Spore Wars: Return of the Fungi

The earth is a warm nutrient-rich place for the Interplanetary Mycorrhizal Network to locate. Sporeships travel the 16,000 (Earth) year voyage to reach our solar system. The planet is seeded with the hyphae of the Mycorrhizalians. The Earth's biomass is absorbed and turned into fungal matter.
The Mycorrhizal scientists root into the brains of Earth creatures and absorb their memories of experiences, knowledge, science, emotions, and tech knowhow, to be added to their knowledge base containing the intelligence gathered from thousands of pre-fungated planets.
The surviving lifeforms, including a few worn-down humans find ways to survive in their bleak new environment. They learn which fungi are edible and which will kill. They hide in the ruins of their past cities or in caves in moldering forests. Death is the new norm.
