In the end, this Game 7 loss to the Habs and another first round playoff exit is simply a reflection of the fact that the Leafs don't have the right group of players to win those types of games. They must get the right group of defencemen and goaltending personnel in place first, or they will just continue on this path of being a great team in the regular season, but then struggle in the playoffs. That said, it won't be possible to make such moves if they keep around $40 million dollars in annual salary tied up in four players. One or two of those expensive key pieces will need to be moved out to make cap room, and it won't be easy. Case in point, Tavares is a good hockey player, but certainly not worth anywhere close to $11 million per season.

Without Tavares, Montreal just outplayed Toronto. Toronto in this series ran into defence that could handle their top line and Price. (They scored a couple goals). Montreal figured out their own line up in game 5. And Toronto had no response. Montreal was the better team, face it.

#1, Matthews and Marner aren't worth that much $$. #2, Tavares is delicate. Leafs need to draft players into their culture and identity. Look at players willing to sign team friendly deals. leaf fans are among the most loyal in any sport. this from a habs fan because if the habs had pulled a choke like the leafs just did the barn would be empty next year. fans in montreal wouldn't put up with losing like the leafs fans do. bell center would be a ghost town if the habs hadn't won a cup since 1967. i think the management of the leafs counted on that in the ballard era. this team is a much better product than it's been showing us, but they are still young, you got to give them time.
