As far as Kenpo goes, Larry Tatum is a technician through and through I enjoy watching him demonstrate and listening to his explanation a lot of people don't realize that demonstration videos are not for seasoned practitioners but for people at a beginning level learn to crawl before you learn to walk everyone watches MMA and stuff like that and doesn't realize those guys start off at a basic level before they become fighters

For the ones who discredit something before trying it, try it out before you damn it! Too many times, people we look at something and judge it to be worthless without experiencing it. Experience it with a good teacher, and then if doesn't go according to your idea, then you can complain about its value! This reminds me of movies in which everyone complains it's not possible to do things like in the movie. It's just a movie!!

To all fhe inexperienced people on here trashing Kenpo Karate, you can't be real martial artist. Its not about sport competition, its about life saving techniques. You want something fancy try taekwondo or that watered down team karate.Thats the problem martial arts has been watered down to the point people don't recognize a real system.Im a high level black belt and I know Kenpo works.

It would be really interesting to hear a detailed recollection of how you know kenpo works. Also really would like to know more about how you spar in practice.

Tae Kwon Do kicking techniques can be applied effectively to fighting. If you add other elements that you think you need and you find that TKD was a good base to work from. It teaches you timing, attacking and defending from open and closed stances, drawing and feinting techniques with blitz combinations. It served me well but I never thought of it as a complete system. You add what you need.

do they do any iron hand conditioning to kenpo to develop ability to break bricks?

@RobertGareau-z2b What does breaking bricks has to do with self defense? It's a great system to learn and I'm currently learning White Dragon Kenpo and it's awesome.I know in Kenpo they break boards,I don't know about bricks.I learned how to break brakes 33 years ago and now at times I'm in pain,it comes with a price.Dont get stuck on breaking bricks and boards.Im a 5th Dan in Shito-Ryu and 1st Dan in Shotokan and I'm working on becoming a black belt in Aikido and Jujitsu.

🤣 That's because much of this video are demonstrations. Others were demonstrations or teaching techniques/concepts at their basic level. The next levels relate to what if and flow where the attacker counters with "unscripted" responses, etc. Whenever you see Kenpo techniques on video, for the most part, they are demonstrating the basic version of the technique/concept. If you train in American Kenpo, hopefully you learn this. If you read Ed Parker's Infinite Insights... Series, 1-5 you will soon realize there is a lot more to it then what you see watching videos.

Took kenpo when I was younger. Sadly it’s really just over complicated karate/kickboxing the relies on opponent cooperation and theatrics. (Not the way the guys partners scream and grunt) you are far better off just finding a good karate or kickboxing school.

Finally somebody admits this. Kenpo targeting is good but the practical application is limited. It doesn’t account for resistance to techniques. Bit of a cult like personality to it as well. There is no end all be all art. And training for the street/self defense is simple. Not all this.

Kenpo is meant for realistic self defense not sport competition where most of its techniques are banned. It is not a sport like kickboxing, bjj or mma

You didn’t really learn Kenpo. you only learned the sequence of the techniques and never gained an understanding beyond that point. Probably just had a bad teacher.

@@allaboutmusic139 so again somebody commenting that really doesn’t understand the art. Techniques aren’t supposed to be executed perfectly in the real world in fact, Kenpo teaches the opposite. In its highest form, the practitioner should be able to free flow in any given situation so that ultimately you are not fighting from fixed positions. It is a unique art in this respect and fairly easy to misunderstand what it’s really about .
