Everyone, check out the documentary on Netflix called "Fastball". Apparently, in today's game, they measure pitch speed 50 ft from home plate but back in Nolan Ryan's day, it was done I think 10 ft in front of home plate. In the documentary, the adjust of this and if Ryan's pitch had been clocked at the same distance as Chapman's 105.1 mph missle, Ryan's would've been about 108.6 mph.

Some of the best handballers in the world (european sport) can shoot a handball up to 130km/h ( 80 mph). Now, the handball is 3 times heavier than baseball, and has about 3-4 times bigger diameter (much greater air resistance). I think these guys can easily throw a baseball 100p mph with very little training.

not really Felix, as a baseball batsman we have a certain area that is based as the hitting zone with the ball coming at you direct so there is less factors to work with(mostly velocity and the swing curves in the air for baseball) where as in cricket, the batsman has to worry about the velocity, the swing in the air when the ball is pitched and the swing / deviation in the ground with when the ball hits the pitch and turns to different angles, plus the condition of that cricket ground pitch ( the bounce and turn factor ) also as a cricket batsman, you have to worry as to whether or not the pitcher is pitching the ball towards your body such as the head by purpose ( which is legal in cricket, to intimidate the batsman). Now you can imagine a 90mph ball which is harder than a baseball, coming directly towards your head, and you have a split sec decision to make whether you are going to move away or hit the ball. I have played both the sports in high competitive level, and to be honest both of them is tough in its own unique way. And to be honest, although there are lots of similarities between the two, there are lots of differences when it comes to the pitching and batting mechanics. Love both Cricket and Baseball.

Any sports or subject would be boring if you don't know what its about. Perhaps if you learn about it and give it a chance you would definitely think otherwise. Check out cricket t20, its 3 hour version with way more action that a normal baseball game. Again I love both sports, and I understand that you may not like cricket, but to "hate" it without knowing what the game is about, or giving it a chance is well . . . . . (insert adjectives).

several sources say Nolan Ryan threw a pitch that was clocked at 108.1 mph. BUT, several different people got several different readings. So, that is why Aroldis Chapman's 105 is the fastest ever, because that was confirmed.

Excuse me, what's with the name calling? Maybe you don't follow the Reds and recall how Chapman went through a wild stretch in 2011 where he couldn't even throw strikes. He was consistenly walking the bases loaded and finally they took him down and worked with him. He hasn't thrown close to 105 since but his control is better. I saw him hit 102 last year on one pitch. He can throw 101 with ease now, which is still damn fast.

And the position of the radar gun back when Nolan Ryan was pitching was set closer to the plate, and the pitch loses velocity over time....if they were to measure the speed at the same distance they are measuring nowadays for guys like Chapman (closer to the mound), Nolan Ryan would clock in at over 105 mph. They can figure this out with basic math based on the speed of Ryan's pitch and the position of the radar, and how much speed is lossed over time etc.

Chapman has not thrown the fastest pitch ever thrown. Radar guns used to measure velocity when the ball was much closer to home plate. After adjusting for the difference in how velocity is now determined, Nolan Ryan has the record at 108. Check out the documentary “Fastball”

He is genetically gifted, if not, everyone would attempt to duplicate his biomechanics and being throwing with similar velocity. Stride length, while it can be increased, will affect other aspects of the delivery, so mess with one thing and others can be impacted, some adversely. Arm speed is largely a genetic gift, as is stride and lower extremity swing speed for a runner. Chapman is a very muscular man, while Randy Johnson was a pure Ectomorph.

Chapman doesn't throw 105 anymore. In 2011 they tweaked his delivery because he was consistently wild. He throws in the high 90s now usually; will hit 100 or 101 from time to time. Still damn near unhittable stuff, especially when he mixes in a slider at 89!

numbers I found are a little different than the video, but if 90 mph = 0.41 seconds to home plate, it takes a hitter about 0.3 seconds from when he starts his swing until he can hit the ball, hence about 0.11s to decide to start his swing, if the pitch is 105mph it gets home in 0.35 seconds, (minus the 0.3 seconds from when he starts his swing) only leaves 0.05s to decide to swing, his reaction time is cut in half.

sorry.. nolan ryan owns the record at 108. The documovie "Fastball" dissects measured speeds from the last, does sciencey stuff and came up with ryan the fastest. It was actually much less or it would stand as the record. They juice the guns by taking the reading at a different point than they used to. When Ryan threw that 100.9 it left his hand at over 108 mph. They figured out by taking Chapman's and other power pitchers' readings out of the hand vs. crossing the plate they could illicit a bigger response from crowds. The fact is, if Aroldis threw this pitch at 106 leaving the hand, he's still slower than the Ryan Express which left the hand at 108 and still had enough gas when it hit the plate to come in over 100 still. Guinness does not count pitch speed as the ball leaves the hand.
