I knew that the market was down because there were a good dozen guys (like yourself) who did videos that were like "I bought this card for $30, got it graded and got $125 for it!" and those guys have stopped making those videos or disappeared for good. Too much product, too much grading, too many people trying to make money (and losing), inflation are a few reasons just to name a few reasons.

Oddly enough this is still my best year but to say that things haven't gotten more competitive is an understatement. And at this point, it was fun doing this in 2018 when nobody cared about cards. Now that everybody and their mother is trying to grade, I'm giving away a lot of valuable information for essentially free by posting mail days, what I buy/grade, etc. The opportunities have dwindled as the market has crashed but they are still out there.

Looking at the average sale price might be a bit misleading. It's possible in the current market high end cards just aren't selling, and more people are buying his lower end cards and/or people who couldn't afford his lower end cards are now able to buy them.

Happy Holidays Fellow Cardboard Sellers, Hoarders, Collectors, Enthusiasts, & Coneseurs! I just started selling this past June solely bought & sold on eBay with no grading myself... Just this month trying to make a fulltime go bc I'm doing well enough to try. My biggest lessons is turn & burn & if holding a star 4 specific even make sure you hit that timing correctly or it may be another year before you get the same opportunity if not forced to take losses. My biggest losses have been purchases back in 2020-21 when I first re-entered the sports side of it all but beyond that really haven't taken too many losses outside the major scandals ie Wander, Giddy... Always appreciate your data & reviews/insights. Its a lot of time & work but is it really work if I enjoy it & would do it anyways? Thanks for your time & the content. Much Love, Stay Safe, & Enjoy Cards!!
@TylerShort Жыл бұрын
Happy holidays Tom! Good to hear from you again! That is awesome that your making a full time go at it? How has the past 6 months been gone? I'd say my best part of the year was Jan-May. Major dropoff around National time frame and then I kinda just checked out the last 6 months and literally focused about all of my time on work/working out 10-12x a week, and hanging with friends. So I literally couldn't squeeze in cards
@tombullard6167 Жыл бұрын
@@TylerShort totally understandable bc need your health before wealth imo. As solely BIN in $10-$200 range it's been good. I've doubled up sales from october to November to december being my best yet but I'm sure there's many contributing factors to it like selling all sports & most non-sports & going from only doing it part-time to making real effort putting in 8-10-12hrs a day bc I enjoy it. One of the noticeable tangible areas I changed on eBay that I believe has resulted in the double up past couple months is changing my promoted listing from fixed rate at 2% to the variable rate allowing eBay to choose it daily. I believe it's helping get my listings in front of more eyeballs since opposed averaging 15% in fees & I'm now losing between 30-40%!! Its painful to give eBay such a large % but it really seems to be pay to play since promoted listings have become so important for anything outside the new hottest thing. I'm okay at this time eating the % since i prioritized & focused on # of sales to stay in eBay algorithm. The other thing I can say that's helped is accepting loses as am education in the business since I was one of those idiots too unfocused & careless to research past prices b4 buying PSA 9 Metal Universe Allen Iverson RC at $96 & a PSA 9 Fleer #401 Shaq rookie at $78 which when I initially started I priced to break even & wouldn't entertain any offers to now pricing at current market accepting offers even if its meant only selling the 2 of em combined for $50 minus 40% so I ended up with like $20 after all was said & done taking a $150 loss on 2 PSA9 90s base rookies... I fell for the nostalgia & FOMO but needed to learn & atleast it wasn't worst. So its been super important to become happy to just take what I can get to move on taking the loss to put it into something else I know better of. I did have a pretty nice nongrading 30× on $13 raw auction win thanks to seller mistitling as a Red Prizm /399 opposed to what it was which was a Maroon Prizm /22 Jude Bellingham (not even his rookie!). I feel like it was a bit detrimental to my learning curve though since it gave me unrealistic expectations thinking I could do that regularly so my store did stall out & cap out around only 15 sales from June thru September... I took October accepting the realities above then was fired from a job I loathed & i believe is immoral & unethical in debt collections which was a blessing & sign to shoot my shot. Thanks again for all the info & stats this gives a great perspective. Also I'm hoping december isn't an anomaly but more so a sign of things to come since it does seem like a bump in sales & prices when I've been told by many sellers that december is usually their worst/slowest month each year.

I am personally buying rare rookie cards and desirable rookie cards of players I think in 5 years could win a championship, Jayson Tatum, Luka Doncic are ones I love. Maybe some cheap Cade Cunningham. No point in buying non rookie autos or non rookie year cards unless they are high end low number stuff.
@TylerShort Жыл бұрын
Yup I'm still buying. This year was actually a more profitable year than 2021 and 2022, despite spending about 50% less money with PSA and buying 50% less. I really focused in on less speculative buying. Still some losers but overall I'm happy with where 2023 ended. The first half was incredible, and Ohtani really carried me all year and the data shows he was in demand. People will flip out over momentary ups and downs but ultimately I think if you park cash in players who are in demand as this data shows, you'll generally be okay. There's some exceptions of course but that's been the strategy. Less base stuff, more stable items, less reckless spending with PSA as it's just not warranted.

@@TylerShort i completely agree the people with disposable income are buying high end cards like NTs, flawless, Jordan, Lebron, Kobe Autos at great prices. They are buying only the good stuff. And as far as it pertains to current modern players they are only spending money on their absolute best cards. I am personally staying away from mid end and low end, I am buying higher end cards that have real potential in the future. Having a psa 10 luka non rookie auto wont mean much due to the amount of product that the companies will pump in the future. You've been in the hobby 25 years but don't understand why people buy the shiny new rookie vs the stable veteran? All that money moved from those 30 players moved towards those new rookies. Your analysis is akin to looking at Twitter and Zoom and declaring the stock market is crashing. You don't take into account the number of cards being sold vs which cards were being sold and those players who were rookies over the last 3 years or jumped into relevance that people speculated on not to mention those that jumped when being inducted into their HOF.
@TylerShort Жыл бұрын

@@TylerShort Did you also notice that eBay Terapeak doesn't separate by year when you jump from 3yr to 2yr to 1yr? Just looking at Trout sold you have a 3yr total of 1,567,718 if you look at last year only that is 628,558. Remove 2yr from 3yr and you get the total for the 3rd year only (2021) which is 432,303 and subtract both from the 2yr total and you get the 2nd years (2022) total which is 506,857. So, Trout's market hasn't collapsed and instead has increased over 20% year over year. You can confirm this by using the custom button instead of the last 3/2/last year.
