When you see REAL gold in the pan for the first time, it is unmistakable. There is no other.

I've found neat trick out in the field, just use the shadow of your hand. Pass it over the 'subject' if it stays yellow ... GOLD! If it doesn't ... it's leaveitright mineral.

When people ask me, "how do I know, it is gold", I always answer, "When you see gold, you will know, there is nothing like gold..." That was the case with my firs pan with gold. I just knew...

In PNG during a certain gold rush in the 90's in the highlands you could not buy a brass fitting within 100k as it was common for then to be filled down and added to cons to fool the buyer - which I was doing on behalf of the landowner who has the mineral rights. As the gold in the region was ~830 fine it was actually difficult to just look at the fine con and pick the difference, My tactic to get around this - don't forget this is in the field gold buying at 10 000 ft - was to insist on doing a pan test on what they were trying to sell to me. The sellers that were honest agreed immediately so no issue, the sellers that knew they were busted said they would sell elsewhere and left quick and the ones that took the chance were shown after a quick dish my concerns and were offered the option to take their material away - no fault no issue. Remember this is in the highlands in the 90's. I used a 14 green and a 10 black and still have them. I like that panning is a powerful skill to learn and is still being displayed. I was buying up to 10kg a day to put it into perspective ,all in cash and had 4 police with shotguns at all times. The majority were larger pieces >2mm that could be hand picked quickly so no drama telling the difference. I used to watch the locals dish and only pick out what they could and discard the rest back into the creek as it was not worth their time. We estimated about 1 million ounces were taken from that field over 5 years and at its peak there were 5000 people. The chopper pilots were paid in gold tipped into a jar.

Just a side note for panners.Pirate tends to flit around in the pan and most times floats out on the surface.Fine gold will float if contaminated,dirty water etc.If you see a bunch of shiny sitting on sand inthe water it is not gold.Great vid Chris.

Gold is awesome and the most respected metal in the world don't see how people could confuse pyrite with gold so easy to tell the difference for one thing pyrite doesn't stay at the top of the pan like gold or lead or even iron but I'm sure there's still people out there that can't tell the difference thanks for sharing mate 🕵️

Sorry! Not a pure element. All placer or lode gold is a blend of gold, silver, copper and various other platinum group metals. It can contain other elements like lead, zinc and iron. It's NEVER 100 percent pure, nature doesn't work that way. Pyrite and calca pyrite can also be present. Gold and it's various counterparts can be found fused to all such other parent minerals such as quartz, feldspar, granite ect Sorry to correct you Chris.
@VoGusProspecting
@VoGusProspecting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes yes. But gold is an element. It's literally on the periodic table. And gold almost always makes up the vast majority of placer gold, giving it its colour. You'll get different shades from all the inclusions yes but it's always gold.
