On July 12, 1996, the UFC 10 tournament took place, where, according to the traditional Olympic system, 8 fighters fought for victory. At the time, fans were mostly into the tournament style, as it was thought to add an element of stamina to the fighters. The event was broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States and was later released on VHS. Then the legendary Bruce Buffer, who is still an indispensable UFC ring announcer, announced the fights in the octagon for the first time. But there is another fact that has become important for the history of the development of mixed martial arts. This is the debut at this tournament of the talented American wrestler Mark Coleman, who is considered the founder and pioneer of the "ground and pound" strategy. This style of ground control has been, is, and will be used by all successful mixed martial arts fighters.

I am pretty sure Coleman did what he did because of Dan Severn and Don Frye's success. I certainly think of Severn and Frye as way more famous. They were in the original UFC shows with no rules, no weight classes, no rounds... Coleman was great like many great MMA fighters before and after, but he does not stick out as different or special at all to me since he just did what Severn and Frye used to do but maybe a bit more mixed. EDIT: I was thinking of Dan Severn when talking about Frye, then my memory came back...

I remember being 19 or 20 and wanting to sign up at a college sport bar down the street from where I lived. I wasn't allowed to enter the tournament because I wasn't a black belt in anything. They wanted karate black belts or Kung Fu black sashes and Brazilian Jiujitsu which was new at the time and boxers who had some amateur fights or golden gloves or pro and I didn't have that. What I did have was training just to train and I followed the Bruce Lee way even before I knew who he was. I wanted to learn everything and anything. I would wrestle my cousin who went to state and handle him easily and I was 5'8" and 155 lbs. I had over 100 fights on the streets beating high school kids when I was 11 and by 16, I was fighting grown ups and laying them out so I knew how to fight and I didn't think I would win the tournament but I was looking to get notice because I was poor at the time and needed a job. I moved away from doing that when I had a work accident that kept me out of that and a 75th Ranger contract in the Army. Damn! Life sucks and then we die but I got saved by Jesus Christ and that's the most successful thing a person could do in life and I accomplished that. Good day!

Yes and Maurice Smith was the FIRST true world class striker and beat him after 3 months of counter grappling with Frank Shamrock. If Maurice could of shin Kicked Coleman as he got up Coleman would of gone to Hospital with a full shin kick to his face. Colemen kept putting a Hand on the floor which negated Thai Kicks to the head of a floored fighter. Frank and Maurice and Vitor Don Frye and Randy were the first real strikers. This fight was so painful to watch, Don Frye is my all time favorite fighter. I was lucky enough to lose at poker against him, hell of a guy. I was sad and a little angry over this one for a long time and I always said it took 100% of Mark to beat 20% of Frye, and then Pride happen. Damn it!!! If memory serves me right, I believe Frye suffered a leg injury before the fight (in the previous fight the same night) and opted to bow out, but they offered him an added extra few grand to fight in the finals against Colemen. Fyre was worried that his speed and mobility would be hampered, but still went for it. Frye was the toughest SOB in those early UFCs.

@@misterrr7nope that wasn't ground and pound by design. that was just knocking him out with elbows by luck. ground and pound is where you PLAN to methodically wear your opponent down with strikes over a period of time. Poerdel just happened to knock out weit with elbow strikes. HE DIDN'T PLAN IT BEFORE THE FIGHT. shamrock PLANNED it before he fought royce so that means he invented it. amen

I remember watching Coleman being taken apart by a kick boxer named Maurice Smith. Chopped him down until he quit. Coleman never had stamina or any BJJ so we knew his time on top was limited.

I would hardly say Coleman "destroyed" Don Frye he won the fight but did no real damage and that was only because Frye had two long and very tuff opponents earlier in the night while Coleman had two short easy fights. If Frye was as rested as Coleman he would have won the fight.

Don Frye would probably have won this matchup had he had a chance to rest up after his previous fight. Coleman's techique was quite limited - take-down, ground and pound, occasionally some reasonable punches, but that was pretty much his entire repetoire. And he was at his peak here.

Just my opinion but I still to this day feel that Frye did NOT take Coleman seriously in their first fight. Overconfidence; after all, Frye was the Champ, Coleman was the newcomer (albeit an OLYMPIAN newcomer). And as the commentator said, Frye did not use (or did know how to execute) submission holds. The next UFC tournament, you could see a change in Frye’s fighting style, where he DID start to use submissions (ankle locks, and the rear naked choke on Tank).

Got to meet Mark Coleman (he was attending a Ohio State dual meet after he graduated and I was working the concession stand for beer money lol). The most humble dude. Seemed surprised anyone recognized him even though he's a legend in Columbus.
