I use a Fastback (without the bit holder) for my fast food job where my primary role is putting away and rotating stock so I have to cut a lot of boxes (since we cut the flaps off of boxes currently in use) and I found that going through that much cardboard was dulling my usual EDC knife (Buck 285) very quickly so I picked up the Fastback for $12 at Home Depot and it's perfect for the job.

When I gift a buddy a knife, it's way easier to just give them something like this and never worry about having to sharpen it for them. Being able to just swap in a new blade is something everyone understands, but it also gives them a glimpse into the world of high end knife mechanisms. Best of both worlds.

I love my Milwaukee fastback with the screwdriver. It's been my edc knife since it came out. I'll still carry something like an Esee fixed blade into the woods, but for true edc, the razor blade is perfect. I also dont think the fastback is large at all, and maybe even flys under the radar better than the fancy knives you showed. the fastback just looks like a mundane work tool, not anything threatening.

The main reason I carry a edc utility knife ( olight Otacle ) is because it is illegal to carry a knife on you where I live. But seeing I need to cut boxes etc it’s easier to explain a small utility knife than it is to explain a “normal” knife. The second reason is it’s faster to change a blade than it is to sharpen one.

I have a Gerber Gear EAB Pocket Knife with Money Clip, that I got after seeing a friend EDC it, but never got into carrying it much. A good basic EDC utility knife. My favorite EDC utility knife of the moment is the Olight Otacle U1 Carbon Fiber Small Folding Tool for $25. I find it more comfortable and faster. Another advantage of the latter is that if one forgets they have it, and need to pass a checkpoint, one can remove and dispose of the blade without tools.

Since you asked... I would probably prefer the Civivi version. It is just traditional, simple, and a solid locked blade would give me piece of mind. I don't like the blade wobble of the fast changing versions. Also, not like I would be carrying extra blades with me. So as I get a new blade from my garage toolbox, I could easily remove the screw for a blade swap. However if I had to use a blade knife for work and need a quick change version, then I would probably go for a DeWalt or Milwaukee (preferred) version. Having a beefier version seems to be less stress on the hand.

I've owned the majority of the knives shown here, down to my last favourites Exo, Civivi, Exceeds, and have the Pichi on the way. I absolutely love all of them, Civivi might have to be my favourite, just because of multiple deployments, and that the blade is fixed with a screw. Finally, a utility that is well made and the blade doesn't come out when getting stuck in materials. Can't wait to see how th Pichi is in hand.

so far my favourite utility knife has been the titaner raven it uses olfa ckb2 blades, which are much thicker than standard utility blades, and much much longer i still treat it as a regular knife and sharpen it, but i will use and abuse the blade without worry of it breaking or chipping since i can just easily replace the blade in less than a minute. they have a quick change version out now too. the biggest downside is the olfa blades are quite hard to get in canada, and are at MINIMUM $2 a blade, usually more.

i used to have some little folding utility knife when i did building maintenance for a hospital but it was more or less a razor blade holder because i was constantly using it to scrape things off of surfaces and i carried a regular knife as well. when i got back into construction i was doing underground utilities and i had just bought six Kershaw 1775 od-1 knives and that was the only knife i used for six years i didn’t carry a second knife i had like a gentleman’s folder with some extra making parts so it was a high maintenance knife that i out through a hard use application for that long and really enjoyed that experience everyone around me carried utility knives and i always felt like i used my knife a lot more than anyone around me. i don’t want to explain everything about prison gangs or really get into that story but i ended up with ptsd pretty bad a a few years and it’s been a couple years since i’ve had an episode i had to quit drinking entirely but anyway i started getting a lot more into knives after that and carrying multiple knives and finding ones that pair well together. i kept taking construction jobs after that too so i’ve revisited the utility blade knives and even though i find them useful here and there i don’t really like them. i like the bit driver on the fast back but i couldn’t stand the rest of it so i gave it away to someone who had lost theirs. i’ve had a cool one for a while i can’t remember what it is but it’s titanium and it slides out and it just sits by the front door in case my wife wants to use it for boxes or something. and then they one i grab out of my tool box when i need it at work is the swedish style “shark knife utility knife” and i really like it. it is a fixed blades version made specifically for roofers and carpet layers with a really large funky looking handle which is very ergonomic and it has a bi directional cheap plastic sheath that also has a pocket clip so its like a pocket fixed blade and it has a dial you unscrew and the handle folds open and you can store another ten blades inside. i like it because i think it is really trashy and sloppy to leave used razor blades around a job site and this way when i’m changing the blades i can stash my old used blades back in the handle with the rest of them until i get back to ground level and it’s fun to use and carry but it’s still not nearly as enjoyable for me as carrying a regular knife so it lives in my tool box and i’ll fetch it if i need it that bad. i am probably going to get the exo because it is the only california legal gravity knife ever and the civivi looks cool but i know i wouldn’t ever use it so i would just give it to someone else. come to think of it ive had my shark knife about eight years now and i do see sometimes a custom made utility fixed blade knife pop up without the weird looking shark handle and the cheap plastic sheath and it is really convincing but all the ones i’ve seen have the civivi problem that there’s a screw holding the blade in place which requires a separate tool to change the blades so i haven’t found the right one just yet but that’s more or less what i’m looking for in a utility knife is maybe a slightly classier version of what is already working for me in a fixed blade version

I never need to sharpen it and it does almost every cutting task ive needed to use it for. Im a park ranger so i do a wide range of different tasks. The only thing it kinda sucks at is cutting rope but it works. Also i haven't tried cleaning animals with it yet. My guess is that it wouldn't be very good for cleaning game. Its smart for these companies to do. There are a lot of knife guys that work manual labor jobs and unfortunately a normal knife isnt always ideal. You have worry about messing your blade up and you can end up in a situation where you have a blade that is dull but you can't sit there for 20 min putting a good edge on it. With utility knives i can cut things on concrete or other hard surfaces and worst case scenario i throw another 3 cent blade in it thats razor sharp then move on with my day. Its just more convenient for some things.

@donaldstrader7241
@donaldstrader7241 4 ай бұрын
@@thorin693 I have to be careful of small knives with narrow handles such as the Splint. I do not have any problem with the Olight Otacle U1 Carbon Fiber Small Folding Tool as it has a broad handle. Lay it in your hand/palm with the blade side up. Your thumb and index finger should be pinching the rail or bar lock buttons on each side. Your middle finger should be resting on the clip if right handed; if left handed, just a similar position--essentially your fingers are curled down out of the way. Now pull back on the rail lock and flip open or closed. There is no way for the blade to contact your hand. This also works fine without the blade so anyone can safely practice. Some caveats. I like the Otacle U1 so much I bought an extra. I just realized the screw was so tight I could not unscrew it or screw it by hand. Perhaps some locktite, debris or slight cross-threading? In any event I carefully used a pair of Knipex 87 01 125 pliers, using the front portion, to carefully grip the screw to avoid damaging/scratching it and now that I have worked it out and back in a couple times, fingers work fine. I also noticed early on that the spare was not as smooth as the original, then realized I must have used Nano-oil on the original. When I did this with the spare it too became smoothly operating. I colored the original one's jimping with a red magic marker so I can tell them apart. The temporary screw issue just reaffirms the "use your gear" before you deploy/carry it rule. An easy fix sitting at my desk with a small pair of pliers within reach. Realizing I had it before a TSA checkpoint, would not be so cool. It was really tight so I am not sure even scraping it against a sidewalk or something would have moved it, so I could remove the utility blade. One plus side, in any event, we are talking about a $25 tool that is replaceable (although they were out of stock for a while). A last caveat. When inserting a utility blade always make sure it is fully seated. If on the back hole the blade will still stick out slightly, so test it out with two hands to see if it is inserted properly. I think the secret is that when you are slipping in the blade, lift it up very slightly to lift the retention bar, as you slide it in. Then it inserts fully.

I think allot of us into this hobby or whatever you want to call it...we all appreciate good build quality and materials. And that also means good blade steel. And that all tends to come with a higher price tag. We then also realise using our expensive knives for some hard use tasks is not a very nice concept in terms of what it could do to the blade. That's where a knife with a cheap and replaceable blade slots in perfectly. Not to replace our nice knives, but complement them.
@ELaster1
@ELaster1 5 ай бұрын
You said that they are good for people who hard-use their knives. I think the opposite is true. Most EDC content comes from people that don't use their gear, which is apparent from how "new" the gear looks. After they sold us on how much 200$ EDC pocket knives are important for all of us, although all their knife needs could easily be fulfilled with a cheap box cutter, these utility knives bridge the gap. They are trendy because some of us don't need to carry a knife at all but want to have one, for some reason.

I also have not had that happen, but if it does, I'll blue loctite it. I'm using this as a EDC pocket knife, so it should not need frequent blade changes.

I liked the pichi design the best and was gonna buy one but it aint $89 any more. It's $116 early bird price and may be $193 full price which is the most ridiculous price I've ever seen for what it is. They are crazy if they think people are gonna spend $200 for a utility knife. It was already expensive at $89 but you said it's titanium so I can see the premium. Why not make it out of aluminum and put a $39.99 price tag on it.

Once again I’ll say it. These are EDC utility knives. Smaller, lighter, better materials. Easier to carry than traditional utility knives. 3 key things for carrying these things------1 uses a normal utility blade---those proprietory ones hard pass 2---good lock up---if it fails then your losing digits 3---able to replace the blade easy---carried the Outdoor Edge many years but it was one shot deal as the blade replacement was stupid--- my choice nowadays is Olight Otacle U1 for light use and Coast DX126 for heavy use

@@ChrispyThings I mean. The hawk shortcut is widely regarded as the grail for most people into EDC utility knives. There is a reason they are $500 and sell out instantly, Everywhere. I’m just saying.
