Great video ,I have not been able to afford a good brace due to my very thick upper thighs. I have a meniscus tear on my right knee n I'm doing all I can to heal but living upstairs n having to go up n down for everything I have to do including going to school, has been super.challenging and making it hard to heal.

2:49 for MCL, avoid total immobility brace as the cells dont form to heal the ligament as quickly... 3:31 look for these types with strong rods inside and outside the knee to do half the work of the injured ligament... 4:15 the most stable brace goes extends high up and low down the leg and might feature an adjustable hinge so you can restrict the knee from straighten fully in the first weeks which is when the MCL is most under strain allowing it to heal, then gradually opening it up...

Thank you, if I found you earlier my rehab would be so much easier. My doctor didn't recommend brace and I was suffering again and again after each episode of going down stairs or any move provoking side forces. Intuitively I started to walk backward, avoid stairs and focus on exercises in stable position. Two weeks and it is much better ... before I lost 4 weeks with 3 physiotherapists who were doing keg stability tests on leg with MCL injury and asked me to do squats from the day one.

This sounds like me. I only just got diagnosed 6 weeks later and am needing to find the right tips. The ortho doc was useless. I do use a tensor right now.

Great video Maryke! Very helpful indeed. I wonder if you'd recommend sleeping with the knee brace on. I find it quite uncomfortable and counterproductive in a way, as I tried it for a night and have woken up with more swelling. Cheers in advence for the answer! 🙏

usefull info without an mri and clinical asessment only can the severity of injury between grade 2 or 3 usually be determined or is mri needed as well
@SportsInjuryPhysio9 ай бұрын
Ultrasound can also be used to diagnose it - If severe tear is suspected then Ultrasound or MRI is usually the most accurate to diagnose it - clinic tests aren't that sensitive

I have had Osgood-Schlatters for a few years now, but the pain has never gone away! I stopped all my sports last year to see if that will help, but nothing helped and I get pain on a daily basis. But the pain is only in my right knee. Do I need crutches or a knee brace?? Or should I see a doctor?
@SportsInjuryPhysio6 ай бұрын
Get it assessed by a sports doc or physio - it is likely that it has caused other complications e.g. tendinopathy and you just need a very graded rehab plan. Braces and crutches are not the answer here.

1. if i got click/pain/limp but no swelling might it be less severe and easier to heel? 2. with low/distal MCL clicking, what is the ligament catching on to cause the click? got 10+ year old MCL at times with pain/click/limp, specially when straight and a knee that gives-out descending stairs, other times with no pain/click/limp/give-out. i can walk one minute with pain, clicks and half stride limp; the next with no pain, clicks or limp. i know i'm reinjuring MCL with my routine mobility: by ill-pivoting to get in/out of car, odd change of direction with leg cross-over, and have quasi pigeon-toe stride. i now get pain when leg straight so needing a pillow under knee to sleep. some are neurological/elderly/overweight ex parkinsons which can make dressing and pulling on/off spandex sleeves difficult so we may need the wrap-around (no sleeve) type knee brace that we can strap-on over pants. let's hope this can provide 'enough' protection for the ligament.

so a while back i really hurt my knee (but they couldn’t do surgery) , but my dr. advised me to wear a knee brace, which i did for as long as he said, it felt better for a while and know my knee is really hurting again and i tried my old brace for a few weeks and i feel no support, i can’t get an appointment for about 4 months and my knee is in pain and i went to the er and they only ace bandaged it and i feel no support, i am in excruciating pain what do you advise me to do?
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It really depends on what is going on with your knee - the diagnosis guides the treatment - get it assessed by a physiotherapist - they will be able to give you exercises that can help and also diagnose it for you.

I had a question! It’s been four weeks since I hyperextended my knee turning direction in basketball and I felt like it has been healing well. I just went on vacation and used it a bunch for walking, hiking, swimming, etc with my partner. Now that I’m back home in a colder environment it feels a little uncomfortable sometimes even though I felt fine lately and was making great progress? Did I maybe just overuse it and need to go back to icing and elevating and start with small exercises? Some aching and some aching in back of knee area and doesn’t feel as comfortable at times when i squat all the way down but still am walking around fine and was able to straighten it fully and am able to almost lock it out completely to normal (hyper mobile joints) just worried I may have upset it by getting too comfortable using it when it felt fine at the time. Thought maybe cold weather effected it
@SportsInjuryPhysio5 ай бұрын
It sounds like you may have just irritated it a bit, so taking things easy for a while will likely help. 4 weeks is actually still a short time for that type of injury, so likely nothing to worry about but just take it easy for a bit.

How do you prevent the brace from sliding down the leg? My thighs r much bigger than my calves (like an inverted triangle) and gravity always pulls the brace down when standing or walking a little bit
@SportsInjuryPhysio7 ай бұрын
That is a tricky one - it can sometimes help to have it directly against your skin rather than over clothes.

I have knee to bone , grinding my left knee became useless after a stoke and left it unable to walk ? Can a brace helps me to walk again ? Nicolas
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
There are specific braces designed to take the load off the injured part that may be of use - they allow you to adjust where the knee joint carries the weight - if you search for "unloader knee brace osteoarthritis" on Amazon you should find examples.

By the time i had the MRI results back and was told i had a small tear, i'd had that big brace on for 6 weeks. Now had a neoprene support on for a week. walking and going up stairs fine, but what category is a 'small tear'?

Your previous comment was left on the lateral meniscus video and this one is now on the MCL video and these two structures are on opposite sides of the knee, so I am a bit confused as to what your actual injury is. Is it the meniscus that was torn or your ligament or did you dislocate your kneecap because you mention in the other comment that you had to be given drugs to straighten you knee and as far as I know that is usually the process to relocate the kneecap. Either way, I think you need to see a physio sooner rather than later to start your rehab.

@@SportsInjuryPhysio thanks for the prompt reply. My limited notes taken mentions 'radial at back of lateral meniscal', so (being a simple engineer), i should go back to the other video i watched and commented on. thx again

There’s two in that picture. The black one, although I don’t recognize that particular brand is similar to a DonJoy playmaker. The yellow one is a DonJoy Defiance.
