One of the cooler things about football, be it NFL, CFL, or college, is how much the weather can affect it. As long as it isn't lightning out, the game will be played.

The "Fog Bowl" was also notable because as they mention, it was the first (and probably last) game televised live in the States (until perhaps the CFL "expansion") on ABC's "Wide World of Sports". Back in "the day" airline travel wasn't as prominent as it is today. It's a day and a half train ride from Toronto to Winnipeg (as opposed to an hour and a half drive to Hamilton)😉 Bomber fans were practically giving away their ticket stubs to fans who wanted to attend the last ten minutes. My dad got a couple and I attended my first (partial)😉CFL game. Hamilton trailed 28-27 but had the ball at midfield. It was a certainty that they could at least kick a single and we'd get to see overtime right?🤤

The strike year of 1982 we had CFL coverage for a few weeks including a Warren Moon beatdown.

I can remember listening to that game on the radio, as it was tv blacked out in Saskatchewan. Some of my dad's buddies made the two and a half hour drive to Regina to watch it. You could barely see the highway it was ground drifting so bad.

Was a Cheerleader for Phila Eagles in NFL, then Choreographer for the Ottawa Rough Riders in 81’-82’ ! When I got back to view the NFL, it was boring to me! 3 downs, larger field, deep end zones, passing galore! CFL is awesome! NFL should take notes! I remember the grey cup in Montreal Ottawa 22 1/2 pt underdogs, very cold 🥶 in Montreal before the Dome!

The 1977 Grey Cup game was freezing cold after a warm spell snd a snow storm. The 1979 Grey Cup was also in Montreal and it was 15c, a very warm winter for sure into late January

I've always liked the CFL. They don't play in the middle of winter. Just imagine if they did! Heck, a Canadian November is winter in most American cities.

Not every city in Canada. Toronto is as warm as Chicago, and warmer than Milwaukee, Minnesota, and within a few degrees as Cleveland, Detroit, Boston, NYC. And we get less snow than most of the cities I listed. Toronto gets around 40 inches. Vancouver is like Seattle.

I think the CFL is better than the NFL, I wish it would get more exposure here in the states than 1 game a week on ESPN.

1-2 games (usually the least intresting ones as well) a week if we're LUCKY...and that's only during the first half of the season. They just all out stop airing any games over the air throughout the entire final stretch of the regular season once Labor Day and CFB roles around...becuase for some reason, North Foothill St vs West Jefferson Community College is a bigger priority for them smh. And it's not even like the old days anymore where we could find them on ESPN3...nope, we now have to pay $6 a month for their stupid service just to be able to watch 90% of the games, which scares away many people who are on the fence about watching the league. Are they TRYING to sabotage themselves and the league's popularity?

The coldest I've ever been was at the 1976 Western Final in Regina; -20 C, with a 30 mph wind. The 1993 Western Final in Calgary might have been even colder, with snow to boot. The first game of the 1971 Western Finals got foggy toward the end of the game, while the '73 Western Final in Edmonton had a thick fog in the 1st half. And I recall it looking rather foggy on TV for the 1982 Eastern Final at Exhibition Stadium. On Oct. 25, 1954, Sask. was leading B.C. 15-9 at Empire Stadium in the last game of the regular season, and it was called with 6 minutes left because of fog. Frank Cosentino played not only in the Fog and Wind Bowls, but his last game as a Tiger-Cat was in the second game of the 1966 Eastern Finals vs. Ottawa at the neutral site of the Autostade (then known as Expo Stadium) in Montreal. Russ Jackson said it was the coldest game he ever played in. A few weeks before that, the Alouettes beat the Rough Riders 1-0 at Molson Stadium on a day that was so windy that most of the fans had gone home by the time Peter Kempf scored a single on a wide field goal in the 4th quarter. Jackie Parker said the coldest game he ever played in was the 1958 Shrine Game at Civic Stadium in Hamilton, which the West won 9-3. Bryan Hall called Eskimo games for 42 years, and said the worst weather he ever saw for a game was in Calgary on Sept. 19, 1981, when 34,000 people showed up to see the Stampeders play the Eskimos. It was nice at the start of the game, but cold wind and rain came in right around halftime, and only about 8,000 fans stuck around for the 2nd half, despite the fact that their team was down only 14-9. The Eskimos won 21-10, and Dave Cutler missed a convert because he said his toe was frozen. That was Ron Lancaster's first game as a CBC colour commentator.

The coldest game I ever attended was the 1991 Grey Cup (#10 on their list). The wind chill at halftime was -35 C, and I was freezing my nuts off on the old metal bench seating in Winnipeg Stadium (despite bringing a cushion to sit on). It's still the coldest Grey Cup on record, but it was a fun game. Toronto won and Rocket Ismail was FLYING, returning that kickoff for a TD. Calgary put up a fight but they were outclassed in every way by the Argos.

@@VoIcanoman I was sitting in the end zone bleachers at that game; at least the wind held off, or they'd still be scraping bodies off the seats. I made it through the game okay, but after sitting for three hours tightly clutching everything I had (there was no backing under the seats, so if you dropped something, it fell a long way), my knees were so frozen I could hardly stand up at the end. Of course, there was some idiot in the last few minutes who took his shirt off and flopped around on the field like a seal.

16:46 those figures were in Fahrenheit, not Celsius. Had to have been colder than a particular game in Green Bay three years prior, or one which occurred in Cincinnati 11 years later.

17:57 Mississippi State could have used the Stampeders' kicker in 1983. Search for "1983 ole miss vs. Mississippi state" if you don't know about the "Immaculate Deflection".

It seemed as if Bud Grant had more hunger to win the 1960 Grey Cup than he ever did in any of his four Super Bowl appearances. Man did those Vikings teams lay down and take it.

That one guys right, I'd like to play in those conditions once, just to have to change tactics and style of play. God forbid players take the field nowadays. Too risky, no trophy to them is worth it, they'd reschedule in a heartbeat

FWIW the CFL really relies on gate sales for a lot of revenue. It almost makes sense to postpone say 1 day if the difference is between a blizzard or monsoon and clear weather, or -10C of temperature increase. Could be difference between 5,000 diehearts and 25,000 butts on metal bleachers.

As for Leon McQuay-the ground is not supposed to be able to cause a fumble. He was "down"...the Argos were screwed...BUT WAIT...the Argo defense stopped the Stampeders and Calgary was forced to punt! There was still enough time for Joe and the gang to get into field goal position, right? Well folks, this is the part of the game that people don't talk about, or don't want to...another Argo name truly deserves to be remembered because it was an Argo punt returner named HARRY ABOFS who drove the nail (or "kicked" it) into their hearts. The Calgary punt landed at Harry's feet close to the sidelines and, presumably in attempt to stop the clock, Harry did a little "soccer dribble" sending the ball out of bounds. For 10 points, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU KICK A BALL OUT OF BOUNDS??? Am I an Argo fan?😢
@orbyfan
@orbyfan 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reminder about Harry Abofs. That was talked about at the time as much as McQuay's fumble, but has been forgotten. As for McQuay, he hadn't yet been touched by an opposing player, so he wasn't down, and it was a legitimate fumble.

Dang, my Esks almost had that 1996 Cup. They would have 15 and the Argos would have 17 if that call was correct. But I guess its fine because earlier they were lucky as heck with the Als missing the 18 yarder leaving the score 9-8.
