My childhood as an oilers fan was so amazing. I remember the sleepless nights when Gretzky was traded. The emotion of the next season was only increased by the loss to the great one and the kings. 1990 was the year that will always be remembered for me and solidified my love of the oilers for life. I cried so hard with relief when the won the cup and even today watching this, the tears flowed. I’m 47 this year and have been an oiler fan since they came into the league. I will always be an oiler fan. I will be buried in my jersey when that day comes.

I tell people this was the greatest cup run in the history of sport. There have been only a few times a pro sports team has come back from 3-0 in a series. Edmonton did it against Winnipeg that year. It was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on a television. There was a couple games where they were down a goal or two and would win in the last minute or overtime. If you find a way to find that entire cup run watch it all. What a great run. Spring of 1990. Great memories.

I remember being a little kid and listening to the last game on my walkman. My dad had got a job in Grande Prairie and I was heart broken to move from Edmonton. All the cups the Oilers won were special to me growing up, but this one was the best for me personally. It helped assuage the intense home sickness that I felt on that lonely highway that day. All these years later, I hope I get to see McDavid hoist the cup in an Oilers jersey. Lord knows us Oilers fans have suffered enough over the last couple decades, and I can think of no better replacement for Gretzky as ambassador of the game than Connor.

Agreed! They were the Best team and Dynasty ever. They would've won 2 or 3 more if Gretzky wasn't traded which would have given them 7 or 8 total. People forget the Oilers went to the Conference Finals in '91 and '92 and Gretzky's Kings with 7 ex Oilers in '93 Finals and Messier's Rangers with 7 ex Oilers winning in '94. As of 2022 5 Oilers are still in the top 10 in NHL playoff scoring of all time. It was sick how good they were and the longevity they had as players.

This video brought tears to my eyes! The 1990 team was truly a great team. It's a painful process going through the past 30 years as an Oilers fan. I hoped for this year, but alas, the current team lacks conviction in the playoffs. The supporting cast is missing, but more importantly the superstars on the team need to be coached on how to play in the playoffs. It's a long painful road ahead, in my opinion. But I will still hope for next year... sigh....

The Oilers were literally being gutted by this time. Coffey in ‘87 was just seen as a bump. But after the ‘88 cup and Gretzky was traded was really the beginning of the end. Not only did they trade away another core player, but the captain and the heart and soul. Kurri was gone after the ‘90 cup, and Messier, Anderson, and Fuhr were all gone within a couple seasons. The effects of the ‘80s recession was still being felt with high interest rates, low grain and oil prices, the Canadian dollar plummeted, an election with the unfriendly to the prairies Liberals winning, and NHL salaries climbing did not help the Oilers at all during those times.

@@ryanjones8622 On a personal level I have no doubt that they'll always be tight. But consider that as competitors, Mess will always have the edge. He won a fifth cup without Gretz in Edmonton, then carried the Rangers on his back to win his sixth. Gretz couldn't do the same in LA, and never got close when he went to the Rangers. Gretz was supposed to be the final piece when he was traded to St. Louis ... out in the second round. Sure Wayne has all the stats and records that will never be broken, but if your team is playing game 7 of the Finals who would you want captaining your team? For me that's a no-brainer.

Absolutely. If Gretzky was given an extension on his contract and they could have held onto Messier, Kurri, Anderson, and Fuhr, they most likely would have won in 1989, 1991, and possibly 1992 and/or 1993. Imagine, consecutive cups from 1984 to 1993 with the exception of 1986?! Absolutely insane but very likely if they were able to hold onto those guys. Look how many former Oilers were on the 1994 Ranger team.

No they wouldn’t have. And I appreciate that oilers team. Not with Mario’s Pens out there. Plus did you forget the players the oilers got back from the Gretzky trade and through that trade? @thegoodguywins1
@thegoodguywins1 Жыл бұрын
@@oilersridersbluejays I disagree, the Oilers never woulda won that. Can you say Mario and Calgary? 91-93 the oilers were BAD in the regular season. They only got to the semis thanks to guys that got via trades. 93 they were horrible and in last place. By then age was on the horizon and other teams took over. There were only 6 guys from the oilers on the rangers and only messier and graves really produced. Many other guys on that ranger team were homegrown or from other teams.
@dzanier
@dzanier Жыл бұрын
@@thegoodguywins1 I think you’re wrong. The Oilers were able to win one without Gretzky and then made the conference finals in 91 and 92. In 92 they had no Messier, no Anderson, no Kurri and no Graves. The team benefited from the Gretzky trade to the degree that they could, but that fifth Cup was no walk in the park. They were a 90 point team that overcame 3-1 to beat Winnipeg, swept an LA team that was beyond beat up in round 2, and then had a tough time knocking off a good Chicago team. The Finals was a different story: they rolled over Boston. None of the players they got back from LA had the impact Wayne would’ve had. Graves wasn’t part of the Gretzky deal. I say they win at least two more. They managed to stay very competitive without Wayne and with Carson gone. Hard to believe having Wayne they wouldn’t have done at least as well and probably better.
@thegoodguywins1
@thegoodguywins1 Жыл бұрын
@@dzanier I think you’re wrong. The Gretzky trade helped them win the cup that year and it’s chronicled in this video of whom they picked up. They made it to the conference finals with this some new players in 91-92. Did you read what I posted? In 92 they got Damphouse, they literally fleeced Toronto for that guy as Fuhr and Anderson were done. They also picked up Nichols that year who helped them. You are forgetting the players your team picked up to help win. Who said anything about LA? Though they did get Gelinas there. I mentioned Murphy, Graves, Klima clearly did have an impact and beyond just the 90 season (they got those guys from the Carson deal…they got Carson from the Wayne trade). Hard to see Gretzky alone helping them win many more when they clearly wouldn’t have had those depth and scoring guys. Then there are the awesome teams of Mario and Calgarys 89 team. 5 and done bro. I don’t see it going further than that

Weird- Two teams in the four major sports, who won a championship in 1990, are still waiting for their next championships! Oilers and Reds. Giants and Pistons both won championships since 1990!

Lawomenshoops: I know this is not a North American pro sports team, but in England, Liverpool last won the domestic title (Premier League) in 1990. It was called Division One back then. Like the Oilers, Liverpool dominated the '80s, but haven't won the League since 1990. It's hard to believe.

Brian Cusack I was thinking how did you know I’m a Liverpool fan? But, I’m only a fan because 96 people should never had died going to a damn game! I only found out about Hillsborough a few years ago. But, the incompetence and coverup is just disgusting!! #JFT96

So, only Huddy and Kevin Lowe were 30, of the players who were part of the other Cup winning teams. Yet, they were getting long in the tooth? Generally, most players are in their prime from 26-32/33. So, many of them had 3-4 more prime years!! Wrong narrative!
