Great video. I did want to add a little bit to the European/Soccer ownership section though. There were/are plenty of bad owners before and after Hicks at various levels of the game and the video is correct that the only saving grace of the English system is the tradition/fan accountability and the pro/rel system. Otherwise it would look much the same as it does in America. But even those factors don't stop clubs from relocating (Wimbledon -> Milton Keynes), bankrupting themselves (too many to list, but most recently/notably Derby), becoming entirely insolvant (Bury, R.I.P.), or just tumbling down the pyramid to obsurity (Oldham). You could argue this is marginally better than the franchising model cause at least the owners are punished in addition to the fans, but the fans are still punished nontheless. From my understanding (as an American myself), many fans of English and I'd assume other European clubs, would be most in favor of adopting the German 50+1 model: a model similar to the Packers, where fans are legally required to own 51% of a clubs shares. I was disappointed that this model wasn't discussed during the video as its by far the most notable example of an entire league adopting the so called "golden ticket." Of course even this system has become bastardized with Hoffenheim and Red Bull Leipzig garnering exceptions, but I'd much rather see a system where single entity owners are the exception and not the other way around. As a recommendation, HITC Sevens here on YT has plenty of videos about disasterous ownerships all across European soccer and is also a champion of the 50+1 model if anyone would like to learn more.

There was an English football club that did manage to did end up moving to a different town after they couldn't get a stadium upgrade: Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes and became the MK Dons. Twenty years on, they're one of the most hated teams in the entire country.
@NickTheHumanBurrito4 күн бұрын
to add to this, AFC Wimbledon, a majority fan-owned club (and partially owned by author, youtuber, and Liverpool fan John Green who has a stand named after him for his contributions to the team) was created and started in the bottom tier of english football (we're talking 12 promotions to the premier league). they now play in the same league as MK Dons, refuse to call them the Dons since this was the only part of Wimbledon FC they actually kept and only called them "Milton Keyens" or "MK", and actually got the history of Wimbledon FC back from them. the ultimate fuck you to a selfish owner who ran away and a team stolen from them for profit

I found your channel recently, perfectly timed as I've been making an effort to get back into following sports. Your video about the Iron Bowl was fun, and reminded me of things that I loved about college football. On the other hand, this video reminded me of why I became so jaded about pro sports. Living in Atlanta I've witnessed both the Thrashers and Braves leaving the city, as well as the Falcons getting taxpayer money to pay for their new home while the Georgia Dome was perfectly functional. Hearing you echo a lot of my distaste regarding ownership and the way that our leagues function to prop up millionaires made me happy to know I'm not alone in feeling the way that I do. I think your monopoly board presentation for this subject was a great idea that was well executed, and I look forward to seeing how you go about these things in the future. I'll be rewatching this one in the meantime.

Something you left out about the Colts moving to Indy overnight is that it wasn't really because of a new stadium. Eventually that may have led to a move, but the reason it happened overnight is that the city of Baltimore was literally trying to pass a law to seize ownership of the team, so Robert Irsay was basically given two options: move it or lose it.

I think german soccer does a good job with their ownership structures. Bundesliga teams, or any other teams in the german football pyramid as far as I know, are required to have at least 51% fan ownership. One person or entity cannot own the majority of a team. I believe fans give their share by basically becoming members of the team. Imagine a Costco membership, but for BVB or Bayern or whatever team you want to root for. At least that's how I understand it. I could be totally wrong.

I know a lot of times I’ll wait until the second video I see to subscribe if I recognize the creator. A few easy things you can do to make your brand easier to recall are just mentioning the name of your channel at the beginning of the vid, or better yet adding a simple theme to your thumbnails (even like a mildly unique border works well).

Hey Hydn, great video, just wanted to relate something to the Green Bay Packers and their fan ownership! In the German professional football (soccer) league, almost all of the teams are majority owned by their fans in something referred to as the 50 +1 rule, whereby fans must own 50% of the club plus one more vote, ensuring that if all the fans are in agreeance over a major decision, they will win a vote. Only two clubs in the entirety of the league are not like this, Bayer Leverkusen and Vfl Wolfsburg who have been privately owned since before the implementation of this rule! While most prominent in the German League (to my knowledge), this kind of ownership is popular across football leagues, (besides the English ig). Probably the two most famous clubs in the world, Real Madrid and Barcelona are operated similarly. Like the Green Bay Packers, fans buy bonds in the club and then will vote for a chairman/president to be the 'owner/runner' of the club, he is the one who makes decisions. These owners are often very wealthy and can bring in their own influence into the club, and fund the club, like current Real Madrid Chairman Florentino Perez, who is a real estate magnate who has been voted as the chairman for 5 (?) separate terms thanks to his success in the position. Really enjoyable watch, just wanted to shed some light on alternative ownerships in other major football leagues in Europe!

For those wondering, relocations have happened in English football, but they are extremely rare and extremely unpopular. Look up the story of Wimbledon FC, their relocation to Milton Keynes and being renamed Milton Keynes Dons FC in 2003, and the Wimbledon fans effort to make their new team, AFC Wimbledon (who now play at the same level as Milton Keynes after many promotions within the English football league pyramid), which is similarly community-owned like the Green Bay Packers.

The ownership models in European clubs and their changes in their last 25-30 years is really a case on its own. The socios model, the 50+1 rule, the bankruptcy and disbandment of clubs, the ones "owned" by governments or armed forces, the corporate groups buying clubs all over, and in the last 5 years the conflict of interest when someone owns more than one club. And their attempt at a cartel league: The SUPERLEAGUE. It's a whole bag of marbles.

The only exception at 5:35 that I defend is Lambeau, as the Packers are public traded and non-profit, many of which are Green Bay residents. Technically, it’s “taxpayer funded,” but the taxpayers ARE also “stockholders.” Not surprised to see the Bears high on that list. For being such a dumpy, outdated stadium, the McCaskey’s sure sucked up a lot of Chicago’s money.
