US but Florida looks pretty much like what we have here in terms of species, just with some more abundant and others a bit different (like our GT and your Jacks or your Tarpon and our tiny Tarpon), a big US tarpon is a dream fish of ours! We hook sharks from time to time on lure but it's pretty rare. We're not against C&R shark fishing but are just 100% into lure fishing so it's not too often we get too connect with a shark.

Hi there, i just bought this reel but there is whirring noise when I reel. Is that a problem or it just common thing with this model. I feel a little bit disappointed. Thank you in advance

How do you like the Saltiga? Is it worth the $$? I was thinking of getting one but hesitant because the reel is around a grand...

If you need to ask don't buy it, I'm sure your $100-300 reels will do that job for just about anything but the biggest gt

yeah i was trying to find the old saltiga dorado mo83s but cant find any shops still stocking them the new 2016 equivalent is only 8" .. you rekon the 3" difference matters?
@MorningTideFishing
@MorningTideFishing 7 жыл бұрын
It won't make that much difference as long as the blank is the same... That MO83s is a really nice stick aye, got some hidden power to it that you wouldn't expect from something so light/thin!
