Probably the first sporterised 91/30 I've seen that doesn't make my blood boil - not only that but it looks pretty sharp, too. Nicely done, and I'm glad there are still people out there who can do these things properly.

Customizing a $100 surplus rifle is a blast. I've got less than $350 in mine, and it's as unique as they get. Was apprehensive when I started the project, but everything turned out nicely. It shoots far better than my expectations,with a less than perfect bore - had to do a lot of polishing to get it in good shape. With certain hunting ammo, this custom 91-30 shoots MOA or better. With surplus ammo, 2-3" @ 100yds. I wouldn't part with my 91-30 - 1 of a kind Mosin customized by me:)

Sporterizing a Mosin is a project made to be fun, but you'll never turn one into a benchrest rifle. Ever. People have been trying to build Mauser 98's, 1903's, & Eddystones for at least the last 50yrs. trying to wring as much as they possibly can out of them, and while they are capable of extremely fine accuracy, even they cannot touch a modern rifle when it comes down to sheer mechanical consistency. The Mosins are a lesser rifle than any of the above. Great job iraqveteran! Looks good!

The Barnaul 203gr. SPBT shoots excellent out of my old 1933 Mosin, it is the best shooting round for those old girls :)

This was a awesome video series. You guys do good work. I just found a place online were I can get Mosin for 100.00. They are suppose to be arsenal refinished. And you can pay $10 more to get a hand picked one that has a better looking bore and crown. Will be calling them Monday. Great project, you guys taught me a lot about this rifle. Two thumbs way up!! It looks great! Did you have trouble with ejecting the spent casings? Or was that a product of you being gentle with the bolt rather than the bolt itself? I'm pretty jealous of how your mosin looks, but to be honest I kind of enjoy the character that mine has developed over the years of me shooting it. I'd consider doing this to a freshly bought rifle, but not my Sophe. Great vids brother.

I agree completely. At my local range I've seen some pretty rare and interesting stuff (like a suppressed M24 sniper rifle) but custom rifles always are the most attention getting.

That was my guess too, but still, brass polishes up. It detracts from the effect if you dont let the ejector work the way its supposed to.

This is such a gorgeous rifle. I would love to own this one. But really my non-accurized scout rifle with the original stock and a Brass Stacker mount (and soon-to-be, a Smith brass-bead front sight) does everything I need it to do.

Haha i'd seen some videos of DIY shims of cork, and I thought for a second about doing that myself because I have some cork that would be perfect for that too. But I have one major question on that: how much does it change your point of impact? I'd be afraid of turning my Mosin into an uncontrollable anti-aircraft gun. So is it really that bad? Or is it within the range of the Smith front sight's adjustment? Or more importantly, my Leupold scout scope.

I wish I was having as much fun... The only weak point in the fun I'm having is trigger time. Instead I have to watch IV8888 and the others have all the fun... I get to pop off some rounds about once every 6 months. If I'm lucky. And that's a really good point on the hand guards. I've always wanted to shave some off of especially the bottom one. The top one is so fragile that I'm pretty afraid to but I don't see harm in doing the bottom one. At very least, like you said, smoothing it up so individual grains can't cause pressure points. and YEP, you're certainly right about the shims. It would be easy to simply take them off. I guess I'll have to throw some into my order when I get my post. As far as the scout mount, you'll love every bit of it. Very solid, very reversible if you don't like it, and you can easily use your irons. It sets your cheek just as high as a PU scope would.

Nice job with the rifle. If I understand right it is not the standard trigger, and that was my biggest gripe about the Mosin, other than that I like the rifle. This sporterized rifle here looks great, and seems to shoot quite well too, kinda makes ya' give some respect to the Soviet snipers doing what they did with what they had.

Can you install a rock solid scope mount on your Mosin after you realize you don't like the ATI scope mount that you've already installed?

+Tony Kovatto (tk1776) yes the holes you drilled on the top of the receiver will match a rock solid mount, and depending on the mount you will need to drill and tap another hole on your reciever

yea dude they are great rifles, i have refinished the stock on mine where it looks nice and glossy and ive setup a 2x20 scout scope which is very very fun to use when shooting. just be sure if your gunna get a scout scope mount, go with the"Brassstacker" scout mount, just due to its high quality machining and no mods to the rifle itself

Yeah, though you can't reload a PU-Scoped Mosin with strippers unless it's the early models that have an offset scope, as its too close to the receiver to fit a clip in. If you don't mind a higher scope, using some heightened rings (maybe a 1"-2" pair) will allow you to use strippers. I'm working on an external box magazine addon for the Nagant's, trying to use the same mag housing, but I might have to make a new one.

He's not extracting the casings by hand, he's just extracting them very slowly into his hand so the extractor doesn't kick them out into the field. When brass gets kicked onto the ground it can get damaged, and he probably reloads his brass so that's why he's taking care of it.

Great looking rifle! I have been looking to buy a Mosin and hunt with it, but yours is freaking sick! I don't blame you for wanting to sporterize it either, because ballistically the cartridge is pretty darn versatile and can down any game, shy of grizzly, in North America. In short, I want one! ;)

Funny... Eddystone was originally a railway company. Remington OPENED it, but did not explicitly own it. Baldwin management did. Eddystone receivers were not double heat treated. They were heated to critical, quenched, and then draw tempered. M1903's were double-heat treat; albeit a very rare run of them, as they were only the low SN Springfields. The barrels being torqued on as tightly as they are, did not in any way crack the receivers. It is improper removal that does it.

ever heard of a country called finland? they had several mosin "concept" rifles used in competition shooting. 30-06 has just slightly superior ballistics to 7.62r but @ the cost of a much longer action. Mosin has an action that feels like a .308 especially if you relocate the bolt handle and notch out the receiver. and if there was a major event the first rifle I'd grab would be a practical rifle: easy to shoot and maintain, common ammo, and has good ballistic potential.

At first I did not like the way you butcherd that nice military Mosin. But now I must congratulate you on a job well done and a great looking rifle. In Norway we do not see many Mosin Nagants at the range. I have never fired or held one. Here we have the Mauser 98 and it is has the same price as the Mosin in the US.

@shawnmohr1989 I could be wrong but from the trigger pull and the way it reacted I'd venture to say it's probably the stock trigger assembly. You can file them down to reduce the weight at a cost of reliability...but honestly all it takes is some skill to work the triggers. So long as they're not grainy or too loose all you have to do is squeeze it slow...which can be rough on people use to super light, refined competition type setups.

think the bolt has to go all the way backwards, travelling at more than a certain speed, to auto-eject, and the scope eyepiece is slightly in the way, which makes it hard to make that happen without practise.

I have a 1903 sporterized by Golden Arms Santa Fe division. It was my first rifle and I will never part with it. Keep up the good work fellow combat vet.

i fire brown bear 174gr fmj rounds alot, and i get excellent results. would you say the 203gr softpoints are just as accurate through a full length m91/30

The recoil is pretty bad for a light weight person, especially when standing up. But is it physically possible to thread the barrel on a mosin nagant?

Actually, with the Rock-Steady mount you can load it with strippers, assuming you have proper height scope rings
