This was all the affirmation I needed to stay the course with DIY hydration and fuel mix. I scored a free box of LMNT and while I enjoyed it, you point out all the things I’ve been hesitant with it about ie. gut agreement, Stevia, etc. Thanks for this! 🤙🏼

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad we could help. There's no harm trying things every now and then (especially if you get a free box), but sticking to simple, DIY options is probably the best option.

I use the Mango Chili as a pallet buster. It does a great job of clearing out the lingering sweet. While they say 500ml per packet, I do 750ml, but Skratch is my primary (cucumber lime) so LMNT in the pallet buster role is great for me. As with 99% of the pre-packaged stuff, it's the convenience of the packaging that is tough to beat.

Yes - convenience and an occasional different taste profile can definitely be useful. We're not against using products where you can make them work for you which is why we try to suggest options for additions or adjustments.

Bought lemon juice from costco, 100 packets of sucralose from Aldi. 1T lemon juice, 1g salt, 1 g sucralose and end up with a LMNT clone for five cents a bottle.

Y’all did choose the worst flavors to try lol Conventional flavors are much better. I do agree from experience that drinking a full packet while working out really upsets the gut. Had to stop using them for some of my long runs.

They're ok outside of sport and I kind of liked trying something different on the flavors, but I wouldn't buy them again.

For every day life, it can be a good option to support hydration (and during fasting too). We don't recommend it for sport though.

I mostly make speed nectar with a bit of lemon juice, but sometimes I take it on the bike for a treat, I tolerate it well at the recommendations that Saturday gives me (salty sweater here!). But yeah it's obscenely expensive for flavoured salt 😂
@Saturday_ProFuel
@Saturday_ProFuel 4 күн бұрын
I love Speed Nectar, but also need a little treat somewhere in the plan. That might be in a longer session or even during a block where I'm fueling every day. If the treat is a little expensive, that makes me enjoy it even more! Fortunately, the cost savings from using Speed Nectar means a few little treats are easy to include in the plan.

Would you guys consider doing a video on fueling and hydration for other sports. Beach volleyball (or other outdoor activities) really dehydrate the player and requires a lot of short 10-20 second max output efforts over 30-90 minutes. How does one approach fueling conservatively without underdosing too much? Thanks.
@Saturday_ProFuel
@Saturday_ProFuel 13 күн бұрын
For an activity like that, we recommend considering the overall, average intensity of the 30-90' and then fueling for that. So it is more likely to be a moderate or tempo type of effort if you're using the Saturday app. Then we'd recommend choosing an activity type (in the app) where the body position is vertical like running or cross-country skiing. The biggest impact on your nutrition is probably the conditions and how hot it on the day which will change the sodium and water recommendations.

I bought some after watching a video of a Crohn's patient try some for every day hydration. I find it way too salty for the amount of water they suggest. I ended up putting one packet of the watermelon one into a pitcher of water instead.
@Saturday_ProFuel

Yes, it is really salty! Finding the right concentration that works for you is important and if you're not a salty sweater, and you're using it outside of exercise, then diluting it makes perfect sense.

If I were to make my own mix should I go 50/50 with citrate and chloride or just 100% citrate?
@Saturday_ProFuel
@Saturday_ProFuel 16 күн бұрын
You could go 100% sodium citrate and lots of athletes do. We usually recommend starting with table salt because it's cheap and readily available and then cutting that with sodium citrate if there are any gut issues, but you could go straight to sodium citrate if you've already got it.
@ethancarrigan

@Saturday_ProFuel I ordered sodium citrate but when it arrived I noticed it was sodium citrate dihydrate. Is it the same thing or do I need to mix more than a tsp to = 1000 mg sodium?

Can you guys just make the supplement? Please. You could use the tear away paper packets. I know that it’s super cheap and we can do it on our own BUT packets on the go are super useful.

That might be antithetical to everything we've shared so far! That being said, we understand the importance of convenience which is why we keep looking and trying different products. We'll think about it...

The naked and chocolate salt are the worst... LOL... the rest are pretty good. One per bottle is too much for me and I split it between two bottles.

It must be as a binding agent or something like that. For carbs and for sweetness that amount will not be noticeable.

I make my own hydration mix and my own energy mix. Which one, if any, goes in my bottles depends on the type of ride I'm doing. If it comes up in conversations I tell people my recipes and how cheap it is to make.... and then they immediately ask which name brand they should buy 😂
@Saturday_ProFuel
@Saturday_ProFuel 16 күн бұрын
Hahaha - what brand sugar and table salt do you use?! I'm not sure I even know, I just use what's at home.
@jasonhurst2491

@Saturday_ProFuel I also use whatever is in the cupboard. Sugar is cane sugar. Prefer caster sugar to regular table sugar as the granules are much smaller, but otherwise it's the same. It mixes more easily in the bottle. No need to boil the water and cool it again. Salt is iodised table salt (sea salt). For this morning's 130km ride I had two 750ml bottles with about 1/3 coconut water for taste and potassium, 100g sugar and approx 500mg (1/4 teaspoon) table salt. Then fill with water. Also a camelback bladder with 1 litre of plain water to rinse my teeth between sips. For an event like a competitive Gran Fondo where I might not want to wrangle solid foods while riding in a hectic bunch I might double the sugar and salt to keep the taste balanced. Then add 50g of powdered coconut milk for more energy, yummy taste and some texture. I don't have issues with a high sugar content, but I imagine the coconut milk may help with gut issues for some people who do struggle with high carb drink mixes. I also have my camelback (slim/aero backpack, but can carry 2 litres) so I don't have to grab more fuilds during the ride unless it's crazy hot. Yeah, the fats probably do slow down the absorption of the carbs from the sugar, but I'm nowhere near the pointy end of the event so consistency of performance is far more important to me. From memory the fat in coconut milk is about 50% MCT which is absorbed faster than saturated fats so it makes a reasonable multi-layer energy drink. I can always grab a coke from an aid station if I've dug too deep. When I use solid food it's Aldi Fruity Bars (26g carbs ber bar and little fat) and Woolworths (one of our big supermarkets in Aus) Fruit Sticks (16g carbs per stick and basically fruit flavoured sugar). Dirt cheap, high carb per serve and I find them easy to consume while riding. I never waste money on 'branded' energy or hydration.

Yeah, those flavors are terrible. The OG flavors, Raspberry, Orange, Lemon-Lime, Grapefruit are way better.

Agreed that LMNT is overpriced packaging, marketing, and salt. I also dislike stevia extract. Water and sodium citrate for the win!
