As a "Trini" I feel Ato Boldon on the sorry state of T&T athletics. I think it must be said yes at the administrative level nothing is being done to really stimulate interest for the sport, no plan to develop beyond the traditional events sprints 100m-400m, no plan to bring things to a professional level like having trained coaches instead of P.E. teachers at the secondary school level. Regular competitive events to stimulate competitive rivalry and expose athletes to events in the US, Jamaica and other countries to help raise the competitive level of the sport in T&T. I think in general the sport quite honestly doesn't have the fanatical support of the public in general that you see in Jamaica, Bahamas and even that I hear Grenada has been experiencing in the last over 10 years. Where the national School Championship in Jamaica generate crowds in excess of 30k people and everybody wants to be the next Usain Bolt, Shelly ann Fraser, Veronica Campbell, Elaine Thompson etc. I think things start off with the excitement and love for the sport and you love it so much that you want to put all the tools and your disposal to improve it like having professional coaches at the secondary school level, arranging events to expose upcoming athletes to a higher level of competition like regular competitions externally. I don't think we in T&T have that and the administrative level has the ability to generate this but have preferred to just collect a salary rather than finding ways to improve the level of the sport in T&T.

Ato gave the right answer to Bob Casto after Bolt destroyed the American sprinters [and we all know the U.S. disdain for smaller Developing Countries], if he had said differently they might have considered it an affront to basically his employers. One must also take into consideration that IOC President Jaques Rogge criticized Usain Bolt for what he termed as showboating and supposedly showing up his opponents, so the whole sentiment was kinda Universaly out there, for no developed Country wants to see an Athlete from a small Country so devastating, they consider it unproductive,, just look at the way the treat U.S. Soccer Teams penalty scored on them is ordered to be retaken, conversely if they mess up a penalty, they are given another chance, that's why I don't watch women's soccer, if Bolt winnings was dependent on a referee's decision, he might have had to re-run that 100m and consider the first one null and void,, or worst disqualify him.
@sbf2543 жыл бұрын
I didn't like his agreement with Bob Costas. Ato explained why he did it. I get it. The journalism moment was too big for him and he didn't have the courage to take a stand, he did it for self perseveration. His career. Therefore, he had to agree with the consensus. However, I thought this would've been the perfect cultural teaching moment where Ato could've educates these narrow-minded, bias foreigners on the various ways Jamaicans and other Caribbean athletes celebrate at track events ALA - Champs in Jamaica. That what Usain did was not meant to be personal or malicious against the sport or fellow athletes - It was evident that it was purely organic, Usain himself was in utter disbelief. By pointing out foundational cultural nuances, this puts Ato on a firm politically correct foundation - a doubt the haters would be so bold to vilify a people's culture. Therefore, instead of agreeing with the pushers of the construct, he saved himself from that harsh backlash and would’ve been seen as a culturally, socially aware, and skillful pundit. Dats just my two sense.
@marvelouss7193 жыл бұрын
Audley, thank you for posting a well-written comment. I enjoy immensely reading well-written comments although I might NOT agree with all the points raised. I just love, love a well-written comment. Finally, someone refers to the Caribbean countries as "developing countries" and NOT Third World. All my life I thought we had ONE world. I didn't know the world was split up into pieces. You know something, Bolt's so-called "showboating" adds interest and excitement to the world of track and field and everyone associated with it also benefits from his joviality.

Lady I totally disagrees with you that the young Jamaican athletes to joined Ato Boland camp,over the years I can remembered. That lady is very young and she does not understand the intricacies about, the Jamaican athletes them. Who useto trained in the United States, they never done well on the international level.Becaused most of the Jamaican athletes who gained scholarships to the United States, they over worked at their schools. Some of them sustained injuries during running for their colleges or universities, and got messed up bad,bad. Also they never done well at the Olympics is,since Asafa Powell stayed in Jamaica and. Do his training, Bolt 🔩 and companies ,Jamaica is doing much better in the track & field. Those girls 👧 from Edwin Allen and, some other high schools. They need to remain in Jamaica and kept up their training, they does not haveto go to the United States for training at all. That was the concepts of some Jamaicans people, that if you don't trained in the United States. You will never do well in any international sports, those kinds of concepts should be disregarded. Shelley Ann Fraser Price stayed same place in Jamaica and, beat all the United States females. Who ran against her on several occasions, there is 3 things a athletes really needed. Strength, Stamina and speed,but the number one is Stamina. Becaused the athlete can be leading the field and, in the last 40 to 30 meters. He or she just faked away very badly and, the rest of athletes just run 🏃♂️ passes him.
@blairboyd56173 жыл бұрын
Ato Boland you are misleading the lady 👩 about Jamaica track & field, I remembered when you useto run as a little boy 👦. I was born and grow up in Jamaica 🇯🇲, and from the time I have sense until now as a senior citizen. Jamaica always have youth clubs across the entire country, they may not have the amount of clubs like before. But they have a few clubs in Jamaica, that is where Bolt 🔩, Shelley Ann Fraser Price, Blake and Asafa Powell and companies trains.A lot of athletes gained scholarships from youth clubs track & Field to high schools back then, one of the biggest track & field event in Jamaica 🇯🇲 back then. Was all parishes at the national stadium 🏟, every organizations in Jamaica. Useto have their track &field events on a annual basis, so that encourages people to be apart of it. In Jamaica children is doing track & field from basic school, some people called it infant, or prep and. It all the up in life, to primary, all age, junior secondary, high schools, colleges, universities, you named it. Now that the money is in track & field, it is giving the Jamaican youths. More courage 💪 to trained,I do understand that Ato Boland mother is a Jamaican. But he does not embraced his mother culture at all, but it is still love.I been watching him running for years for T&T,so I know what am saying ok 👌.
