I had noticed someone had built something similar and the transformer had over heated. and melted. Microwaves also have a cooling fan in them to keep things cool maybe you may want to address this situation before you might have some challenges. Just a thought. But nice build. Did you remove the magnetic bypass also? In the first version I could see they were in place. They are the metal sheets between primary and secondary winding. They limit the current by allowing the magnetic field to take a bypass route.
@mattmcgahan
@mattmcgahan 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. I know them as shunts and they were in place at first then later removed. This is why the nail melted, as amps increased due to their removal, not due to the extra turn which would have increased volts.

@@mattmcgahan yes and no. The current is limited by the transformer but also by the resistance of the weld. In theory 1 turn should yield the most current but because the voltage is really low then, the resistance limits it more then the transformer would with more windings. Around 3 turns is the most optimal balance between voltage and current in a MOT spot welder

Agree. Increasing turns ratio doesn't increase out power but voltage and lower the current actually. Now if he tries to change it back to 2 turns, he will get more "Power" (it's actually more current).
@mrroronoa8
@mrroronoa8 5 жыл бұрын
Actually. Increasing turns make coupling more efficient. More Volts on same length wire=More Amps=Increased Power. (As long as primary doesnt limit current, Which it shouldnt in this case.) More volts=More current flow accross load(nail)
@AntonChromjak
@AntonChromjak 5 жыл бұрын
I tried secondary in short power and it wat 1400W with two shunts, 1600W with ony one and 1800W with no shunts with 4 turns at 3,5V so you are right, do you think lowering turns will help with current?
@krlenjuska
@krlenjuska 5 жыл бұрын
@@AntonChromjak yes its simple math. less turns -less voltage=more amps.
@Expedient_Mensch
@Expedient_Mensch 5 жыл бұрын
@@krlenjuska What the fuck are you talking about? V=IxR therefore I=R/V that means that fewer volts will deliver less current through an equivalent load. The reason you get more current out of the transformer with the lower voltage is due to magnet saturation of the lamination, IE you are operating under overload conditions, what you really need is a larger transformer. Look it up on "Da Google" or something.

I want to build a spot welder like this but set it up to weld mortice lock keys together to make my own keys. Do you have any suggestions on how to modify the welding electrodes to weld keys up from scratch, I know that most modern mortice lock keys are spot welded together in 3 pieces (a washer, a stem and a blank part that is cut to the profile of the lock levers) but HOW are these keys welded together using a spot welder ??

@@marisbuildsahouse4304 Hi, I've been working on building a butt welder instead which is what these key manufacturers use to fuse together the parts of a mortice lock key. It does require a very high current from a similar microwave transformer and also a timer to get the butt welds even and exactly the same every time when the key parts are mounted and clamped tightly in the brass holding clamps/welding jig. Although my butt welder is not quite ready yet, As soon as it is ready and working , I will upload a video of it working on my KZbin channel for everyone to see !

FWIW, instead of electrical tape, try Googling "CID A-A-59163". That is the MilSpec for a self-fusing silicone tape that insulates to 400v per *mil*, and there are many tapes that more than double that rating. (It has been used since the 50's by the US military to protect the wiring of their planes, hence the nickname 'F4 tape', because of its extensive use on the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.")

Hey, very nice video! There is one thing you got wrong though: The reason why you had more power after you changed your setup was not because of the additional winding but because you remove the metal that was between the primary and secondary!! This metal doesn’t look like much but it has a very strong effect! It is used to reduce the output current of the transformer by giving the magnetic flux a side path. Here is an interesting read in that topic: info.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Workshop/advice/coils/leak/weld/index.html Long story short: if you want full power out of your transformer, make sure there is no metal between primary and secondary coil!

@ftham888
@ftham888 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, nothing was changed in the transformer core when he increased the winding by another turn, so the amount of flux remained the same. What happened when the winding was increased from 2 turns to 3 turns, the voltage at the secondary was increased by 50%, which helps to overcome the current due to resistance. Ohms law: Voltage = Current x Resistance or Current = Voltage / Resistance.

You won't as for as you need a higher voltage, you will need to make a separate welder, if you use microwave transformer, you ll need 2 of them, with more turns on the secondary to increase the voltage. Basically spot wlding: High amps, low voltage, Arc welding: Higher Voltage, lower Amps
@guillaumelombard
@guillaumelombard 6 жыл бұрын
To add to my previous reply, the cable you ll need for a spot welder will need to be much bigger in diameter since the current is much higher (probably around 400 to 500 amps depending on your transformer), however, typically arc welder have a 48V voltage output, ranging from ~60 to 250/ 300Amps output. The reason you ll need 2 transfo: it is unlikely you ll be able to re-wire the secondary with enough turns to obtain the voltage required and at the same time with a cable big enough to sustain the intensity (amps) required. So by having two transfor with the secondary wired in series, you gain basically twice as many turns or in order words, you can add up the power of the 2 transfo together.

high power ok 50mm2, but for the primary winding the original cable does not heat up, even the 20A switch does not turn off
@guillaumelombard
@guillaumelombard 6 жыл бұрын
The primary shouldn't be affected as it will always deliver pretty much the same current. I think it does matter when you have a smaller cable on the secondary ( like myself, with 25mm2), as you need to make sure that the current is not going on for too long. Though I like the way you managed to increase the power just by removing the insulation. Great job!

as it is AC, I'd guess it may work with aluminum too? PS no fan?

aluminium has more loss than copper, it is now recommended because it has higher resistance, and at high currents every small resistance will affect the performance.

How can increasing the turns of the secondary coil increase the ampere? That only reduces the ampere and increases the voltage of the secondary coil.

Note that, he reduces the cable distance, then the resitence is low. I dont belive that it is relare withnincrease the volts.

@@TheHeliosm He uses the same cable for the two trials on the secondary coil. Therefore, the resistant is unchanged. When he increases the turn of the secondary, he reduces the ampere. He needs higher ampere in the secondary coil to heat up the objects quicker. To increase the ampere he had to reduce the turn of the secondary coil. According to the physics if I make the turn of the secondary equal to the turn of the primary coil, both of the coils have the same voltage and ampere (if I did not count the loss of energy creating heat in the metals). If in the same coil I increase the turn, I increase the voltage but the ampere and vice versa. I am going to find a transformer to try and see what will happen. Thank you for your interesting.

Yes, but the conductor have less resistence it is shortes, out of coil. For other hand , you have less current but the voltage increase. Take in acount that inportan is the power. I did experience 10cm can reduce de power in the load from 600w to 300W

You actually didn't increase the power, you increased the voltage. However the amperage dropped proportionally as well. The power output, or wattage, remained the exact same either way. When you increase the windings, you increased the voltage, but lowered the amperage. You don't get something for nothing. And the output wattage has to equal the input wattage. Again, you don't get something for nothing.

Yes, the voltage stays above 1 volt, while the metal melts at the moment, so we say that the power has become larger (in plain language)

I built a spot welder that has a glorified "dimmer switch" on the primary. I linked the source in my video on my channel. Its SCR based, and there is a lot of info as well as new pre-built controllers that the guy is now selling in the link I provided.

Actually you've got it backwards... he decreased the voltage but increased the amperage. Before the secondary was switched out for larger cable, the voltage was high and the amperage low. By changing out the secondary he essentially reversed what the transformer was meant to do and raised the amperage but lowered the voltage to probably around 2v

actually your transformer puts out approximately 800 to 1000 Amps so for that current the cost will be much more than $300.
