Excellent video. I follow CFL and Rugby Union, but also enjoy the other forms of the sport. I've always been fascinated by the threads of similarities between them (especially the contact versions) and the gradual tweeking of the rules that ultimately created the games we have today.

Thank you so very much for the kind comment. Funny enough, I'm nearly the same. I've been following NFL and CFL for most of my life, having grown up in Michigan close to the Canadian border. In my early 20s I discovered both Rugby Union and Aussie rules. I was hooked. I would read as much as I could get my hands on about the early years of football. The slow evolution to what we have today has been one of my fascinations for a while now.

Great video, thank you. I'm so glad you spoke about Gaelic Football. I was afraid it wouldn't get a mention. 😊

Gaelic football is criminally overlooked globally. I had discovered it by accident when I was watching Australian football and they started talking about an upcoming Australian Ireland international match. It quickly sucked me in. Now, I have a subscription to GAAGO so I can watch it and hurling when I want.

@@DougsShack😂 Far out! I know irish people who refuse to get that sub as they think the GAA is selling out. Im not a big Gaelic Football fan but just love hurling but it deffo a sport that you need to be playing from birth .... i think if they could freeze a huge GAA pitch and write rules for Ice Hurling there would be no need for any other sport to exist 😂

@@daithipol ahh, makes sense. Unfortunately, it's the only way to watch any of this over here. Ice hurling would be incredible!

Football came from villages trying to get a Ball to the next village church and went on for days and we're extremely violent

You can still find villages in some places that still play mob football. It is a beautiful chaotic mess.

As a Rugby fan it is a pity the GAA didnt just go with Rugby and Hurling rather than invent Gaelic Football. Ireland would never lose a match. I also heard that there was a football ish game in Georgia that involved violence and a ball... the problem was no other countries played so the georgians saw that there were similarities with their gsme and Rubgy so the georgians decided to move their game to Rugby and they are becoming an upcoming rugby nation.

Lelo burti! Yes, it's roots are in old mob football. There are some great videos where villagers still play the old style mass games.

Thank you much! I wrote this over the holidays and was hoping it didn't sound like a bunch of ramblings.

It's called football because its played with the feet. Goalkeeper allowed to use his hands

Its called soccer as an abbreviation of Assocation Football. Rugby Football was abbreviated to Rugger (a name as a rugby fan i do dislike 😊)

This was more a rough overview of the creation of each code of football (assoc, Aussie, etc.). I have thought about diving into historical details, maybe in a per decade format.

@@DougsShack But leagues are the basis for most modern sport not just football based. We do get overlooked in England so it's no slight just as a Villa fan myself it's a bit personal lol Great video though comment was made pre viewed. Just another note I was at christening couple of weeks back at the actual ground where the ball was picked up to create Rugby.

@@linky8899 If I can get myself to England someday, I will be taking a self guided football tour. I can't imagine how anyone could overlook England. It's where it was all born. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me, though. There is a lot of ignorance when it comes to the history of these sports. Especially over here.
