Originally it was called "Sportsnight With Coleman"and the graphics were cut much tighter to the music - there were some floodlights that zoomed in and out - enduring image, jumpers for goalposts etc. etc.

As stated by Des Lynam at the start the first Sportsnight of the year. The main feature were that nights FA Cup 3rd Round Replays. This is the night Liverpool, the Cup Holders, were beaten 2 - 0 at Anfield by then 2nd Division (now League 1) Bolton Wanderers.

Des lynam ...one of the greatest sports anchormen....(altho i often wonder, is it because i'm biased when remembering my halcyon youth or was he actually one of the best?......maybe a bit of both
