It’s not as easy as just calling off the race when it’s almost over. Most of the athletes will take a month long break before ramping up their training for their next professional marathon a few months later. The marathon takes a lot from you and it would probably be bad for the athletes to go again so soon. Not to mention, the results could be far different the second time around depending on who destroyed themselves over the first 20 miles the most.

I recall watching it on the day and as a kid could not understand how he dealt with losing out on a gold medal for his county, but still celebrated more than every other athlete. He was wronged and deprived of a once in a lifetime opportunity, but immediately seemed to deal with it so graciously and magnanimously. I recall feeling gutted and angry for him as a sports fan.
