Our head sea fishing guide Paul Stevens has been hosting and guiding trips to Norway for many years and has an enviable list of PBs to his name, including some monstrous Halibut to over 400lb.
In this video, on a recent trip to Å on the Lofoten Islands in Norway, he talks us through his way of targeting these giant flatfish and even lands a nice fish for the camera.

Do you keep 450 Gram weight always in the bottom or do you lift it up 1-2 meters above ?

Hello, I always try and keep the lead as close to the bottom, however, you have to remember the length of your hook link. Let's say your hook length is 6ft, then you have to make sure your lead is 6-7ft from the bottom otherwise your bait will be dragging the bottom. This seems to work best for the big fish. If you are just after catching any halibut that swims then you can take the lead up far from the bottom. You will be surprised on how far above the bottom you can fish your bait, but really only seems to work well for smaller fish. Hope that helps

wouldn't it be more efficent to have a strike hook on the back of the pollock?

hello, yes and no. Lots of people now prefer to catch and release and with an assist hook at the end of the fish, it tends to deep hook the Halibut making it sometimes impossible to release the fish. With a single circle 99% of the time it is very easy to unhook the Halibut.

That way of attaching the rings to the rod is pure BS since all rods have a back wich is stronger, it's just to make more money selling those rods with the off mounted rings and have nothing to do with the claim of putting the pressure more evenly throuout the rod. All it effectively does is make the rod weaker...
