I remember a while back there was a legitimate fear that fakes would eventually wreck havoc on the coin market because the average person wouldn't be able to tell real from fake as the fakes would get better over time. Those scanner machines were also much more expensive than they are today. Now every coin shop has those scanner machines and that seems to have done a good job of snuffing out the fakes from the market. It seems the fakes only get passed on by shady people. Always buy from reputable people to protect yourself.

Just a note on the having to hand in counterfeit coins, this presumably ALSO applies to those fake 1937/1938 crowns and 1930 pennies (as well as any other pre decimal coins)? If only the holey dollar and the dump have ever been demonetised in Australia, then presumably keeping fake pre-decimal currency would also be illegal.

You can bring that through for sure! With things that are mixed like that, it can be hard to know exactly what the percentages would be mixed throughout the entire piece, but could at least show you what metals are in there and aim for a rough value! Only other thing we typically say is you may have to be patient for other customers purchasing items, but absolutely bring it through :)

@@thomaswoodall3215 Just be sure to gather proof first. Have you weighed the coin? If it doesn't weigh the amount specified, that is proof. You can also use a website called FakeBullion that has comparisons between real coins and common fakes, I used that to figure out a coin I got off ebay was fake. Got a refund easily by showing evidence from that website, and also showing a photo of the coin on a scale showing it was under the weight described, and also comparing photos I took of both sides of the coin to photos of the actual coin from reputable websites (with links to those websites edited on top of the images).

Could be although we see them come from all different sources. Although I'll guarantee they all originate from the same one or two factories originally. Thanks guys for the great information. I have to say, those fakes are really quite good which is very troubling? Just a thought.....Can you imagine just how good the fakes we become when Silver eventually starts really climbing in price!
@BullionNow5 жыл бұрын
And this is the real concern. I have to say - the fakes even from a few years ago were pretty obvious. They are getting harder and harder to spot as the technology becomes cheaper and the coins become worth more. Notice they didn't copy a cheap kangaroo. It was the more collectable, expensive coins. Even the kook wasn't just a kook but a more collectable goat privy.

Trouble is, some of the fakes are getting really good and then put them in a capsule and it's almost impossible to tell them apart except with an xrf. And you don't want to start opening capsules with some of the collector coins like Kookaburras.

Yep - and they don't have much of a sense of humour about it either. And fair enough too - someone is forging our national currency. It's bad enough the banks and government do it legally without private citizens setting up and doing it in competition with them.

Noticed the real 999 silver measured up as 9999. Does that mean the mint used to understate at 999?
@johndeckard65925 жыл бұрын
999 and 9999 are the same thing mathematics wise, the difference is pretty miniscule
@BullionNow5 жыл бұрын
Depends what they can get a hold of. Most (probably all) of the modern Perth Mint stuff tests as 9999. A lot of the other major mints are the same.
@HifiCentret3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that in hand these two coins would be easy to spot with just simple tools. Because of their composition they'd most likely fail the magnetic slide test too. Most fakes for some reason use brass/bronze. It's easy to detect with only just a little bit of rutine. Had they been silver plated pure copper they'd be much harder. Then they'd pass the simple magnet slide test without an issue and even with a real one beside it would be very difficult to see any difference and if they had right diameter and weight too (thickness had to be a hair thicker then) I'd guess they could fool many. But guess pure copper is too espensive for people having those tendencies... One test they'd fail though if the ping test. That's the beauty of coins - they have a very well defined frequency. If you have a known real one beside you might be able to hear it and diffinitely brass and bronze you can instantly hear they'll have a wrong sound to them. But if silverplated pure copper then you'd mot likely not be able to notice it's wrong unless having something to compare with - here's various "coin ping test" apps to the rescue. Most apps have the most common coins but some also let you define a weight, diameter and (for gold at least) purity and then use that information to suggest whether or not the coins ping as expected. Simple but effective if you know your stuff.

My local dealer doesn’t have a machine because he won’t be able to rip people off anymore . I saw a couple bring in 3 large boxes of pure 9999 silver and gold from the Canadian mint . He said I’ll give you what’s marked on the coins. They walked away with a $600 cheque, while the dealer stole over $25,000 from them . I told him Karma’s a bitch. I walked out and I never returned. These machines should be mandatory.
