Try separating them into individual words Like Ulaanbaatar (U Laan Baat Ar) or Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (Sri Jaya Warden E Pura Kotte)

Just do it by section. Like learn the middle East by itself and then the Stan's. And then the southeast. And finally all the other ones

By the time I was in 8th grade, I could tell you the population of most of the top 50 largest us cities and some of the top in the world. I also really like drawing my own highways, streets, and cities. I especially like American cities and it’s cool to see another person who studies the globe, and I’m impressed by your work, wish the best of you, geography joe Edit: I also wanted to add that my brain is a little rusty about city populations now that I’m going to be in my senior year of high school next year
