I've had a SPOT for years. I would just mention one thing. Monthly plans - they often incur a "(re)connection" fee. Basically, 3 months ends up being about the same as a yearly plan. Just bear this on mind when you're looking at subscription costs. Good products.

Decent review. I've watched 6 different reviews now and you're the only one that adequately described what the "Check-In" feature does. Although after 6 reviews, no one has shown so much as a screenshot of the mobile app. Guess I'm still on the hub for a review that will show the mobile app

You are correct. About half of Hawaii is on the fringe of the coverage area so the signal will be weak. The SPOT X does not have any weather functions. If you are wanting weather functions I would check out the Garmin inReach Mini 2.

I’m looking at getting a couple of theses and I was wondering if it’s possible to send your location from one spot x to another. It does not need to be on a map just like lat and log. I’m a avid jeeper and end up in remote areas and it would be nice to message location Incase we get separated

I know that the Inreach has it's own separate number that you can message with your coordinates. So if you and another person had an Inreach, you cold message each other back and forth and neither person would need cell service. . I'm not 100% sure if the Spot allows you to do that as well. I'd imagine it does but I'm not totally sure. To be safe, I would reach out to Spot to get a better answer. Sorry I couldn't answer that better for you - Chase

My app on my phone connects to mine but my map on my phone doesn't pull up... can you do a video on the map features alone?

Did you get the maps to work on your phone? I have them working with no problem. I went to asset management and chose the spot and then set LIVE view as default. From the phone, I saved the link to my home screen and I always launch from the home screen (mine is actually in a folder called Spot where I have links to different parts of the mapping and software, so easy to launch when in the field, logins are all in keychain so quick to get in). In my area of BC the mapping is pretty good even has the trail names on some park areas. As you're hiking your location is marked by a pulsing blue dot. Pretty handy to know which fork in a trail to take on some hikes. I haven't tested to see if the maps are cached onto the phone . So that they are still useable when there's no cell service. I kind of doubt it. Other hikers have told my All trails has off line mapping if required.

I have a nephew with a sick sense of humor. Knowing him he'd spam the number with sms msgs just to be a jackass and cost me a few bux. Do you know if the $0.25 overage on txt msgs on the non-unlimited plans counts for INCOMING msgs or is it for outgoing only?

OK, I have the Spot X, I am out hiking, I push the Tracking button. How does someone access that info? Ho do they log on to view my tracks??

You can set a web page and you can distribute a web link to your friends. Whomever has the link can see the web page. You can put the page under password, or not. The web page shows location points where the tracking points were sent automatically, a check-in message was launched manually, or some other message was sent (the map reports all "events").

Does the new Spot X Bluetooth let you know if your message has gone through or not? I've read if the message doesn't go through on the older version, there's no way to know. Thanks

Yeah, the older model sucks, if a message fails, it doesn't re-try again, and doesn't queue it up for re-sending at all - you have to TYPE IT AGAIN! The software designers of this thing really missed the mark big time! I've been using it for 2 years, I bought it for SMS'ing while traveling, and it's a terrible experience so far. I don't know if the BT model fixed these issues or not, but my current Spot X 2 Way Communicator is terrible.

Yes the last versions shows if the message went through or not, or whether it is not possible to tell. I don't know whether you need to re-type, in case the message did not reach the satellites, but it does make an effort to tell you. Also, according to the manual, the Spot X now has sounds to warn you of incoming messages. The older versions apparently did not have that.

I’m wondering if I can send any message I’d like to another spot x while in back country? I need 2 way communication with my buddy while we are in the back country. Is this possible?

A Spot X, according to what I read around, has a normal telephone number associated to it. Anybody can send SMS to your Spot X, with his smartphone, as to a GSM telephone. That should mean, I presume, also another Spot X. There is no difference, for the GSM telephone system, between a telephone number and a Spot X telephone number. Your Spot X can receive SMS which are sent to a telephone number. But a user in this discussion said, below, that it doesn't work like that, that you don't have a normal SMS number.

The buttons on the Spot X keyboard each have a letter and a special character (number, question mark, exclamation point, etc.). So to enter a number you would press the "ALT" button followed by the number you want.

@@rmatvmc I just ordered two of the Spot X's with Bluetooth. They are on sale at Cabelas in Canada for $249.99 Canadian. That is $100.00 off each. I want one if there is no cell or an emergency. An affordable backup to my cell phone. I have thought about a satellite phone, but the monthly fees and per minute charges are to high.

Does this suck? With a coupon and rebates I could get this for free at REI or get garmin inreach 2 for a little over a hundred. I won’t lose sleep over 100 bucks. Just wondering which is optimal so I get it right the first time.

@Kelly Connor, Spot X will give you a dedicated phone number as long as you KEEP your subscription, I've had my number for over 2 years - they gave me a Texas based number (even though I don't live in Texas). But if you cancel your subscription, your new activation will change the number! So, just maintain your subscription, and your number will stay the same, and YES, people CAN initiate communication with you (if the device works properly, most of the time it doesn't), the service is not that good and many sent messages to me never made it on time - you will eventually get missed messages as emails after 24 hours of missing them … but of course they don't go to your Spot X when they fail, they go to your email (which is pointless IMO). Sending messages is equally as terrible, if the message you're sending doesn't go through, you will have to type it again! Most of the time, the indicator of "sent" or not stays as a question mark "?" so you really don't even know the status … so you're forced to type up your message again anyway! This device is really only good as an SOS tool, NOT a 2-way communicator - sadly, their software is terrible.

It should give you a number if you are paying a monthly plan. you can get a text only plan for like $10-20 a month. I would like one that works anywhere and would buy this thing if it gave you a phone number.

The Garmin Inreach has it's own number. In other words, if you two people had one, they could message back and forth without either have cell service.
