Hey everyone!
The 2023 MLB season was featured a few notable underperforming teams, including some of the league's biggest spenders. One of those teams was the Yankees and honestly the only I word I can use to describe the 2023 Yankees season is "disaster.

As a Yankee fan, it was humbling to see such a young, upcoming team in the 2017 season slowly get worse and worse in postseason play every year following until this disaster. I hope the Yankees office and ownership actually get serious rather than just throw away money to players who don't necessarily deserve it.

The Yankees' bullpen good ERA is deceptive. The bullpen was in the bottom of the league for letting inherited runners score. The good ERA was due to the fact the runs they let score were being charged to the starters. The Yankees need a reliable closer as well as a left fielder and another starter.

To be fair some of that is on the manager. When to bring in a reliever in during a tight game is a crucial skill to have. If you bring him in the middle of a mess with a hot hitter up, you're only setting him up for failure. I'm of the opinion that you should bring in your pen before the starter gets into trouble. The middle of the bullpen is always the weakest part of any team, so how you manage it is a huge part of your success during a season. I think the Yankees just had a down year this year... Happens.
@willpomeroy7711
@willpomeroy7711 10 ай бұрын
Ehhh, I disagree. As someone who watches almost every game, the bullpen was used more than any Yankees bullpen I’ve ever seen in team history. Besides Cole, no one on the Yankees staff could get reliable innings and the starters rarely if ever went 6 innings, and were lucky to get even 5. The bullpen was tasked with getting 15+ outs almost every non-Cole pitched game. The Yankees were also a team who used Openers since they had so much bullpen depth. In my opinion the Yankees bullpen was a massive weapon and not overrated at all as you’re implying. The Yankees starters stunk last year and the bullpen is why they didn’t finish 15 games under .500. Let’s not forget the Yankees had the second-lowest batting average in baseball, 25th in runs, and the game was effectively over whenever the other team scored over 5 runs. Letting inherited runners score is more of an indictment on the starters constantly getting stuck in the 5th and 6th innings, and it’s very unfair to act like the bullpen “blew” games frequently. I’d like to know their inherited runners scoring ‘rate’ and not just a cumulative sum. EDIT: after checking the stats, the Yankees bullpen had the third-highest Left On Base percentage in baseball at 75.2% (the higher the rate the better, you might have mistakenly assumed this to be the opposite), only behind the Astros (76.6%) and Brewers (76.4%). The Rockies had the worst Left on Base rate at 66.6%. So your original post is BS. The Yankees pen also had the 2nd lowest HR rate in the MLB, only behind Baltimore, so they rarely ever obtained much damage. There's no way you're a Yankees fan and/or you didn't watch last season, lol.
@willpomeroy7711
@willpomeroy7711 10 ай бұрын
@@chrisMoutkastragtop That's factually incorrect though. The Yankees Bullpen had the third-highest Left on Base percentage in baseball, meaning they stranded runners at a very high rate. Please correct your original post to not mislead people.
@fje6902
@fje6902 10 ай бұрын
@@willpomeroy7711 The Rockies had the worst bullpen. The Rockies IS% was 39% in 2023. The Yankees was 36%. The LOB stat is also deceptive. The bullpen was overused, but when you have to rely on second rate retreads because your best guys are always hurt, your results will suffer.

As a Yankee fan, this is how my dad described the early 90's before George got banned. When he did, there was a scout/manager (I forgot his name.) who essentially kept the likes of Jeter and such from being traded for names. And this trend persisted in the early-mid 00's, with one ring to show for it. The problem is while they're certainly more into the farm, Cashman/Hal have such a shit analytics team that yes they can afford big names, they won't look into the right numbers to make the team thrive and get what they need. I also think knocking the old stadium down cursed them, but that's my own superstition.

Personally, as a Yankees fan, the MOST frustrating part of the season was Rizzo's "slump". LITERALLY, everyone could see he wasn't the same after the collision with Tatis. I said for weeks, he had PCS. In second place, is the performance and attitude of Carlos Rodon. For the $$$ he got, and then an injury... then him blowing a kiss to the crowd. HOWEVER, now that the season is over Cashman stating that this team "is pretty f***king good" is a low point for my beloved organization. CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE!!!!

We see a few teams try to buy a championship, but the Rangers at least made sure they developed some young guys that could contribute while spending huge money. Other big market teams should take notes. Depth and development is just as important as the money you spend on star players.

The AL east was a total disaster as even the playoffs bound teams were eliminated in the first round. It’s becoming obvious that you can build great regular season teams that don’t perform well in the playoffs. The Yankees were not the only disappointing team in the division.

Honestly, I still look at average, HR, RBIs and strikeouts to tell me if a player is good or not. The other are analytics BS. Take Judge, his average for me is a bit better than average, though it was bad in 2023 (sorry, today's batting averages are trash), his HRs are great (when healthy), RBIs are a bit above average and strikeouts terrible. Its really amazing how bad things have gotten today and who is considered a superstar.

I like Stanton, DJ, and Rizzo, but they need to go. They have so many young players they can bring up and just let the kids play and get these aging old players the hell out of the starting lineup. Being a Yankee fan is a roller coaster of a ride for the past almost 15 years. I have been a fan for 35+ years and this last 7 years has been a joke and they are playing sloppy baseball. As long as I can remember, they Yankees always rely on 1 or 2 players to hit and there other 8 players suck. I don't know, this season (2024) is not a post season team let alone a world series team. The Rodon contract, I think, will go down as one of the worst signings from Cashman is a longtime.

Yankees problem with hitting is. Everyone is trying to hit it out of the park every time there up. They have no contact hitters and the ones they do have declined significantly. Let’s be realistic though if the Yankees won 85 games in a season they’d be saying it to be much worse than other teams.

The Yankees have some very bad contracts that hard to move on from including Stanton, whatever young players they have they might not can keep because im sure Cashman will explore the trade market. This off season i find it hard to see the Yankees signing 3 FA to massive contract, the fact they are interested in Bellinger is a gamble due to his age but keep in mind Scott Boras is his agent who is notorious for getting players massive contract for any Yankee fan just wait and see.

The Yankees are spending a ton of money on an aging roster. Stanton has literally disappeared. He's declined so much that you can't rely on him for consistent home runs anymore. When Judge got hurt it was like the rest of the team went down with him. Cole is a great pitcher but the Yankees need more depth. This team better win a world series in the next two years or else I believe the window is closed. Due to age.

As a yankees fan. Fire eveyone from Hal to boone. Then I'll trust whatever they do. I just hate knowing that they will sign people like bellinger, kiermire, by overpaying along a few random players and then cashman will say how they improved and want to win the world series. I just hate being a yankees fan and seeing them sign/trade for players past their primes or clearly ignoring established stars in free agency like machado, harper, freeman etc...
