As a student sport pilot, this put me at ease. I didn't realize the oral is basically a conversation about my knowledge of the airplane being used and a brief on the practical flight.

To all those wondering what the Sport Pilot oral and check ride is like, this video is very close if not exactly what you should expect in the oral portion. I do think testing wise, there is probably very little difference between Sport Pilot and Private Pilot (except for the aircraft). I was happy with the level of difficulty because you are talking about practical knowledge - things you really should know. The check ride consisted of planning a cross country and flying a few legs of it (no GPS) using pilotage and a stopwatch to time your arrival at waypoints calculated using your E6-B manual flight computer. Then we did some maneuvers: turns around a point, S turns over a road, slow flight, steep turns, and an emergency decent. Following, we diverted to an airport for some takeoffs and landings: short and soft field landings, short and soft field takeoffs, and forward slip to landing. My examiner had me do this all on a runway with a crosswind, by the way. The oral was about 2 hours and the checkride was 1.7 hours. $450 for the instructor plus $104/hour for the cost of the plane, making a total of $626.80 for the test. It sounds tough, but it's not - especially with the help of this video. What struck me, is that this information and these skills are necessary to planning and flying safely at any level. I also know that when I upgrade to a Private Pilot, it will be a piece of cake as it's basically the same test.

Great video! I'm set to take my Sport Pilot check ride in two weeks and this video definitely helped put me at ease regarding what to expect during the oral. I did catch one mistake thought, SFRA's are actually classified by the AIM as "Other" airspace not "Special Use" and if I'm correct knowing the difference between the two categories is a requirement via the PTS.

Now I just need money 😞. It will happen, I hope to become a CFI then entertain the idea of ATP. Maybe... I’ll be perfectly happy flying various smaller planes.

@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 7 жыл бұрын
Glide ration will change with weight. With more weight, you need more lift, more lift equals more drag, and more drag is less glide ratio. Another thing to think about, best glide speed also increases with weight.

The only differences between Sport Pilot and Private Pilot is 20 more questions on the written test for Private...more questions on VORs on the private. A night dual cross country with ten full stop landings. A longer solo cross country with more stops and longer legs. You must have a 3rd class medical or higher, versus a DL. You need 1 hour under hood for Sport, 3 hours under hood for Private. You can train for either in an LSA. You can checkride for either in an LSA

@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 8 жыл бұрын
It is now referred to as a "chart supplement" as it fills in the blanks the sectional chart leaves out. You can still order the AFD as the green paperback booklets for your region. Soon it will probably only be available digitally through the FAA and on Ipads, etc.
@gbigsangle3044
@gbigsangle3044 7 жыл бұрын
Most don't use paper charts anymore. And for some reason flight schools and flight instructors often still use them. A good EFB is legal and more useful. The sectional in an EFB is the same as the paper one so you need to learn how to read a sectional and later IFR plates if you go for that rating. Airfield AF/Ds are included in these EFBs and you can access them online at www.skyvector.com or other online tools.

The big problem with a Sport Pilot License, as far as I can tell after looking in to it, is that training centers are only in certain limited locations around the country and you can't rent LSAs locally either. So, you'd have to take some accelerated training by going out-of-town for 2 or 3 weeks and then BUY your own LSA. They are probably going to raise the weight limits on LSA soon, so that the Cessna 150/152 and Diamond A20 would qualify, which would be great, IF the rental agencies will honor a Sport Pilot certificate. But, the world being contrary, I suspect rental centers will not do so. Another draw-back is that you can only use Class E and G airports which means you'll have to take additional training to get the endorsement to use B, C, and D airports.

Most people will need the latter to even get off the ground because their local airport (unless they live in the country) will be class D. I have my oral and checkride on Saturday and I'm wondering about submitting a VFR flight plan. It isn't something I've had to do, but it is something that he touched on the questioning. Did you have to just explain the process or did you actually have to do it when you flew? I need to make sure I understand that so I'm not taken by surprise! Also in regards to the Cessna Training Flight Training, they have a requirement of .1 for Actual IMC. The examiner did ask you about that. But, as a Sport Pilot you can't fly in a cloud and I see no published requirement for Actual IMC time, other than this .1 in the Cessna course. Is that something I need to be prepared for or was this an issue in your training? Did you obtain actual IMC time and if so, how?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 8 жыл бұрын
Just explain the process. The DPE won't want you to actually file one for the pretend x country because the cross country portion will be over 15mins into the flight and you'll never get near your destination airport. Just make sure you are familiar with what a flight plan does for you and the difference between flight plan and flight following.

Is there a difference between a DFE and a FAA employee giving the test as far as costs? A DFE can charge what ever they want. An Faa examination have a set price as a government employee. Also have the practical test standards changed now it's spring 2017.Was there a change coming in April or just a rumor ?Where can one get the outline the examiner was using? The video was good ,almost to good, who was holding the que cards? I'd like to see one with a hidden camera.Sorry to take the hard line but one day my and my passengers lifes may depend on it. 90% is what 1 out of 10 times someone can cause an accident!!!!

DPE's set their own price, FSDO inspectors are free as gov employees.

92% on your test. Im disappointed

I got a 92% also. It's kind of a silly exam and doesn't correlate well with practical knowledge. I hacked the test basically, and only got 4 wrong, 2 of which were memorization flubs or lost in translation (7700 vs 7500, wording on VFR corridor speed limit in class B question). I wouldn't put much emphasis on the 100% academic pilot vs a 80-90% practical pilot.

The standard is $500...so that price is a bit higher than average.

If they charge more, but have a cool attitude and are easy to get along with- it's worth it. I've met some grumpy ones that are hard to talk to, ask vague questions and almost WANT to fail someone over something insignificant.

do I have to do an exam to get my ppl? also, what if you can't answer a question? that would be awkward

You'll go through almost the identical oral exam in this video for your PPL, if you can't answer a question it's not the end of the world, you'll get a couple free passes. It is a open book test as well. However, I would encourage you to study as much as possible, check out some of the other videos on this channel as well, so you can answer most questions off of the top of your head like we all try to do (but never actually manage to do).

A written exam is required for all licenses. A checkride is also required which includes an oral portion and a flying portion. The oral portion is not a written test, you are allowed to look up an answer...the assumption is you know where to find the answer in the material. But they don't want you looking up most answers, just a few that stump you. The flying portion has a PTS standard of tolerances you must adhere too....this includes knowledge of preflight, fuel, emergency procedures, soft, short and normal takeoffs/landings, turns, slow flight, stalls and radio skill.

This is ridiculous and long. A sport pilot can fly at night so they're not going to ask you any questions about any optical illusions. He's talking about are airelon and Rudder controls? Good luck getting that question when you're getting your powered parachute Sport cert, This guy would not carry his logbook? But you required to show those endorsements in your log book. Don't waste your time on this crap it's not realistic
@rromanchuk
@rromanchuk 5 жыл бұрын
You realize SPL includes ASEL right? Optical illusions, inadvertent VFR flight into IMC are 100% fair game for a DPE to ask. SPL ASEL student pilots (vh > 87 knots), literally, need instrument time before cross country solo endorsement, it's implied in the FAR: § 61.93 e. Solo cross-country flight requirements 12.) Also, SPL can only fly 10000MSL/2000AGL, yet i still got hypoxia questions on my written. Also, you think a one hour oral is long o_O? If anything, SPL oral is potentially more difficult because it's the entire body of PPL knowledge (minus tracking VOR radials, and upset attitude recovery, but seriously, that's it) + SPL limitations. Any SPL ASEL students (aka you're not flying weight-shift-control aircraft in iowa), you one billion percent should expect that your DPE is going to quiz you on how not to die in your airplane.
