Sports Saturday #72 - NHL 2K6 (PS2)

With winter on the horizon, we figured it's been a while since we hit the ice and played some hockey. But unlike previous entries in this series, we're going to the 32-bit generation to check out a game that helped bring the sport into the 'modern' video game age.
You'd think it's not hard for a developer to screw up a sports game, but it happens more often than most people realize. Fortunately, NHL 2K6 isn't one of those examples.
If anything, it serves as a reminder of how high the competition was in the genre 20 years ago, when everyone was trying to supplant EA Sports as king of the sports game mountain.
Featuring strong graphics and presentation, easy game mechanics and challenging game play, it's more a case of what not to like than what went wrong in this franchise. So sharpen your skates and tape up your stick...we're playing some NHL Hockey...2K6 style!
