The grey one is a knock off of the upgraded grip with 20cv (if I remember right) and G10. The black one is a standard grip with plastic handles and s30v steel. If these were both real the grey one would be more expensive.

I've learned my lesson. I will say that knife was a workhorse but I don't thinknit was worth the money I spent on it.

I’m surprised to see so much hate for benchmade. Seems like a lot of people have opinions based on other peoples opinions that have spread. In Iraq I carried a sog that failed, a gerber that broke and I replaced it with a benchmade that lasted longer than the other two and was my edc on the ranch for over a year after that. The only reason I replaced it was because I lost it in the mud while cutting twine to separate flakes of hay and didn’t find it for a few months. It’s now my dedicated truck knife that lives in my console because it’s nothing fancy but I know it’ll do the job if I need a knife for any given task. All 3 were subject to similar abuse. I know that’s not saying a whole lot that the benchmade beat out the sog and the gerber but benchmade isn’t that much more expensive and it’s made in USA and I’ve always been one to support the home team. I’m sure I could find a chinesium knife for less that would do just as well but communism and global warming and pollution and politics blah blah blah. Fact is any American regardless of political beliefs should support the home team. Period.

I’m not even sure of their political stance as a company but I’ve noticed the same people who preach climate change and human rights are the same people who have no problem buying from China, who is the or among the worlds largest polluters and their products are so cheap because they pay their workers penny’s an hour with no regard for the environment and if that’s not bad enough the knives need to travel from China to America and those cargo barges aren’t wind and solar powered. Your other option is paying a little more for a US made knife that’s made by a company operating under epa regulations and paying their workers wages that are at or above the federally mandated minimum wage. That’s why they cost a little more. Coming out of the factory they are shipped from Oregon to Colorado or Florida or wherever in vehicles that are also federally mandated to meet certain standards in regards to pollution. I’m merely calling out the hypocrisy for those who claim China knives are superior yet vote to save the environment. Saving the environment means bringing as much production as we can home because the majority of the world’s pollution comes from countries making products with zero regard for the environment, for consumer nations like us.

First of all, there is a difference of Chinese made knives, and Chinese made clones. Companies like WE, Kizer, Reate, and others produce quality knives for American companies, often using American designers. Then there are Chinese companies that are producing "gas station knives" that are illegal copies of American made knives. Clones are BAD... Then, l support American companies that are competing in the market with American made knives...companies like Benchmade, Spyderco, Buck and others. And l don't let uneducated loudmouths who follow politicians and political viewpoints, to sway my opinions in areas where politics does not apply.

I say black is real because Benchmade usually has a parkerized finish on the pocket clip on the other Benchmade models I have and not a shiny paint. The original griptilian says Benchmade and not the butterfly logo .

Spending time in the military, actually using pocket knives like they should be used, benchmade is overpriced for what youre getting. I settled on smith and wesson $20-35 knives and they lasted 2-3 times longer. Just remember, mo expensive doesnt always mean mo better.

Benchmade do have a lifetime warranty. Especially if your sending it in from an APO address. When I broke a blade they just sent me a new knife. I'm not saying they are great and this was when we were at war. But, as long as you don't loose it. It'll last your entire military career. Because, they will just keep replacing the blades or send you a new knife.

Grey is the clone. The grey one has a stone washed blade to match/copy the look of cpm steel. The hardware (pivot) is to smal on the grey one. The grey one has plastic scales while the origional grey one has G10 scales. The pocketclip is a dead give away

Just got a clone of the full-size osborne, and the quality between the clone and real deal isn't enough to make me pay full price for another benchmade product. Im a maintenance worker, so i use my knives daily and hard. That's just my experience. However, i know many companies make different clones, so im sure that's not the case for everyone.

You can also tell from the flushed pivot screw, most clones the screws are sometimes smaller and domed on the pivot while the real one are flush.

Pocket clip on the black one has some funny discoloration although the gray one does look cheap. You can see the little bits hanging off of the machining of the plastic on the gray one that’s to give away the cutouts for screws in the plastic on the black Fit much better. But the stonewash play actually looks better and be nice to see a satin blade next to a satin blade to see the difference.

The steel gives it all away. S30V has that almost grainy or stringy appearance. The clone on the right looks like 7cr17MoV, common in Gerber knives. Other point: I only have 3 Benchmade knives. Two 940s and a bugout. All the pocket clips say benchmade on them, not a bench made logo. I don’t know if benchmade makes pocket clips with they’re logo or not.

Black is original. All fake ones has silver threads in the pocket clip holes and the blade has a switcjed blade finish. Original blade has a stonewashed primary phase and grinded blade flank. Fake ones have a grinded phase amd stone washed flank ;)

Only benchmade’s I kept over the years are the Siebert Fixed blade Arvensis. I bought 4, 2 satin and 2 black, and then had sheaths custom made. The factory ones were junk. Solid fixed blade now discontinued.

100% Grey is fake. Thumb Studs and Axis bar are all wrong Text on the blade is brown when it should be black Pivot screw is on the wrong side (meaning it’s not keyed properly)

A lot of people are talking about the shiny pocket clip, but my 551-1 came with a glossy one. What gave it away for me was how light the gray was and the lack of texture, the real one is g10 not straight up polymer

The pivot itself isn't a dead giveaway. The pivot screw on the other hand...a t8 pivot screw is not very benchmade. All mine have t10 pivot screws... including my REAL sheepsfoot 20cv grip.

Grey one I believe. The pocket clip is to shiny plus the blade doesn’t have the signature grind marks on the flats where logos are.

⁠​⁠the black one is real. thats the correct pocket clip. thats actually the first thing that caught my eye as to why the grey one was fake. then i noticed that the texture of the plastic was way off, as well as the hardware. when he opened them up, the blade also is very obviously fake on the grey one just in the color and shine alone, but the logos also are the wrong color and the type of steel is marked in the wrong spot and benchmade only writes 20cv for this type of steel instead of writing out the whole name. theres a ton wrong with the grey one, and the black one is just a plain off the shelf bottom level griptilian. they make versions that look nicer, this is just the “base” model for lack of a better term. the black one is 100% the real one, and don’t let the plain looks deceive you because its one of the most ergonomic and sturdiest feeling folding knives that i’ve ever used even in its simplest form.
