I think its pretty cool that while Ray Allen and Stephen Curry are both incredible shooters, they have quite different mechanics: Ray releases the ball at the apex of his jump, while Curry releases it going up. Both very efficient jumpshots tho ✌
@miyyrret
@miyyrret 10 жыл бұрын
It is interesting to compare this with Stephen Curry's Sport Science. He said 48 degrees is the best shooting angle but Curry releases at 50-55 degrees. So it is interesting what researches support that 48 degrees is the best shooting angle. I doubt he only put data together without any explanation why two different shooting form both can work.
@RayAP17
@RayAP17 9 жыл бұрын
Perhaps because Curry's shorter than Allen. Also, you can be a better shooter than your form and mechanics would imply. Matt Bonner, for example.

steph curry shoots at a higher angle cause he doesn't jump to his peak, he hops his shot which i find disturbing... (i hate curry's shooting form) :L in the end it gets him baskets so it's what works for him i guess...

The definition of power I'm using is weight/speed=power. Look into the mechanics of the golf swing, obviously golfers want to be strong but they will tell you that technique is so much more important to create power. Similarly with basketball, we want to perfect our technique so that there is no loss of energy throughout the movement. In fact a perfect basketball shot will accumulate energy all the way through the movement and reach it peak velocity at the zenith of the shot. CONTINUED ABOVE.

Let's say Ray Allen is 45% and NBA average is 30% Ray Allen is 50% better than the NBA average because 50% of 30(NBA avg) is 15% and 15 + 30 is 45% Or in math terms, 45/30 = 1.5 -1 = 50%

If the ball is shot with less spin it will go faster in the air, and it'll drop further and if it hits the rim, the ball will bounce out. When the ball is shot with backspin, it will go slower in the air and the drops closer, so a well calculated shot will go in the basket.

A shot from parallel to the rim would not be on the shortest path. That's not what makes it easier to make baskets the higher you shoot. Shooters put an arc on the ball, so if they go closer to the rim on release point, they would only be arcing it higher than the rim, making it a farther distance. What makes it better to release from higher, as well as have a higher arc, is that the rim becomes less of an oval shape and more round when the ball is falling, increasing the relative size of it.
@TheChanceMaster

Yes Joe, you have a larger margin of error when you shoot from a closer position. That means you can make slightly larger errors in your shot angles and get away with them moreso than when you're further away. In space travel, calculations and launch angles have to be near perfect because their margins for error are ridiculously small. Same concept.
@icmull
@icmull 12 жыл бұрын
Yes. I am sure you have noticed the closer to the hoop you are the easier it is. Well by getting high he reduces the angle simultaneously reducing distance. Less distance means easier. A larger margin of error means he can make more mistakes and still get in, albeit those mistakes are so slight only he might notice.

it's easy to make that mistake, but it actually is preferable to have a LARGER margin of error. The larger your margin of error, the more room you have for "mistakes" [ie; poor back spin, adjustments for on coming defenders].
@MrYBI3
@MrYBI3 11 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Three-point shooting isn't so much about power as it is about form. The further one gets from the basket, the more power that is needed, but not that close from the rim (from the 3-point line). And it doesn't exactly work the way you are describing about taller shooters. It isn't, "if you are taller, you shoot better". You can be any height, but as long as you jump where the ball is parallel to the rim, you have the best chance of making it in.

@Pivot1king He says that all the time when people say he has a god-given talent. He's like, "no, you know how much I work on this?" Before every game he gets there like 4 hours early and shoots hundreds of shots. Every game. I agree. I like how he phrased it, "God doesn't care whether or not I can shot a jump shot." He's got great work ethic. And he's kind of OCD. Give it up to the 3 pt king!

larger margin of error. he could be off by an inch to the right and still make the shot. that's what it mean't. the angle makes the shot more accurate as the rim IS parallel to the ground. you don't have to shoot straight to the rim, you shoot through the rim.
@MrYBI3
@MrYBI3 11 жыл бұрын
OK, fine. I agree with your first point. But explain to me what power has to do with making shots? Its not as if the more powerful one is, or the more power you generate can you then make in more shots consistently. It's not that the number of basketballs that are put through the rim correlates *exponentially* with power. From a physical standpoint, shooting has to do with form, movement of oneself and the ball, and the atmospheric pressure at which one is shooting the ball.

Sure, a guy could be way more powerful when they measure his bench press or punch. But this doesn’t translate well if you are not shooting correctly. This is obvious if you were to shoot with your legs straight, you lose a ton of power. Now once you’re shot is extremely efficient and stable, then all you’ve really got to estimate is the distance of the shot.

@SlingShotEllington45 That's Simple Math 39 = 100 % of the average. 41 % of 39 = 15,99 In this case are the " 100 % " u got to deal with. So you have to add the 39 + 15,99 => 55 %.

I don't get how having the shortest distance between the ball and basket makes a larger margin of error. Does that mean that Allen gives himself a larger margin of error every time he jumps and shoots the ball?
@kaikaichen
@kaikaichen 13 жыл бұрын
@Madfrogz Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Is Sports Science implying that 2 rotations per second is optimal? Because some other good shooters (Peja Stojakovic comes to mind) put A LOT more backspin on the ball than Allen.

@nooobiechild they didn't base their ability on the 3 pt contest, ray might have a 36% 3 pt percentage during that season but the rate where he shot those threes is what they gave him, paul pierce made his shots at a much higher percentage and at almost the same rate as ray's 3 pt attempts

When it comes to releasing the ball at the top of your jump...This is incorrect. As soon as you leave the air, you are slowing down, the power-chain is not focused not only on your shot, but also on your jump. If you release the ball just after you leave the ground then you will have put all the power created in your jump into powering the ball into the air. Think about it. Wouldn't higher jumpers or taller people be better shooters? Wouldn't a good tip for shooting better be jumping higher? No

The koala bear is found in coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia, from Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula. Populations also extend for considerable distances inland in regions with enough moisture to support suitable woodlands. The koalas of South Australia were largely exterminated during the early part of the 20th century, but the state has since been repopulated with Victorian stock.
